- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+202Doesn't a cube have 6 sides?
- crestfall, on 10/12/2007, -8/+80Didn't you mean.....LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG? I uninstalled it after 3 minutes. It's not even worth the download at this point. Beryl and Compiz are not even in the same category as this.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -7/+78Yup. If you want 4 desktops on a cube, *just* run beryl on linux.... of course you want that badly enough to ditch your whole OS and all applications!
/coming from a linux user - coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+71Apparently you havn't looked at Linux lately, its way ahead of windows in this department.
Kernels? Every operating system is built upon a kernel...yes even Windows. - iceperson, on 10/12/2007, -9/+70"Not as stable as Beryl..."
There's a joke in there somewhere, I'm sure of it! - voyvf, on 10/12/2007, -6/+64Unfortunately, no matter what side of the cube you land on, you're still taken back to Microsoft Windows. :D
i'll keep my beryl goodness, thank you. - t1t0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43@deltabourne (#6347607) said: "lol yeah really advanced. welcome to 1995"
Actually, if you look at xclock, it's 1996. - crestfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40holy *****, he was serious... and he thinks linux looks like that... now? I think it's a troll post... he's having fun with us.... right?
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38@VinceNoir: I don't know what made you think I couldn't get Beryl to run on my Linux box (?). All I meant was not every Windows user would want to switch to Linux just to get 4 desktops on a cuboid (though many do!).
As a matter of fact, I have a 3-step beryl installation page up on my website, if you're interested: http://www.mercurysquad.net/install_beryl.html (I know posting a link to my own site is insta-digg-down.. but whatever). - hirak99, on 10/12/2007, -13/+48There goes my motivation to switch to Linux! Didn't somebody comment sometimes in the past that it is impossible to create the cool 3D effects of Beryl in Windows?! Well, I guess we showed
EDIT: Sorry I could not complete the statement I was going to make, my OS stopped responding to the keyboard for no apparent reason, and hung after I pressed the submit button. - crestfall, on 10/12/2007, -4/+38/sarcasm
(for deltabourne - I'm pretty sure it was a joke... it had to be.) - hikinthru, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35Microsoft has an XP PowerToy, the Virtual Desktop Manager at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
I've used it for years and manage dual displays (effectively giving me eight desktops). It works well (takes up negligible resources) and the desktops can be switched between using buttons on the Taskbar widget or with shortcut keys.
Note: once it's installed you have to right-click on the Taskbar and enable "Desktop Manager" to see the controls. - digitalgopher, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32btw, I haven't tried it yet since I'm on my work computer, but if anyone is wondering about the authenticity/integrity of the download, I'm assuming it's safe since it was recommended by the official windows magazine:
http://www.windowsvistamagazine.com/US/05582469247438396008/have-four-desktops-at-once-and-wow-your-friends-with-the-coolest-mod-around.html - burty89, on 10/12/2007, -9/+35@hirak99:
"There goes my motivation to switch to Linux!"
"my OS stopped responding to the keyboard for no apparent reason, and hung after I pressed the submit button"
I guess you found some more motivation ;) - StealthTomato, on 10/12/2007, -13/+35Pretty cool, but it lacks the polish of Compiz. The animations are too quick and somewhat jerky, and there's painfully considerable lag between the keypresses and the rotation.
- mraustin1337, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25*start stopwatch*
sudo aptitude install beryl emerald
beryl-manager
*stop stopwatch*
Either I'm in a time portal or that did not take 3 hours. - Lingur, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26If you want to download it, here's a mirror:

