- Ajajadude, on 02/25/2008, -3/+57If I follow these steps, is the MPAA going to kick down my door and have me sent to Guantanamo?

- Gabberwok, on 02/25/2008, -2/+19Not saying I agree with it, but yes, you're technically breaking the law if there is any encryption on the DVD. Breaking encryption on digital media violates the DMCA. It would be hard for the MPAA to know that you've done it without getting a warrant to search your computer so I'm sure they care more about the people distributing the software to let you do it than the people who are using it. That said, until the laws change it is illegal, but the threat of punishment is very unlikely.
- Balk2K, on 02/25/2008, -1/+15I prefer DVD Decrypter for ripping and burning DVD images
- Ajajadude, on 02/25/2008, -1/+13It's probably easier to have yourself a HDD full of movies you can play off of than having to change a disc every time you want a new movie...you know, never having to pull the DVD case off the shelf.
But, as far as fair use is concerned, we all know the powers-that-be would rather it be illegal for you to actually use the media you bought. - RGM89, on 02/25/2008, -3/+12Uhm, can't DVD Fab do all of that without all of the other steps.
- garfonzo, on 02/25/2008, -5/+14This is great! I've tried various methods of putting my DVD collection on my computer with many frustrations, but this will be a good solution.
This comment adds nothing to this thread... *prepares for bury* - alwaysnomadic, on 11/18/2008, -0/+8Why not just Handbrake, with the DVD43 tool? DVD43 is just 500k and it's sole purpose is to decrypt the DVD
- Balk2K, on 02/25/2008, -1/+9Oh, you don't need to follow the steps. They'll bust in if you even follow the link.
- Gabberwok, on 02/25/2008, -4/+11Is there a good Mac solution that doesn't include MacTheRipper? I know Handbrake is great, but there are many DVDs it can't handle...
- Ajajadude, on 02/25/2008, -2/+9And the tooth fairy really exists. The fact that people are breaking the encryption is more than enough for them to get all paranoid that it's going to lead to the downfall of the music industry. Couple that with the fact that you're then turning around and putting the movie into a format that's easily playable on multiple platforms and they'll assume the only reason you're doing that is because you want to distribute the movie.
These organizations are illogical and run by people who can't embrace technology and use it to their advantage. - scyon, on 02/25/2008, -0/+6***** the MPAA.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 02/25/2008, -0/+6Why download something if you already have it on DVD?
- Topher06, on 02/25/2008, -1/+6Why would you do that when the intent is to put it on an iPod or stream it to another device?
- MadEnvoy, on 02/25/2008, -0/+5With the new Mind Crimes laws, they'll bust you for even thinking about it.
- charman2k6, on 02/25/2008, -0/+5I would prefer a 1 step.
- Joners, on 02/25/2008, -0/+5Great another pointless guide using out of date information, the free version of DVDFab HD Decrypter that many of us had been using has now been removed and FreeDVD put in its place, this is smaller however requires more pissing about and doesnt let you select what elements of the movie you want.
Not only that Ive found handbrake to average for encoding. Id much rather recommend AutoGK again, its free and is reasonably simple to use. However the results are the best that you can find.
NB: There are plenty of guides around and this one aint too special, id look for others. - otis12, on 02/25/2008, -4/+8How about a one step conversion: http://handbrake.fr/
- RGM89, on 02/25/2008, -4/+8"Hey, don't censor me bro!"
- lcarsdeveloper, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3I'm still using the old DVD Decrypter v3.5.4, I know it's ancient but so far I haven't encountered a single DVD it hasn't been able to rip. I use DVD Shrink too usually, although that's not really important when you're converting to MP4.
- Ghiren, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3Both ideas have their merits. DVD Shrink is better if you want to preserve menus and extras on the disk or you just wanna use it with a standard DVD player. I'd rather use Handbrake though since my DVD player and XBox 360 are DivX compatible. I could just burn whole seasons of a TV series to one or two 4.7GB disks or just drop a bunch of movies onto a USB hard drive and plug that into my 360. I can tell you that it's a lot easier than carrying around a case full of burned disks.
- jenniecaute, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3If I could bury you twice, I would.
- ahughes, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3Step 1 - Install and run acidrip on Linux.
That is all... - Acolyte357, on 02/25/2008, -1/+4There is a ***** reply link for a reason! Use it.
