Don't they print the answers in the back of the book anymore? You know, the homework isn't there to make your life hard, it's there to prepare you for when you'll need it. - musicaldawn, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22Is this slang for cheating?
- NJank, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12no, not really. Maybe an alternative to Mathematica. Alternative to MATLAB wound be Octave. http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/
- nowamerican, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Sweet! This is going to be good to verify my homeworks.

- PurpleSfinx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9In the textbooks my school uses, the answers are there - they're just wrong half the time.
http://www.mathsworld.com.au/ - It's THEIR fault! Idiots. - captjc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Or an alternative to Maple.
Also Scilab is another good alternative to Matlab http://www.scilab.org/ - perlmunky, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7This looks really handy. Does anyone know of a similar tutorial for the R language?
- booga1134, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I loved my 89 Maxima.

Maybe you missed the greater purpose of this application. If you think for a second that this 'big complicated calculator' is only good for doing homework, you're nuts. I use similar software for visualizing and testing certain algorithms before implementing, to make sure the values fall within certain ranges and such. That and to double check what should be occurring versus what is in the application. That's just a couple simple examples of how this tool may be a helpful aid in developing complex applications for programmer (especially for software I enjoy developing). There's a lot more use in this in other various fields, quite obviously to pure mathematicians doing research. I'm sure that Mathematica (http://www.wolfram.com) is a better choice but this is a developing project so it may compete with more hostility sooner or later.
This kind of software is not just for homework, and even if, at some level you just 'get it' and don't need to work everything out, this can help. On top of that even, most students dedicated to a major which revolves around understanding mathematics don't cheat themselves out of an education, they actually do only check their work with applications like this.
Even yet, it's not like pointing out advice convinces anyone who is going to cheat to avoid it, so you're wasting your breath. - Ryosen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Damn, I thought that said "Maxim", as in the magazine. Got all excited to see some hawt math babes...
- cvrefugee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Yeah, the Altima helps me write English essays.
- wassim2k, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I thought it had something to do with a Nissan.
- jerryparid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+389 doesn't do semi difficult integrations.
- masnevets, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Why would I use a calculator when I have a computer algebra system?
- jhub908, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Although this looks like a useful and cool program. TI-89's do all of this too, most useful thing I've ever bought to get through engineering.
- TonyChange, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That assignment works fine on my PC (both on Linux and Windows).
- freddo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2you probably forgot to type a semi-colon to indicate the end of the statement.... ;
;-) - peterandbeer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3does it have geometry becuase i really need that right now
- masnevets, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I am pretty sure this can handle a lot of integrals that the TI-89 would not be able to do. I am fairly impressed with the speed at which maxima can perform improper integrals. For example, I remember the integral of cos(x^2) from 0 to infinity from my complex analysis class, which takes probably a page to derive the answer (and this after you have built up the machinery of contour integration!), and maxima can do it in a split second. I suppose it might just be hard-coded in, but it seems unlikely.
Besides, the TI-89 is several orders of magnitude slower than your computer. - gnalle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Maxima has a really nice notation, It is easier to use than Maple and Mathematica. Of course it doesn't have everything, but it has most of the stuff that I normally need.
My only problem is that my Maxima tends to freeze when I give it a hard problem. As an example I just froze the Maxima in Ubuntu Feisty by writing
(%i1) a:x=y*z
After writing this I had to press ctrl-c to the prompt back. - respekt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2True, you can just ask for intermediary steps as well. These tools are not supposed to be used for cheating purposes. They can be used to double check results obtained manually or for scientific computing.
- sacherjj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2My 96 Maxima is going great with 258e03 miles. :)
- freddo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1from: http://maxima.sourceforge.net/
"The Maxima source code can be compiled on many systems, including Windows, Linux, and MacOS X. The source code for all systems and precompiled binaries for Windows and Linux are available at the SourceForge file manager."
You migth also want to have a look at: http://www.math.harvard.edu/computing/macsoftware/index.html - freddo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Specifically for Maxima, look at the ports'page of their wiki: http://maxima.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Maxima%20ports

- LimEeHai, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1This is a great discovery for maths personnel. Nowadays, learners need effective tools for fast comprehension.
- Cerebral, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4I thought they only printed the Odds in the book... that's why professors only handed out odds for homework so they didn't have to help do any checking or give any answers.

- sherifffruitfly, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1If I don't want my students to use computer tools, it's trivial to give problems that make such tools not helpful.
- thuang513, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1yea too late, but will be great for future use...
for people that think this is a cheating tool:
not when ur calc teacher tells you to show every step of the way. and it is good for verifying your answers (some text books don't print the answers for the even numbered problems). - wonginator1221, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2use fink to get a mac version
- tanto, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11. When doing your math homework, be neat. It does make a difference.
2. It is important to read over the material in your math text book. Don't just focus on your homework problems.
3. Don't take the attitude that you aren't good in math. Have a positive attitude. Think, "I can do my math and I can get a good grade in math."

Given f(x)
find f'(x)
find x when f'(x) = 0, call this x0
find f''(x)
sub in x0 into f''(x)
if f''(x0) > 0 its minimum
if f''(x0) 0 & f'(x0 + d) > 0 then its an inflexion point - Psht, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0Yet another reason why we are becoming dumber....
- captjc, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3@etnu
If they printed the answers in the back of the book what would the teacher assign to grade the students on. They can't make up their own problems, that is too hard. Besides, the Textbook companies wouldn't be able to sell $99 "Student Guide" that contains half of the answers with only a few worked out and a $200 Solutions Manual. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -12/+2so, basically this is a big complicated calculator? With all the setouts and things that you have to learn to get an answer, you may as well learn how to get the answer by normal working out, so you can actually pass the real EXAMS.