(Sorry for thread hijack)
EDIT: Damnit... it's gone down... anyway, if you want to see it in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYUQmAruH1g
Sorry - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23In case anyone was wondering the windows aren't live.
If you're a Vista user this ( http://www.codeplex.com/vdm ) is a better Virtual desktop manager as far as I'm concerned. - racs, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26cube = 4 sides?
- cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I just set up Ubuntu Feisty. The install took about 30 minutes, and installing Beryl took 2 minutes. And the fact that Beryl is smoother than this, has LIVE effects, and has more features than this program, Vista Aero, and OS X Aqua combined makes it totally worth the extra time.
- coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Ha I give up deltaborne, you are way too much of a die hard MS fanboi.
but just for kicks...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD7QraljRfM - mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17search for VIDEOS, you moron
- crestfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14whatever your intention, deltabourne, you just got, like... 200 people to check your profile at once.
- hirak99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18@crazybrit
Recommend trying it first. - ajgv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14reading deltas comments from other stories, i think he may be serious.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"Wow, you know things are heading in the right direction when people are trying to get windows to emulate linux/beryl features..."
Yup, in the Google Tech Talk given by Mark Shuttleworth, he said that once open source software reaches a level of parity with proprietary software and technologies, there is a sudden advance in open source software, because then the focus is on new features and improvements rather than on coming up to par with Windows (say) software. I guess Beryl is a great example of this, now that the Linux desktop has come of age. - dregan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17if it takes you 3 hours to install Beryl, you belong on the short bus. (My apologies to you if you really are on the short bus)
- cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@VinceNoir, he wasn't saying it's hard to set up Beryl on Linux. Indeed, in Ubuntu, it's extraordinarily simple. He's just saying that switching to Linux is hard, and that's definitely true. Having to learn a new OS isn't easy.
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -16/+28Comparing this to Beryl is just ridiculous. I haven't tried it, but a) I'm guessing it just takes a screenshot as opposed to being composited and b) it doesn't do 1/1000th of what Beyrl can do.
- vafada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@deltabourne
lol... i seached "Beryl" in Google and that's the first image that came out hehe.. now i don't know if you are sarcastic or not
/confused - sparr, on 10/12/2007, -15/+26Yeah, linux nerds will never have anything as cool as this. [/*****]

Let me know when Windows gets an even remotely comparable desktop interface. Beryl eats Aero (Vista) and Aqua (OS X) for breakfast. - Devious1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Ubuntu + Beryl = Red Pill
- dregan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14@Antiproton
You should take another look, Linux has pretty much universal support today. The only area that it doesn't quite measure up to windows is in the gaming department, and that's just because all the games use Microsoft's DirectX. Sure, Linux has cedega/wine but it doesn't support all games. - NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12By golly he's right!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cube - coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14You must have an ATI card, otherwise...
- abhiroop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10let me just open up a command prompt and search for the definition of sarcasm...
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Microsoft's XP multiple desktop Powertoy totally sucks, in case you were wondering. It just minimizes different windows depending on what desktop you're on, but you can still see them on the taskbar. There isn't really a good virtual desktops app for Windows right now, as they all have too many weird bugs.
- Stradenko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@mercurysquad
I'm not geometrologist, but doesn't the definition of the cube require that all 6 faces have an equivalent aspect ratio (otherwise it'd just be a cuboid)? - khag7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10cube is better than triangular pyramid because screens are square. what should he have said? cube without top and bottom faces?
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Alt-Tab works fine.
- crestfall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12define "working". Beryl WORKS. It increases productivity (really), and makes for a supersleek environment. I'm not sure what this does.
- cootetom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13@ deltabourne
I'm a windows user but I can assure you Linux has been doing this and so much more advanced graphical stuff for a long time now. Beryl with emerald effects can only be appreciated when seen and there is nothing for Windows that match's it. - dregan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Want to see linux nerds do this? They've been doing this for years, check out Beryl/Compiz. (by the way, Windows has a kernel and command line too).
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10It takes you two hands to hit alt+tab?
- bmxboy661, on 10/12/2007, -10/+19or, if you are a mac use, virtue desktops

/coming from a mac user - R3yDigg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12That is hilarious!
- mraustin1337, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@coldphoenix & stradenko:
Ummm... Say you have 1280x800. That means that the sides are 800px the top is 1280. That means that the top of the cube will be 1280x1280. It wouldn't fit on your screen. Only mathematically speaking though, I'm not sure how you are speaking.
It isn't really a cube. It's more a short cube. Saying this (or the beryl / compiz "cube") is a cube is actually incorrect. - fajita, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8So your obviously have never used linux before and quite possibly be too young to drive.
- Goner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9hell, when I searched Google images for Beryl, I got this:
http://www.alexander-gallery.co.uk/artists/works_art/233_size/Beryl%20Cook%20The%20Birthday%20Cake.jpg
I don't think it's Linux... -
