- viper2843, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Microsoft can't win with you guys. If they do update the OS and make it look pretty, you say they are stealing from Apple. If they don't update the OS and make it look pretty, you say that they are behind and Apple is way ahead of them. If Microsoft does implement fast searching, you call them copiers of Spotlight. If they don't, you complain that it doesn't have it. What do you expect them to do? Both companies are guilty of stealing. Do you think Apple just invented modern day widgets? They didn't. They got the idea from Konfabulator. Now I am not a Microsoft fan boy nor am I a Mac fan boy. I have all the major OS's (Windows, Mac, Linux) and I have used them extensively. I am just looking at the larger picture. Next time you go to make a comment about vista, mac OS, or anything else for that matter, please try to take a look at the broader picture and maybe, just maybe, things might make a bit more sense. You may now commence calling me an idiot ;-)
- Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Stay awy from vista for as long as possible.
as far as I'm concerned, vista = xp plus DRM plus eye candy to make the DRM tasty
kind of like candy with razor blades inside. - linuxpunk81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Remember when you could exit to DOS so you could play DOOM? Ahh those were the days...
- nerfarrow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I love the SS that shows the things that are making windows start slower...
Host Process for Windows Services (svchost.exe)
Windows Explorer (explorer.exe)
Microsoft Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe)
haha - kellanders, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3anyone else notice the "explorer stopped working" pic?
- ArcaneDevice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Windows Explorer has stopped working"

best new screenshot so far!

*excluding documents, music, movies, pictures, programs and other files chosen arbitrarily by the Digital Restriction Management Police - Dennis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Okay, so it has some features that OS X has, who the hell cares. It's Windows, and it's going to be able to run windows apps, not to mention games. So, not only will you get the OS X type of features, but you will get to continue to run all of your Windows apps, something OS X cannot do. I am upgrading, and those of you who are sticking with XP, good luck. You will have to upgrade eventually, or switch to something else.
- sewerhobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll agree that it is a better look, but I've always used the Windows Classic look so what's the point especially if you don't have the hardware to fully optimize the experience?
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Microsoft announced that they were going to put many of the features that they 'ripped off from OSX' before they were in OSX. Microsoft has just taken _forever_ to get where they are with Vista.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who needs a slide show in their "sidebar" ? Is this a feature anyone is ever going to use? I really don't see any use for a slideshow the size of a postage stamp running on my screen at all times.
- rekka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The window borders, the icons, the bursts of color everywhere... MY EYES!
OSX and the new Gnome, KDE stuff (even the old Gnome actually) look a lot cleaner and prettier than this. More fluff, more bloat, more ugh! - replica, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ All the Mac Fanboys
Can one of you explain what is so much better about Mac?
I have not had a virus/malware in 10 years of using Windows. My Windows XP never crashes. I set my system to auto-update on day one and have not worried about it once.
What is the advantage of Mac? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Rumor has it that Digg is working on an O/S
You heard it from me first. - djork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like how OS X just lets me do my thing and leaves me with the mental energy to sit down and read a book at the end of the day, instead of making me expend it all on sorting through massive verbose dialog boxes.
Why does everything need so much EXPLAINING in Vista? - Adamesq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3HEY! Microsoft has some nerve stealing the look of their new OS from AmigaOS!!!!
- Ollekebab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't care if this is a OSX ripoff or not. Why?
1. OSX is a great OS and I'd like windows to be that too (thought that is probably never going to happen).
2. I'd be using OSX if it wasn't for the fact that you cant play games on it. Or you can play games but there's only like 10 games and most of them are oooold.
So I'll upgrade the day they release Vista cuz it can't be worse than XP. - dvdgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is looking a lot better than some of the earlier screenshots. i don't really get the OSX comparisons, doesn't really look like anything on OSX to me. some of the effects could be a bit more subtle, but this is definitely less heavy-handed than some of the earlier UI builds.
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks great.
- ibgarrett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It actually looks pretty nice in spots, but warmed over in others. The graphics are fresh - for windows. But I've been using a Mac for so long this just looks normal to me.
- DanITman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How long before we see a torrent on this? If anyone finds one post it up.
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i thought it was interesting that a 40 gb hdd gets a 5.4 rating by windows, and 2gb of ram get a 2.4. seems a little off, oh wait, you mean this isn't out yet?
- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They look sweet. I cant wait to get my hands on this.
I dont think it looks like OSX at all unless you put them in the same sexy category.
It looks like Vista is shaping up to be much more than I originally thought. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find it interesting that they seem to include something to replace a lot fo the windows mods people tend to use.
- chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4C'mon guys, I'm mac fanboy 100% but I think this looks pretty decent!
- n1ko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Rumor has it that Digg is working on an O/S"
So thats what they are using all the VC money for, and I thought it was for Hummers and Hookers. - anthony1124, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3it looks pretty. looks like they took OS X and made it a tad bit prettier... aside from the big ugly X on the top right.
- jimio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The fact that MS has ripped OSX when they built Vista is no bad thing. After all OSX is a damn fine OS, and I am a Gates fan boy!
