- johnsee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Math comment is just a nuisance, and is simple for bots to get around.
If you really want to stop spam, use something obscure that no one else uses. I tried every single suggested solution to stop robots signing up to a phpbb board, and none worked fully. So I simply added a field that said: "Type HUMAN in this box to confirm you are a human." Haven't had a single spam user sign up since.
If you want good spam protection, use something unique.
Also, Akismet rocks! kthxbye - jayh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Install Akismet, I just saved you three steps
- ACrazyGerman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Buried as blog spam.
- gann, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9For wordpress only.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8no mversion you're wrong.
the title should read "4 Easy Steps to Kill Wordpress Blog Spam Forever"
:D - Scuba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It looks a little fake tough - "the most massive crane made from the granite, for halve of the price of the legal medicine of prescription" is a little more hilarious than what i'm used to.
- keithdsouza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4haha he is talking about spam plugins, check out his post he already has a spam comment
- WildTang3nt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Akismet has worked just fine for me.
- DrGamez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Of course the math thing is easy to do but the point is they would have to tailor their bot to read, understand, and then correctly answer that question. And unless you have a super popular blog it's just not worth their time.
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I actually like the idea of the math comment, but think it's a bit too easy :P
With a bit of tweaking, not only would it prevent blogspam, but uneducated spam... If you made it a graphic and distorted it a bit, robots wouldn't be able to automatically parse it either... - eliburford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I did the first step, installed Akismet. Rest isn't necesary.
- mversion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i agree... inaccurate indeed.
the title should read 4 Easy Steps to Kill Word Press Spam for Ever - SimonGray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The way I did it on my blog was very simple and completely eliminated the 30 some spam messages I got per day in the comments. I simply added a confirmation page.
Submitted data ===> Confirmation ===> Data is stored in database - webhead74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Obviously effective given the viagra & nigerian 419 spams on his own page...
- spacemanspork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My method(s)?
1) It checks the comment to see if certain keywords are found in the comment. If so, the comment doesn't get accepted.
2) Registered users bypass this.
3) What keywords aren't accepted? Here's the most important part: http://, .com, .net., .org, www., .bz, .info (you get the idea). Comment spam is there for one reason. To get a link in.
4) If you have a bad keyword it'll tell you "unregistered users can not post links".
5) To register you have to answer a simple question
The key thing here is the fact that spam comments almost ALWAYS are about putting in a link. Some get thru but the ones that get thru are ones that are sent to test your spam catcher. Like the ones that get thru for me look like this
"asdfadlji fdalji gfaligjl sipzxuyiowqupoer oiauipeqr qepri"
and that's it. It's annoying to clear those out but it's nice to know spammers get nothing outta it. - dagospelman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1problem with akismet it doesn't get rid of obvious spam so if you have a big blog then it's impossible to find false positives without having to trawl through 100s of spams. Plus, it doesn't learn from the posting habits of your blog and it can't be tuned to your blogs parameters.
SK2 is much better - wampl3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Don't forget Bad Behavior... Akismet barely has any work to do now...
- Bagels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not a tech person, but to kill email spam I've seen a cool method where you show your email as a gif jpg or png, and then bots can't copy-paste it or don't recognize it as the thing they're looking for. If you get a lot of email spam, you can even try making it look more like a captcha by editing the individual letters in photoshop. However, keep in mind this obviously discourages legit emailers too.
- Cogita, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Perfect post! It makes me bored.
- quick5pnt0cobra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who are the people digging this? It's not like he gave a number of new ways of stopping spam. All he did was post the most obvious solutions to slowing it down. I have a hard time believing anyone here hasn't heard of akismet. Doesn't matter anyway because none of those will stop live humans from spamming, that's easily proven by the spam on that particular blog.
- Fracture98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why would I want to spend more time posting spam?
- Rainbow101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I need some mods for IPB to end spam forever. I get 2 users everyday who post on my forum with nothing but spam.
- geekmansworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Good thing none of us use Moveable Type... oh wait...
- resplence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Of course. No need to create another world for that.
- johlin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I thought it would kill blog spam on Digg. Too bad.
- genotrance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Interesting timing...
http://blog.genotrance.com/2007/03/10/turning-to-akismet/ - antechinus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3There is another kind of blog spam that is harder to eradicate. This Digg article is blog spam.
- echo1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2buried as inaccurate because they can't spell forever
- karamazov, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I will try this, because I receive over 50 spam emails per day
- extratired, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2wordpress only? inaccurate...
- FiP0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Yep. Something simple can easily work.
Take a look at http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000811.html#endcomments
