- Lancer383, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Really wishing I was at home so that I could try some of these out.
In addition, I would have to recommend either VLC360 or Transcode360 -- both will allow you to watch non-Mpeg videos through Media Center Extender, and have allowed me to watch many hours or por-, er, Bittorrented TV shows in the comfort of my living room. - tokyomonster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Xbox media center ftw.
- smashcasi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They missed one of the most useful: DVRMSToolbox, otherwise known as automatic commercial skip:
http://babgvant.com/Wiki/view.aspx/DVRMSToolbox
It can take a little work to set up but once it's running it'll skip past 80-90% of commercials automatically, just like the first-gen ReplayTVs. - mrTribal, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12lol, windows.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have Media Center. But I choose to run BeyondTV for two reasons. Smartskip, and the ability to record TV starting from where you paused it. In Windows Media Center, if you pause it for like 5 or 10 minutes then come back and hit record it only records the stuff that comes after you hit play.
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So now that they did the new dashboard update, you dont need to have Media Center? just mce and vlc360?? I really want to leave work and go try this now too!!!

- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Will these work for media center on Vista?
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They should work, at least plugins aren't intentionally broken in Vista's media center.
- TWhid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Avili
I'm one of TVTonic's developers.
There is NO pay version. It's completely free, forever. We do run ads to support the service.
TVTonic is a plug-in for IE and MCE that makes watching video podcasts as easy as watching TV. To this end, TVTonic's components run in the background to intelligently check for new video, download and manage its cache. The TVTonic task tray icon allows you disable downloads at anytime. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4How many things have these plugins killed? Have there been any confirmed murders or even attempted murders from these plugins? If not how can they be "killer" plugins? Use of the word "Killer" in digg titles lately is a bit much, get with the times people. 1980's called they want their obsolete adjectives back.
- grot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Avili,
Nice try, whomever you are. TVT doesn't even HAVE a pay version, and doesn't install that stuff. I've used it forever. Work for the competition do you? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@grot
Sorry to disappoint, but you can rest your paranoia - I have no affiliation with any competitor, and frankly I really don't care.
@TWhid
I tried the program, I distinctly remember seeing somewhere that there was an expiry on the license. Anyways, my problem with the program is that once you install it - it becomes very aggressive. I tried exiting the program so that it wouldn't start every time I start my computer, but in order to do this I had to go into the registry and disabled wxmediaplayer, but when I did this it would still load up on the next restart. I was confused until I found out that it also launches a program called rxrss.exe (which probably gets an rss feed of content and downloads it), but what I didn't like was that rxrss loads up wxmediaplayer.exe and if I end the task of wxmediaplayer, and then rxrss - it would launch another program that would then relaunch rxrss (and wxmediaplayer).
Basically like this:
On Startup-rxrss loads, it then loads wxmedia. End task rxrss and on termination, the program will launch another program (can't remember the name) that will again launch rxrss and wxmedia.
I tried renaming the directory installation of tvtonic, and that worked for the time. But upon the next time I started my computer, this process started again. Why? Well it's because it couldn't find my tvtonic installation (i renamed it to x:program fileswave express/tvtonic1) and it had re-downloaded waveexpress files and created the necessary folders to run tvtonic. I don't care what you call this (whether it's self-correction or not), that's a very malware type action to take!
I've thus uninstalled TVTonic and experienced a considerable improvement in system startup and overall performance. TV Tonic had a really nice interface (the web/ajax stuff was just plain awesome), but as I said earlier - the aggressiveness of your program is very annoying and distressing to someone such as myself, who is quite experienced with programming, networking and computers - and does not need some foolproof or failsafe function to stop the user from messing with tvtonic. For that reason I'm passing on this program, and I recommend you update your software to not be so damn ignorant of the fact that someone may not want tvtonic to start up by default! - setfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And we can't forget Tom Speirs' GameEx for playing all of you MAME games and more!
http://tomspeirs.com/gameex/ - VinceNoir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@portura
I'm not into games. Too bad if you are... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Nice, maybe something like that can be rigged up for this:
http://digg.com/tech_deals/FreeTube_Watch_TV_shows_and_Live_TV_for_FREE
btw stay away from TVTonic - it's free for about 20 days, and then it locks itself and requires you to pay. But it slows your computer down on loadup, it starts a program called rssplayer.exe and several other files like rxmediaplayer.exe on startup and even disabling all these items from the startup and registry and win.ini file fails to keep it from loading the tvtonic executable on startup (which re-downloads these files). Overall TV Tonic is just not worth it, try the others on the list though! - poturta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm pretty sure that you can't play any new games at all. My flatmate use Linux for everything but needs to reboot into windows to be able to play games. He has tryed to play stuff in Linux ether it just doesn't work or it run very slow the only game I have seen him play in linux is Diablo 2
- grinin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'll digg the MAME plugin but thats it! :D
- numarc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2What does ftw mean?
- izaic3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"What does ftw mean?"
Not Windows. - jsc315, on 10/29/2007, -13/+11Thanks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3thank god XBMC isn't made by microsoft...
- BossX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1The word Killer should not be used to describe any software.. "Killer" plug-in.. "Killer" app.. please.. Useful maybe.. no way Killer.
- VinceNoir, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Microsoft is not a company that is out there to make great software that works and works well. They are a company that makes software to attract users that they can then sell to the investors in the form of profits. The users are the product and the investors are the customers. It stands to reason that the software would suck since it's essentially pointless. Whereas the FOSS community (specifically the GNU project) has the main intent of making software that is freely available for any purpose. If one of those purposes is to build an OS distribution that has really great software they just works and works well, then so be it... Debian, *Ubuntu, Gentoo, you name it... it's out there and freely available. I barely touch Windows boxes now, but I dare someone to suggest that there's anything I can't do that I would want to on a computer. (ie. Viruses, and Quicken don't count)
- grinin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Seriously... I tried Windows Media Center edition, and it looked like all Microsoft did was take a functional Windows XP, change the graphics (because we all know thats what makes their OS versions different from the previous one) and make everything buggy.
My cousin bought a Dell with Windows Media Center, because the specific model he wanted only came as a media center. 6 months later, the system took a dump. He booted into safe mode, and it wouldn't let him restore to a previous restore point; wouldn't let him use the regular "Backup" software in "System tools" and basically his whole system was screwed in one reboot.
Luckily for him, Microsoft hand's out Windows XP Pro CD keys like they're candy and I brought over my Windows XP Pro SP 2 and got him back online after a quick format. Even the NEro backup (which was the only one that worked enough to let him back up any data) wouldn't fully restore once in Windows XP Pro.
Its a shame... you would think a company with billions of dollars could produce something that is secure, stable, and functional! But for that you have to go with open source projects which don't have a penny... strange how that works. - whatsthatsmell, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4I dugg you up cuz your comment was funny. I also dugg the story cuz i use Media center.
- VinceNoir, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1OK. It ISN'T just me. This has got to be the lamest of the lame Digg stories I've seen here on Digg. Hey guys, just rename the site Sukk.com. Adios.
- himawari, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2and the ability to use the proper word. "hear" and "here"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5For the first 5 seconds I was trying to link widowed suicide bombers killing someone in the media to the word "plug-in".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4Then use MythTV. I hate fanboys.
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -21/+6Ugh, Windows media center could really benefit from "unplugging" all the ***** DRM. As far as I'm concerned WMC is malware.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -28/+3Nothing hear I really can't do with MythTV