And everyone who is claiming how bad XP is...Do you remember 3.1? No too Young? How about 95? 98? 98SE? NT? ME? Every previous win OS WAS terrible, almost unusable in some situations, and they deserve their reputation. But XP is not *****, XP is the most stable, usable and powerful Windows to date...Yes it's old, and its time is nigh, but credit where credit is due guys. - TheJenks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So that horrid minty blue/green colour is still there, and that terrible start button, Im not going near that monstrosity. I will wait to change XP to the next version following Vista.
- alexpigment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think this looks like pure crap. i don't really care whether it looks like osx or not, but if they did, they didn't copy the right things. clear windows don't really add anything. the MAIN problem is the bad color scheme. anyone else a graphic artist here? this colors are horrid, and the black/blue/assgreen is a fad scheme. it will look dated in less than 2 years. i will only upgrade if i can apply the royale (windows media center) skin to vista. yes, color schemes are more important than security for me. i can't look at dog ***** all day without getting depressed.
- adidax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I don't get it mac fanboys...does it look like ass? or does it look like OS X? or both maybe?
if the last is true, does that mean OS X looks like ass? well. finally we all agree on something. - rtilford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When i get my copy it will go straight back to windows classic.
- sigginike90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2dear god that's ugly, i actually thought this might be kinda cool but i was wrong dead wrong
- GuineaPig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple takes a decade to catch up with Be and Amiga, and they're heralded as innovators. Microsoft takes fifteen years, and they have the most market share. God the computer industry is dysfunctional.
- cheese06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3can't believe people think Apple made up Gadgets. are you kidding me? widgets were created by a 3rd party source, dumbasses. Until Yahoo purchased them. So in essence, Yahoo should own all those widgets/gadgets.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ replica
Thanks man! I have to admit, I like the scroller/dock that they put in OSX instead of the windows taskbar, but that's where my love for OSX ends. I'm not a fan of the icon set, windowing interface, etc.... but I do like that it's built on a BSD-esque kernel and as such has BSD-esque shell scripting capabilities. But I still much prefer Cygwin. Plus there are a TON of nice things you can do with XP like creating new desktop environments (via Stardock suite) replacing the explorer shell (Magellan), joining a very complex domain infrastructure (via Active Directory), gaming, etc....
Once OSX has caught up to XP as far as tweak-ability and network operating environments is concerned, I might switch. Until then, XP is light-years ahead in terms of managability in a corporate, networked environment and flexibility. OSX is nice for home use, but that's about all.
God, I just re-read that post. Sorry if I sound like an MS fanboy. I actually much prefer Debian/Gnome... but in the current job I'm in, it makes no sense to use it. - Skates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can't wait for the final to be released!!!
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'll add to the growing list that imply it's rather inspired by OSX. I know the anti-Apple contingent will be irritated by the constant comparison but it's just something you'll have to learn to live with. At least you get to see a glimpse of your future with each OSX release.
Anyway, that aside, I have played around with Vista a bit and I am stunned how long it took a company with such resources to come out with this. It looks like they are going to eventually grind to a halt sometime in the near future. - safari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't wait for Vista... though, because of all of these releases being part of Windows Vista 'Ultimate,' which will probably cost a fortune, half these features that look cool probably won't be used by many users.
- rtilford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i will be changing it straight back to windows classic!
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You have thrown the keyboard in disgust.
Collecting more information to help identify the problem. This might
take several minutes... - sosbythefool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You diggers are slowing down my load times.
- boybunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well you can make your grandma look like Pamela Anderson with enough plastic surgery and breast enhancements... Looks like the guys turned on by their grandma after the surgery are the type that like the look of the new Microsoft OSX lookalike.
Don't do your grandma or Vista... its JUST NOT THE SAME GUYS!!!! - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't say the eye candy impresses me much. Vista will have to do more than look pretty for me. In fact I generally turn off the eye candy because it's distracting and reduces performance. That's one of the things about OSX that I dislike. I just want to do things easily without having to click all over the place or other things for the sake of art. I really like XP. It improved the Windows experience and made integrating new hardware and applications much easier and more stable. That's what I want to see from Vista, not a pretty picture.
If I wanted an elegant design and a pretty picture to make me feel at peace with myself and one with the world I'd buy a Mac. If I wanted to punish myself I'd load one of the million versions of linux and spend my time trying to get all my hardware to work. I want neither of those things. I just want an OS that works well and allows me to buy and configure the hardware that I choose. Right now XP does that for me and I hope that Vista improves upon that. - Audiofan2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Remember when you could exit to DOS so you could play DOOM? Ahh those were the days.."
yea, and you could re-boot in DOS mode without a boot disc - Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Subcide
You can turn off the transparencies. - dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@skyshock21
Hehe, I saw your desktop pic.. Glad to see you using my two widgets. :) (weather and digg) - monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mac fans make me embarassed to be a Mac fan. They are such whiners. So they stole a few things from the Apple GUI to make their OS look better. Big deal, Apple stole alot of their ideas too. Thats the industry now so why the hell can't there ever be one Vista discussion that doesnt have other Mac fans whining about stolen features.
- ShadowKlown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WOW...Talk about fan boys... jesus.
miothegreat put it pretty much in perspective... MS said these features would be in 'longhorn' before others implemented them, it's just taken them so long to release it cuz it's an all new premise. If the fanboys would actually do some research about the underlying changes... Think how long it would take any of you to even release an os as basic as 3.1... binary -
