- Shizlak, on 10/12/2007, -10/+68This is Not nicely written.. I'll post what i posted on one of the original postings:
This article raises alot of very stupid and uninformed points. Many of the points are about the same thing (12,13,14,15 are all about the new network ui, which does suck, but that is 1 point.. 18,17, and 16 are all user account protection, easily disabled.)
Complaining about installation (4) is the stupidest vista comment i have ever heard... xp halts the installation process about 5 times to ask you some questions. Vista asks questions before and after installation. Installation is the best part of vista (which says something, i know).
He also complains about bugs and performance (20, 9, which are true). If this was called "20 Things You Won't Like About Windows Vista BETA 2" he would have a point..
Vista beta 2 is a slow resource hog. The new network ui is awful. The new start menu is stupid. But this article is just biased, inflated, and uninformed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+613 things digg users won't like about vista:
1) vista will be on more desktops than linux before brunch the day it launches
2) vista will be on more desktops than osx before lunch the day it launches
3) nothing linux/mac fans say, do, believe or publish will dampen vista's success in any way - goat77, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Here's something I don't like about vista: It has an odd tendency to cause people to rally against it for no apparent reason.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29Hell, more people will pirate vista the day it launches then there are linux/mac users combined. That really says it all.
I can see it now -
Windows_Vista_(whatever version).torrent | 230823489 seeds | 239823794 leechers - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Not just the headline... exactly the same article.
- jgclark123, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25Yeah, you're probably right. Why would Microsoft keep churning out $300 OS's that are only incrementally better than their predecessors? That would only lead to continued profits.
I like open source software, too; I'm installing Kubuntu 6.06 tonight. It's too bad that I'm keeping Windows XP, and so is 90-something percent of the market share. Windows won't be going anywhere for a long time. There is definitely a chance that Apple could steal some market share, but Windows won't drop under 50% (or even 80%) anytime this decade. - sjstclair, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23I swear this is like the 3rd time ive seen this headline up on digg.
- Wabem, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22I think what the person who writes this article fails to realize is that it is, in fact, STILL IN BETA. This is not the finished product... many things can change. A beta is made to iron out the wrinkles. Sure it isn't the best experience in the world, but what beta is?
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17@mordain
yeah, but not on the level of an entire OS. sure they can make gmail talk beta...but when they make an OS let me know. until then, i'll be using xp, and when vista comes out, i'll use that - jamesmorad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16i think you're right...
- YumZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Why do they insist on spanning every article across 10+ pages? I dont want to load 13 pages to read this article.
- jasonsfakename, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14http://digg.com/technology/20_Things_You_Won_t_Like_About_Windows_Vista_5
Yeah it has already been submitted a few times. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"Minimum video system requirements are more like maximum."
ummm no, I found a card that meets the requirements for $60 at best buy.
"Aero stratification will cause businesses woe"
no it wont, YOU CAN TURN IT OFF!
"Windows Defender Beta 2 is buggy"
Nice work detective! ITS BETA!
"Lack of Windows Sidebar Gadgets."
Well seeing as how Beta 2 is not public yet its going to be that way. When it goes public and people start making gadgets that 21 number will rise
" Price."
NO ONE KNOWS THE PRICE SO HOW IN THE HELL CAN YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PRICE??
"Scot Finnie is Computerworld's online editorial director."
Well fire him because he is a idiot.
But hey I'm a beta tester, what do I know? - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I swear this was up this morning, but it didn't have the ads.
Someone needs to write "20 things you'll like about Vista". Just to balance perspectives out. The reviewer sounds a bit like someone who really has something against a system, but pretends to be neutral for the sake of the article and a large amount of the cons are due to the beta stage apparently. - lambda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1120 things you won't like about this article: it's divided into 20 freaking pages.
- sjstclair, on 10/12/2007, -8/+173 Great points r2d7
- Patioswings, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I see negative vista submissions pretty daily here on digg!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Yeah yeah we know, 98% of the world is stupid, the rest use linux bla bla bla.
- SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Holy crap this article is informative, I had absolutely no idea beta software could be buggy and have problems!
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Submitted 4 days ago?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Deja Vu?
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12now i have some tech site telling me what my opinion will be for software that isn't even released yet ? gosh, the interweb is amazing.
20 - those requirements are more or less standard now, or will by the end of the year.
19 - why would it be a problen ? you either turn it on, or you turn it off and in corporate situations you normally have hundreds [or thousands] of pcs that are all the same, so you only need to make a single decision.
18 - you guys claim that the equivalent of uac in mac os x and linux is some type of miracle that is keeping your pc safe, yet when ms implement something similar you say it's horrible ? sure, it can be annoying (trust me, nowhere near as annoying as the early betas) and it's not finished.
17 - see 18.
16 - see 17 and you can easily access the administrator account, as long as you're computer literate.
15/14/13/12 - all the same and are rather baseless and ms have openly said the nm still needs work.
11 - oh no, you have to make an extra single click to get to your display properties, boohoo.
10 - try right clicking on the ui and turning it on or hitting alt, it's still there.. these guys are computer illiterate.
9 - god forbid a beta program be buggy, what's the world coming too ?
8 - i'm sorry, you're expecting support for a beta ? lol ! also, 90% of those were driver related and hardware companies haven't released drivers for vista.
7 - once again, it's in progress, right now they're just showing off how it works, they aren't really caring for having the coolest things around and this will be different in the final release.
