- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10No, 4+1 is about right. He lists 4 ways of speeding stuff up, and also recommends upgrading to Wordpress 2.1 which has slightly improved queries and such. That's not really a speedup, because 2.1 is not fully backwards compatible, so may break things if you're not ready for it.
- rehanyarkhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The title of this article actually does it injustice. These are all great techniques for speeding up any PHP site.
- dpace32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2your suggestion just saved my wp site :) wp-cache worked wonders... i almost switched my web hosting!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3PHP and MySQL caching will greatly increase the speed of all of your MySQL-enabled PHP websites as well!
Here are some pointers from experience of setting up both before:
For PHP5+ users, use eAccelerator. It is easy to set up (if you have root access, of course), and speeds up PHP. Just a note to those that haven't used this software before, make sure you don't create your cache directory in your /tmp folder like it does in some of the instructions. Store it away somewhere like /var/cache/eaccelerator/ (make sure you give it the correct write permissions too!) Make sure you set the values in php.ini for eaccelerator accordingly as well.
Most *nix OS's will clean out /tmp on each reboot, and growing up on Windows (hey, I'm only 17, I really did!) I tend to reboot my server after upgrading software or even installing software like eaccelerator.. it just makes me feel better. :P
If you don't use PHP5+, upgrade. Please. Also, upgrade to Apache2 and the latest version of MySQL.. If you use Debian and it won't let you with apt-get, put 'testing' repositories in your sources.list and apt-update. Because of the higher version numbers and the fact that bugs are always in new software, you might want to apt-get update && apt-get upgrade every couple of days. Don't run upgrade via a cron job though, sometimes it will ask you important questions where the answer will not always be the default one (causing your server to become useless.)
Before going through any of the steps in this comment or on the website, make sure you backup.. just do it, even if you don't want to. - MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All you need is the WP-Cache plugin: http://mnm.uib.es/gallir/wp-cache-2/
It's super easy to install and use. My Wordpress blog hit the main page of Slashdot about a month ago (http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/01/28/2043226) and the server didn't even blink. - manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jues
No, that's just the 404...remove the ) from the end of the URL.

No, but it appears you just made Slashdot's server crash ;) - ZPWeeks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Your link is broken... Which article of yours got slashdotted?
- nsharp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More suggestions here (an old article I wrote on the subject):
http://www.nsharp.org/09/optimizing-and-digg-proofing-your-web-site/ - nsharp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually the only useable suggestion in the original post is to install and enable wp-cache.
- apadmedia, on 11/14/2008, -0/+0There's a bit different when enabling the 'cache'. Before, my site load at 20-25sec, then after enabling the 'cache', it load at a mere 11sec. After i play a bit with the themes coding, i could get it load at 4sec! The main fact is, use less load themes, and a link to any analytics tools, will make it heavy a little bit.

- Managore, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I was going to say "They have a number for 4+1" after I read the title too
- Raider2044, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3So umm, 5 ways?
