- celkin, on 12/21/2008, -1/+281Reason #1 not to install Google Desktop: your system resources
- dreimanis, on 12/21/2008, -2/+83One reason not to: No x64 support.
- Prophetfxb, on 12/21/2008, -3/+72Google desktop has a long way to go before Ill put it on my PC.
- Hellman109, on 12/22/2008, -8/+71Windows Search 4 on Vista is FAR better in terms of resources then Google Desktop.
It runs in the background as low priority on the HDD, therfore not slowing your PC to a crawl.
It can also tap into your servers engine and use its cache to search the server too. - laughtears, on 12/21/2008, -2/+58yeah but how much does it slow things down on your box like it does on my Mac when running in the background?!? Any suggestions on how to mitigate?
- kingjoey52a, on 12/22/2008, -6/+55So that Google will know everything about you.
- ronaldst, on 12/22/2008, -3/+48Isn't that the first software we uninstall on Dells?
- jumanous, on 12/22/2008, -3/+48Computer says no.
- AlanFang, on 12/22/2008, -3/+446. If you hate your computer
- dusanmal, on 12/22/2008, -6/+43Reason #1 is not to allow Google to spy on you 24/7. Do you think they are providing this from the goodness of their harts? What is in it for Google? - Your info and behavior. We spent years fighting spyware and removing much less harmful stuff from computers. Now, it is Google so it must be OK... Only brainless idiots could even think of installing this, nevermind the resources consumed.
- AirRaven, on 12/22/2008, -3/+37Shoots your HD performance to hell.
Not suitable for laptops by any measure. - wesw02, on 12/22/2008, -1/+35Reason #3: I use gmail, I use chrome, I have a G1, I think google already knows more about me than I do.
- JasonCox, on 12/22/2008, -2/+335 reasons to install Google Desktop... and 9995 reasons not to.
- natenovs, on 12/22/2008, -6/+33...another google ad on digg....
- konataXchan, on 12/22/2008, -3/+30Install Google Desktop and Google Search History.
That way you now know your safe being watched by Google as you spank it to that oh so wrong shemale porn you've been saving. - ZephyrNinety, on 12/22/2008, -4/+29***** Google Desktop, I have Spotlight
- darknecross, on 12/22/2008, -3/+25Reason #2 not to install Google Desktop: Widgets/Gadgets are unsightly on minimalistic setups.
- Daniel591992, on 12/22/2008, -2/+19No, that would be AOL.
- blankoboy, on 12/22/2008, -3/+19One reason not to install Google desktop.
1. You value your privacy and computer security. - c8h8r8i8s8, on 12/22/2008, -4/+20How about these 5?
1) Computer going too fast? This will be sure to slow it down!
2) Get rid of that pesky privacy.
3) More Google ads!!!
4) There are better programs for all of this stuff, but they don't look as pretty.
5) Google can target their ads towards you better. - timusca, on 12/22/2008, -2/+16Why would they even bother making Desktop for Mac when Spotlight is integrated already? Makes no sense.
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -1/+15it's not wrong!
- mrBitch, on 12/22/2008, -0/+14Agreed. Back in the days of XP, the only way to be able to search your HD quickly was via Google Desktop Search. Once Microsoft added their version of spotlight into Vista, Google Desktop is not as important as it once was.
Spotlight rocks. - fejorca, on 12/22/2008, -1/+14yep, it doesn't work.
- iofthestorm, on 12/22/2008, -4/+16What are you talking about? Vista x64 runs 32 bit software fine.
- thetrza, on 12/22/2008, -5/+17Don't install Google Desktop.
- gungaroo22, on 12/22/2008, -0/+11Opera... is... not... a desktop sidebar / widget program?
And this has nothing to do with sites?
Way to read the article, man. Two thumbs up. - inactive, on 12/22/2008, -2/+13can i have 1 reason why this advertisement article got diggs?
- Rivetgeek, on 12/22/2008, -0/+10"not supported", and "wont work" are very different things.
- LittleDas, on 12/22/2008, -2/+11it was nice when I used xp
it's really superfluous on vista though, you can do pretty much everything google desktop does already without having to install another piece of software to run in the background - diggduggjoe, on 12/22/2008, -1/+10Privacy is the biggest reason I will never use it.
The conflicts I have seen with it are another. IE is delicate enough without another add-on to worry about concerning possible bugs.
I try my best to get my clients to live without toolbars, but if they must, choose only one. I have seen IE toolbars more complex than the control panels of a nuclear power plant. MyWebSearch, Coupon bars, Yahoo!, Google, and more. - inactive, on 12/22/2008, -0/+8I remove it on all of our new images for Dells with the "I'm concerned about privacy" radio button selected.
- mrBitch, on 12/22/2008, -1/+9You did know that OSX has spotlight built in don't you?
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -0/+8I just reformat dells. I havent turned on a default dell config in a LONG time.
- Rivetgeek, on 12/22/2008, -0/+7http://worcester.typepad.com/pc4media/images/toolb ...
- tapo, on 12/22/2008, -0/+7I just noticed that.
*sobs* - inactive, on 12/22/2008, -3/+10kill self immediately
- Nintendesert, on 12/22/2008, -0/+7I prefer just using search 4.0.
- unluckier, on 12/22/2008, -0/+6OK, I just noticed that Google says there is no x64 support:
http://desktop.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl ...
However, here's a post from over 3 years ago, saying that GDS has 64-bit support:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/ ...
I installed it about a year ago on Windows Server 2003 x64 without any trouble or using any "/force" flags, and it works great. Either they've removed x64 support at some point, or it installed fine because Server 2003 is neither "XP" nor "Vista." Either way seems pretty ridiculous to me. - JerodSlay, on 12/22/2008, -1/+7eh... not really.
- sinfony, on 12/22/2008, -2/+8Much as I love to give up system performance for no interesting features, I think I'll keep running without GD.
- Prophetfxb, on 12/22/2008, -0/+6Agreed the search is cool, but I can live without it.
- Elranzer, on 12/22/2008, -0/+6Windows Desktop Search was released before OSX had Spotlight. It just wasn't bundled by default (and rightfully so).
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -0/+6Wow...just wow..
You are pathetic. Do you even own a computer?
That is your proof?
So, is any non-OS software running on my PC bad, or just software that searches?
And, are you implying that Google is now an agent of the gubmint? Of the law extends to google?
Wow... - championchap, on 12/22/2008, -0/+5Oh *****, you guys made it on to digg?
I thought we were better than that. - everlast88, on 12/22/2008, -0/+5i like it but my pc sucks and it slows it down too much, how ***** is my pc, most ***** laptops are better than it, it was a harcore rig back in the day... when half life 2 just came out
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -1/+6Where is your proof ANYTHING personal gets sent anywhere out of your control?
- Elvaanish, on 12/22/2008, -0/+5Opera actually does have widgets but... yeah. Generally a confusing post.
- kushin, on 12/22/2008, -0/+5I find it easier to find things by arranging my icons like this.
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/2717/wsdmw8.jpg - shakyguy, on 12/22/2008, -1/+5I don't use it at home, but I love it at work. It works so well paired with Outlook / Exchange.