- Ghiren, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3Since when has adding nothing to a thread been grounds for burial? :) The majority agrees with you, therefore your comment gets dugg.
What did you expect? Slashdot? - inactive, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2The free version of DVDFab HD Decrypter unavailable? I'm still able to download it from the free downloads section of their website ( http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm ).
- orrd, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Do it in one step instead... get FairUse Wizard at http://www.fairusewizard.com/ ... It's free, no spyware etc., easy to use...
- ChrisWalkr, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2Gitmo has Starbucks tho!
- IllBeBack, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2He was correct. esengulov should have used the Reply link instead of creating a separate message and using the archaic "@ Ajajadude".
You can be buried too. - inactive, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2What is wrong with MTR?
Mac the Ripper and Visual Hub work perfectly. - D4CH, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2In Denmark its legal, as long as you have the original, you can do whatever you want with it. - but surely not share with others.
- humperdeath, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2As long as you already own the movies, it should be fair use to copy for personal use. Changing from one format to another is no different than recoding to VHS. By the way, this process is not new. These utilities have been around for a couple of years already. (at least)
- MykeXX, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2Didn't work
- Y0tsuya, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2@drjekelmrhyde
Your missed the point. He wants VOD (video-on-demand) on his HTPC. And no, he's not going to put in a DVD carousel. - jgrahamda, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2it's called Gordian Knot...it was around like 6 years ago
then there was autogordianknot like 4 years ago
www.doom9.org - rizla420, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2I've been using the AnyDVD + DVD shrink combo on my dual boot linux box. Its worked great, but I spend most of my time in linux and hate having to reboot to copy/burn my dvd's. Yesterday i finally spent some time to do some research and found a solution that works. I'm using K3B to rip to ISO then just use the internal ISO burner to burn the new disc.
I'm starting to think of a better way of doing this though. I'd much rather transcode the dvd's to Xvid (or Divx) and save them on my PC and stream it over to another PC. The downside I see to this that the quality of the transcode might be crappy on some of the action movies and that I dont know if it retains the 5.1 surround.
So i guess I've got a question to those who are in the "know" and have already tackled these issues. First, do you use linux (i'm on Ubuntu.. go figure)? WHat solution do use to store your DVD's on your media server. How do you have it set up to your PC. Do you still have 5.1 going to your amplifier? Or better yet, is there a good guide that sums up these things? - pfranz, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2Really? I'm pretty sure the mac version will deCSS it for you. It will also increase the wear and tear on your drive (so most people don't do it)
- neodorian, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2All of this stuff is available on videohelp.com. It's never been hard to find proper conversion tools and with dual cores being standard these days it doesn't take too long.
- ICanRead, on 02/25/2008, -1/+3I must Digg Up a comment which was so excessive in intelligence.
Bravo. - ICanRead, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2You know he's enjoying the digging down.
He's trolling. Look at his handle.
Don't get suckered. - njhardc0re, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2yes we all know how to burn a dvd kid
- puppetj, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1how about a 2step in reverse, i havent found a app(s) that can do that without causing the dvd video to be out of sync with the dvd audio, eh?
- portos12, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1Nice iPod related stuff.
http://www.bestipodtips.info/ - inactive, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1I have been known to use FastDVDCopy, with the setting to keep the *_TS folders checked, I then pop over to Handbrake and point it at the folder in question and it ports it all to a nice, usable mp4 format (I find using the default AppleTV settting is just fine). Then, using Control360 (I think that's what it's called), I can watch my entire library from the comfort of my couch via my Xbox360.
FastDVDCopy works the same way as using MacTheRipper, really, but it also handles the process of copying/compressing/burning DVDs, so I don't have to use DVD2OneX + Burn. It's saved me a lot of time in terms of backing up my collection... - tbull, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Check out
http://allfreemac.com for all your Mac OSX needs
Thanks - metalica77, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1AUTO GK is another good windows windows program for converting VOB Files
- Ajajadude, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Time Warner kicks me off the internet not too long after I start downloading torrents.
- rizla420, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1Quick update, i found out that the XBOX360 can stream videos to it via Windows Media Center or Tversity (??). Is there a linux equivalent to these options? Could I run Tversity in a vmware session?
- spammishking, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1yes it is.