6 - once again, bugs in a beta ? i think the sky is falling !
5 - oh no, i need to click a little arrow, boohoo.
4 - shorter then xp and many linux distros and instead of multiple questions, there's basically 2.. installing has drastically improved.
3 - is it seriously that hard to choose a package ? if you take the time to read the difference, you'll see that there is a reason.
2- it's new, of course there will be a decent price, as with everything new.
1 - yeh, apple was the first to have instant search, desktop gadgets and so on ? nope, they weren't.
they copied mozilla ? they weren't the first to have tabbed browsing.
these reviewers are so stupid and a little less bias would be nice.
as shizlak said: If this was called "20 Things You Won't Like About Windows Vista BETA 2" he would have a point.. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+18This was already on the front page ***** 12 hours ago, and got taken off, quit submitting this biased ***** FUD article. christ.
AND I JUST CAUGHT THIS:
the submission is ::4:: DAYS OLD what the ***** digg?!!! - Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8when i stop seeing 2 apple articles and 1-2 anti-microsoft articles on the front page at the same time, i'll change my thinking about digg users.
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9i swear, digg has become so apple i can barely stand it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8lol @ some kid's "facts". Show me someone MS is paying to post on sites like this.
The ads you mention are probably "contextual". For some reason a lot of linux sites talk about Windows, why the ***** would you be surprised to see MS ads on a site that craps on about Windows and windows-related keywords? - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@pabster
I shudder to think what *****-ass browser you're using on your l33t linux box. - serpico, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I believe there will always be something we don't like about our OSes, but Vista appears to be a great upgrade still for Windows users. I've read about many issues with the Beta, which is expected for a beta. I've tried SUSE and really liked it, though I'm curious about Ubuntu and Kubuntu. One day I would like to try them, as soon as I have time!
- Sk8SkaNJ, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The author uses a graph based on his opinion to support his article.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Minimum video system requirements are more like maximum."
ummm no, I found a card that meets the requirements for $60 at best buy. - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Well at least he labels it 'subjective' rather than 'objective'.
He's obviously an Apple fanboy. - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Dupe, again...
*sigh* - Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9#1 thing digg users won't like about windows vista: its not made by apple
- Avanost, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8My favourite part about about "vista" is that everyone seems to know everything about it, and what problems its going to have WHEN THEY'RE DONE MAKING IT NEXT YEAR. Personally once I tweaked the major problems out of this beta release I like it more then xp (not hard to like something more then xp I know) .. but at the same time im not growing too comfortable with either its pros or cons because its in the middle of development.
- loudestnoise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7ha, this is true for me, but I dont think you can make such a generalization for all digg users.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is why the MacOS interfaces are broadly liked (although not universally :P). Because you can tell someone thought about the user experience and nearly every facet of the user interface.
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I'm not a technonerd who is prone to experiment with new, beta OS's but...
I like Vista. It is what I hoped -> an updated, better-looking, more intelligently-laid-out successor to an already pretty damned good OS, Windows XP. I find myself doing a lot less navigating through menus.
One last interesting point: Firefox runs even better than IE 7.0 does on it! - Logan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@shrimpdesign: Apple didn't redo Mac OS X from the ground up, it was based on NeXTSTEP, which was based on BSD.
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Logan,
While OS X is essentially the next iteration of the NeXTSTEP OS, the majority of the operating system was re-written, or newer codebases imported. The Mach subsystem was updated. The entire userbase was updated. An entirely new UI was written to combine elements of MacOS classic with the design of NeXTSTEP's UI.
Under the hood, it still looks and acts a lot like NeXTSTEP/OpenSTEP, but it is no less than a complete rewrite. Heck, the BSD userland that was present in last release of OpenSTEP was still functionally equivalent to 4.2BSD, which hailed from the mid to late-eighties. Now OS X is a combination of elements from all of the most current open-source BSD codebases. - kendawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5more money. it's always about more money.
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5ok, one reason: most people (by that i mean, random john doe consumer) are going to be buying new pcs with it preloaded on them. they are not going to be upgrading their current xp pc to vista because they dont know how.
another reason: Win XP Pro (non-upgrade) is already $299. nobody is complaining about that price. so for that price you can get another OS. and nobody is making you buy the ultimate edition, buy a cheaper version, get an OEM version from newegg. for that matter, nobody is making you upgrade to vista at all. - goat77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6run DXDIAG.exe and go to the "display" tab.
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I think you are talking about Singularity. But its a very young project and far from being anything useful. Kind of like Sun's Looking Glass.
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5play some of the newest and most popular game titles....thats a reason, try doing that on OSX or Linux. you may not like that reason or may not even be a gamer. thats your choice. no one is forcing this down your throat.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6116 diggs after 4 days?
Surely you jest. - drog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You don't need a reason to switch. If you like mac's, stick with them. If you like linux, stick with linux. I prefer microsoft because I only need to learn one operating system for school, work, and home. Some people love to tinker with computers, but for me it's simply a tool. I'm not going to learn a new language because english can be frustrating at times. Why should I switch?
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51. Windows XP 81%
2. Win 2000 8%
3. Win 98 5%
4. Mac 2%
5. Linux .29%

Windows has 94% not 80%. Apple market share is fallen not Microsoft. - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4people evidently expect perfection out of beta.....(darn you google!!)
- mk32066, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Thanks
- Shizlak, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7The day it launches? More like the day vista goes gold.
