- atomicwedgie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+56My smallish 30 employee company gets over 2,000 spams a day which averages to over 60 per person. Is there any wonder why we detest you spammers so much?
My hope for each and everyone of you is the same...
1. Get caught
2. Spend 10 years being gang raped in the shower every single day while some guy named "Tank" calls you his bitch.
3. Experience total rejection upon release into society when everyone tags you for what you are.
4. Take your own life and rot in hell when it's all over.
Every time I hear of a spammer getting busted I have a Martini. :) - Mufflegrump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Quick update: They recently got a copy of Blue Frog's source code, which will provide a nice jumpstart on their plans!
- atomicwedgie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Oh and I am sure you have a better solution? Maybe ignorning the spam will make it go away?
- Anpheus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35Don't drink much, do you?
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Ahhh, the classic Microsoft POV on Open Source...
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Almost all academic cryptography is designed around the idea that the attacker can have full knowledge of the inner workings of the program, but still can't decrypt your communications. If some of the developers take the time to think through all the details, it's definitely better for the project to rely on a truly sound design, rather than simply security through obscurity.
- thundercleese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24It will be interesting to see how PharmaMaster responds to a P2P program.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -8/+32aww... I was going to say "Old news, this species is at least a million years old", but that doesn't apply ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Independent studies show that sarcasm is nearly impossible to detect over the Internet
(independent studies being me) - M2Ys4U, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21PharmaMaster DDoSed the hell out of it for the simple fact that it WAS working...
- khautz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20you grew up in a gay bar?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The Blue Security demise was the Pearl Harbor of the war on SPAM, in my humble opinion.
Maybe not a perfect analogy but it works for me. - jarcoal, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26soooo... "legitimate" zombie networks attacking illegitimate zombie networks? i guess bandwidth is a casualty of war
- carlosglz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15The simple fact that that son-of-a-bitch in Russia that runs that Pharmamaster crap site said that "if he can't send spam, there will be no Internet" makes me want this project to succeed down to my very core. I will donate whatever I can give and then some once it is complete to make sure these noble folks are rewarded for their efforts.
Who the hell does that Pharmamaster bastard think he is?
"My brothers. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me! A day may come, when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of Fellowship, but it is not this day! An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the age of the Internet comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you, stand, Men of the West!" - leboff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14it doesn't work like that
its one opt-out per email received
you send these to the originator of the e-mail so unless you have a grudge against a guy sending thousands of emails to you a day. it won't work. - Xoligy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Do you people not get sarcasm?
- bieber, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21Because of course, Free Software is _never_ more secure than its proprietary counterparts...
- tunercarzrock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Open source community, white hats, legitimate users, programmers, and good people
VS:
Spammers, black hats, porno people, Mafiosi, and bad people.
I'm rooting for the Blue Frog guys. Good luck to you! You'll probably get a lot of help. That's something people want -- freedom from spam. I used to get about 20 spams a day, then it went up to about 100, then I got a new email. Spam is horrible. It costs us money, and we don't want it. Spam must die. - mntpng, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13It's ironic that I was going to suggest to Blue Security about having decentralized system to prepare against future DDOS. Of course now they've shut down and it's up to the community to make that happen. It looks like we will eventually have a system in place that will go head to head with spammers. I believe that things will be dodgy for a while as this "war" heats up. I expect more large scale disruptions on intenet caused by spammers in response to this. Obviously spammers are now more emboldened and anti-spammers are more annoyed and pissed off than ever. I do believe that this will eventually escalate to the point where major telcos and large corporation will have to pressure law makers and law enforcement to step in and do something to stop these spammers. Sadly things will have to get lot worse before it gets better.
- ypct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11As usually - brings down the Internet. But this time he'll restore it back after he gets bored by his local pr0n:)
- stevenb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Well right now it's a very infantile project in it's development stages..
They are talking about removing control from a central location.. so their "voting" mechanism is going to have to be exacting.. otherwise they are going to flop and well.. DDoS people with opt-out requests that they shouldn't be getting cause of one node influencing the network to do so...
Also.. being open source means that the spammers could yes infiltrate the project..
But like with openssh and openssl.. I bet there are a good deal of people who would try and put backdoors in code, or other like things.. they are caught by other people who are part of the project and are good guys.
This could seriously work... with some time and effort.. and I believe the wrath of all the opensource users will come raining down on them. The war on spammers is going to become very interesting... and the spammer's botnets are getting bigger and bigger... It's going to take big time players getting involved.. to keep this afloat... question is..will anyone come to the aid of a good cause? - ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13"Shut your mouth next time you talk."
Clever boy... - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"DoS all those poor innocent people's computers being used in botnets?"
You obviously don't know enough about what is going on to make informed comments about it. BlueFrog did not DDoS anybody and didn't do a thing to the botnet machines that spammers are in control of. The BlueFrog network sent opt out requests to websites of those who use SPAM to advertise. They were controlled in a way to not prevent access to the website but they did slow them down a lot. One SPAM mail = one opt out request. It's legal according to the CAN SPAM act.
Furthermore, IT WAS WORKING! Several large spammers started using the cleaning list to remove Blue Security members from their bulk mail lists. - monolith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Dvorack? Is that you?
But really for me the spam issue is twofold... bandwidth wasted (including CPU bandwidth) and dealing with the users when they get a ton of spam/virii. - moeq, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Attention! There has been some bad frog being passed around.
