http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Microsoft_Windows - antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MS didn't rip off Apple, Xerox was the one ripped off, everyone else is a copy of Xerox, so unless you're a Xerox fanboy/cheerleader/humper, STFU and enjoy your replica.

Yep, I saw "Pirates of the Silicon Valley" too. - tolbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everyone knows the people at Xerox stole their ideas from Jesus.
- paul_c, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love the shot of the Windows box - "For IBM and Compaq personal computers".
Its easy to forget that there was a time when compatibility was a real issue with computers, and Compaq was famed as being the system that was the most highly compatible with IBM PC's. Many computers that ran MS-DOS didn't run a number of programs written for IBM PC - Microsoft Flight Simulator was a classic test of compatibility. Today we just accept that any box that runs Windows will run any program written for Windows (as long as the system meets the minimum requirements). Excellent to be reminded of the bad old days! - mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That *****-esque picture of Gates is worth my +digg
- Zabbawack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The pic of B G is kinda sleazy, I dont like it!
- toasty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple fanboy here but I'm not gonna go into the whole bashing thing. My first computing experience was with Windows 95, so I have to give it to Microsoft for this one. It's what got me into the geek that I am. Heh, I remember having copies of 1.01, 2.03, and 3.0 installed along with win95. I was the coolest kid on the block. =P
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think most people (not all, but most) who work in the computer industry likely owe a good portion of their career to Microsoft's success.
...but let's face it. If it wasn't going to be MS - it was gonna be someone else. - lilfroger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Interesting... I never knew much about Windows 1.0. Isn't it kind of odd that it required 2 floppy drives? ..."
Oh for you young ones...this was in the day and age that a 4 MB Hard Drive was a BIG deal. You had to have two 5 1/2 drives: one for the disk w/ the program and one to store the data on. Some apps had two disk that had to be in at all times. I still have some of my favorite games that have two or three 5 & 1/2s. - thicke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HM....Windows and Bill Gates. Two of the most sexy things on Earth.....
- obscurelyfamous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And it was not just Xerox. Companies have been grabbing each others' ideas for decades. Without this fierce competition, we wouldn't have all the nifty things today.
Put it in perspective. - cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mac will have its day with all the spyware and virus's and hacker ***** and whatever else to. Once more people realize how good Mac OS X is and start buying it more, people will start ***** with it to. Mac users better enjoy this crap while it lasts! Sorry Leo.
- Vokas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1God bless MS and I hope they have another 20 years of dominance.
- seros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
apple steals from xerox.
windows steals from apple.
AND WE ALL STEAL FROM MRSOFT...... - vexite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+020 years of patching.
- zootread, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2My experience with Windows has only been since 3.0, but its all been crap since then.
- Koennie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why can't we agree that Apple is better even if it was stolen.
- canUdiggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the last bullet is the most interesting:
"The retail price for Windows 1.0 was $100. Adjusted for inflation, that's equivalent to $177 in today's dollars — roughly the same price you'd pay today for a full retail edition of Windows XP Home." - frozencaldera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only appropriate... Gotta love Steve. :-p
http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/sellswindows.php - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why can't we agree that it's pointless to argue about operating systems? Microsoft is one hell of a company and they make good kit. Nobody would use their OS if they didn't. The same goes for Apple, and Linux too. The argument that "people are just too lazy" or "too uninformed" to switch from one to another is ignorant, wrong, and wasted breath. If you don't know that by this point... best of luck with ya.
- gmoura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Was about the submit the same news. Digg.
- bash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually the story goes like this:
apple steals from xerox.
windows steals from apple.
so in the end, they're all theives. - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting... I never knew much about Windows 1.0. Isn't it kind of odd that it required 2 floppy drives? Also, I think it's funny that it didn't allow two windows to overlap. I downloaded it a few years back, but never got around to installing it.
- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^Interesting comment...makes you think doesn't it.^
- DoMaGe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I owe my career to Microsoft. I don't work for them, I work because of them. Happy birthday Windows!
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Microsoft bundled a calculator, clock, calendar, notepad and a handful of other small apps...with Windows 1.0."
gee wizz, haven't they come a long way since then... - Koennie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hows about "20 years of Fixing bugs, buying expensive software to get rid of viruses."
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, an article on windows and no flaming at all. I am truly proud.

Internet Exploder was Windows 95. - KillerX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+020 Years of Crap!
20 Years of Microsoft Butt Monkey Love
20 Years Mediocre Sh#t
20 Years of No Original Thinking
Any would be a better title.
No Digg. - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I for one welcome our 20 year old overlords.
- GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nothing beats the morning digg argument
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you microsoft. Happy birthday. You done well.
- Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bought windows 2.0 from a bargain bin. It sucked so badly. No wonder nobody used it. Windows wasn't useable until v 3.
- MikeZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No No, 15 bad years of windows and 5 great years and getting better mac os x, what do you pc guys think of that, no just kidding. PC's are great computers its just Windows, it just gives me a hendhech thinking about it, so think different. haha i crack myself up.
- hellsyeah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you read the article, it says the Bill Gates didn't get his inspiration/ideas/stealing/whatever you call it from apple or xerox but from some company called vision. Here's the link that they give you. http://members.fortunecity.com/pcmuseum/vision.htm
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How about a positive Windows review? Its on 94% of all computers + the pirate copies so about 95-96%. If Mac had that market share, I am sure they would be problems on their systems too.
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"actually the story goes like this:
apple steals from xerox.
windows steals from apple.
so in the end, they're all theives."
Wrong. In the lawsuit M$ proved they did not steal from Apple, but "borrowed" from Xerox. - allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I want to be the first to welcome our Google Overloards! :)
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Nice article.
- Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2F* Windows XP, since when has that been a "real" OS?? who cares if it's been 20 years, do we really have to be reminded how long this ***** has been around? and WMtrader, M$ is not the reason the computer industry is like it is today. Believe me, the world would be so much better with just Apple around.....So I say, screw you M$!!!
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0thats right baby and we ain't going anywhere so get use to it apple fanboys!
- slhilbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0A couple of years ago I worked a job. I cleaned out the software closet and threw away every version of Windows ever. My co-worker was all like... dang you aren't going to throw that away are you? We might need it. I was like, "Shut Up"! And then I threw it in the trash. ha ah ahah aha ha ahahahahhahahaha
stuart
http://www.getyourowntots.com - Tufriast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Windows is not an original invention of M$ due to the theft at Apple that occurred between Jobs and Gates. I am a Linux user, and mourn that people have imprisoned themselves for 20 years.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The windows bashing continues
I Back bill right now, it dos what i need it to do. The only thing that they should get rid of is the stupid activation thing then it would be great
GO WINDOWS
+Digg - GuitaristTom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1im sorry, but i gotta go the windows way in this conversation...i mean, windows IS the easiest operating system to run, except apple, and the big problem with apple is that, well, people make better ***** for windows
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Windows forever! So what if Mirosoft ripped Apple off. AMD ripped Intel off too, but no one ever bitches about that for some reason.
You know, if people didn't steal other peoples ideas, allot of the products we use today wouldn't exist. -