Do not lick the blue frogs.
I say again, do not lick the blue frogs. - Fjord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8How are users who actively install a program to help them opt-out "zombies"? Perhaps you just don't like the idea of people not getting spam.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Pharmaster is a punk kid living in the US perhaps making 6 figures sending out garbage to the world. Does that make you madder? It should.
Look up "dollar" on the specialham forum. You have to disable javascript to get in. He is thought by Spamhaus and Blue Security to be the nimrod that spent a few grand to rent the botnet that took out Blue Security.
By the way, if you want to have some fun and kill some time try using the pharmacy expressorator. It allows you to easily submit fake orders. It hurts them big time. Online pharmacies as we all know are big into SPAM and the legality of the stores is very questionable.
http://www.mytempdir.com/653575 - waxpoet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Long live the spirit of BlueFrog...haunting spammers forever.
I LOVED the spirit of BlueFrog and was committed to helping the fight in whatever way I could. Any effort to continue this cause will be met with same commitment.
Question: Being more of a webHead than a hardwareGeek, I don't understand why the fight hasn't (also) been directed more toward preventing the spammers from hijacking computers-- and thus preventing us from blocking their counterattacks by isolating their IPs. What am I missing? (I'm sure a lot :) - stevenb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Correct, it has begun.
BlueSecurity though a failure was a success in giving the idea to a whipped community that it could fight back. And that it could fight back legally.
Like I stated... this is going to become very interesting. :) I think I myself will lend a hand in the development of the new project once it's on it's feet and started. - umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Haha, there is a really big gay bar where I grew up called the Blue Frog.
- DracoFlameus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah Acebo, sure, what u r saying is, we better don't do anything, just remain quiet and hope for the best while they gain more and more control over the internet... great... really great.
- Dimensio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Hey, spammers are sinners but they' still people"
Spammers are not "people". Spammers are non-human parasites, and they should all -- without exception -- be killed. I have, in the past, entertained fantasies of brutally killing Alan Ralsky and Scott Richter. If I were to actually make such a fantasy reality, I would feel no remorse. - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Virii is geek jargon; a play on words. Deal with it.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think Pharmamaster made a huge mistake here. By shutting down the Blue Security service, he is just asking for new, more potent systems to be built. He has great raised awareness of his own immature and illegal behavior and it's only a matter of time before this all comes back to bite him in the ass big time.
- quadvods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They should call it poison frog
- PAStheLoD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I hope this project will reach its mature stage, and it will be at least as useful as blue frog was.
- M2Ys4U, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Because this system will be P2P, it's gonna be hard to shut it down, sure there's going to be some collateral damage, there always is in war, and yes, both sides are calling this a war.
And anyways the *Frog projects don't DDoS in return, it's 1:1 spam to opt-out request - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They did. An Okopipi is a poisonous blue frog
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's my main thing. I don't care who the "casualties" are. This needs to be settled once and for all. And frankly, I don't think there is going to be as much collateral damage as everyone is saying. People always overestimate damage (to be conservative, and probably more shocking :)
The arrogance of these ***** is enough to make me want to string them up and let them burn in the hot Arizona sun. - bieber, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Note the underscores surrounding the word _never_. Lets see, a not nearly complete list of Free Software that's more secure than its proprietary counterpart.
GNU/Linux
GNU/HURD
BSD
Firefox
Thunderbird
Konqueror
Nautilus
MySQL
Apache
Need I go on? - Nasso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I would LOVE to donate some bandwidth and CPU-time on my server to fight spam. A voluntary botnet... kind of vigilante... cool :)
Sign me up! - diggsilva, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5I AM SO HAPPY!
I was really sad to see Blue Security fold under pressure, but this show so much more promise. Many are right in saying that Blue Security came up with an effective proof-of-concept, and now it is up to us to expand on it and make it really work.
Count me in--I will give what I can. - stevenb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've got a few coworkers who setup a honey pot on our network.. then pushed it out of our private network onto the internet facing side of our routers / firewalls.. and within three minutes was popped by a "zombie recruiting worm"... 3 minutes of it being live and it was owned and turned into a zombie computer.
Figure that on a VERY large scale in countries that have no real standards or protections.
*shrug* It's going to be a very messy large war. - whybird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4OFFICIAL PROJECT WIKI: http://wiki.okopipi.org/wiki/Main_Page
- fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When I get spammed, it's annoying. When I can't get to my favorite websites because spammers are acting like terrorists trying to protect their ability to annoy people, that's a ***** screaming mad outrage. If this thing gets off the ground and spammers respond with the same hostility, people will take notice.
- whybird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4... which I think is important enough to have it's own digg: http://digg.com/software/Okopipi_-_open_source_Blue_Security_equivalent_now_has_official_wiki
- myfanwy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it goes to the web page where the product is being sold. of course, nothing we can do about 419 spam, etc., but just cutting out the mail advertising Viagra will trim my spam folder to half it's size.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thats what I was thinking, however when you look at the literacy of the vast majority of PC users its no surprise that their PCs get infected by viruses and trojans and go on to become some spammers bitch!
Most people live with the mindset 'Computers are difficult to learn, so I'm not even going to bother trying'. - DickBreath, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I'm curious how abuse will be prevented?
Hey! That guy over there (who I have a personal grudge against) is a spammer! Let's all send him opt-out requests and DDOS him. - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's a figure of speech. Can't you try to realize that?
