- KyjL, on 08/13/2008, -0/+13419 Most Essential Open Source Applications FOR WEB DEVELOPERS
- nshah55, on 08/13/2008, -4/+75where's firefox?
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -5/+65I'll stick with paying thousands of dollars for my programs, thank you very much.
- stutimandal, on 08/13/2008, -9/+60No Iceweasel? (Firefox is not open source any more; GNU guys had some arguments on this).
No Inkscape?
No Blender?
No GIMP?
No gVim/Vim?
No Emacs?
no Mplayer?
no Pidgin?
no ghostview?
no Filezilla?
Their list is far from "most essential." - doctorinfierno, on 08/13/2008, -2/+39Firefox is inside SeaMonkey... which kinda sounds weird
- passedoutghost, on 08/13/2008, -7/+34I don't pay a cent for my thousand dollar programs...
- Epistaxis, on 08/13/2008, -4/+29That's why the rest of us have to pay a thousand dollars.
- bscene, on 08/13/2008, -2/+25phpMyAdmin FTW
- Technohamster, on 08/13/2008, -1/+23Firefox is open source free software. GNU is just dicking around.
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -1/+23You are obviously his friend, coz this list sucks!
I would suggest:
Linux
Firefox
OOo
Gimp
Pidgin - inactive, on 08/12/2008, -4/+25Awesome list. I didn't even know half of that stuff existed! I actually spent money on some software that keynotes does for me better and it's free. Cool!
- diggerpleez, on 08/13/2008, -2/+22I would venture to say that far more people use Apache httpd and MySQL everyday than anything on that list whether they know it or not.
- ExRe, on 08/13/2008, -6/+23What the hell is this?
Wordpress? A web server? What the hell is with all this web stuff doing in a "Most essential Open Source Applications" list?
The ONLY thing I would call a usable open source application would be Open Office. 99% of people do NOT own a website much less need any of this *****. - sazmy, on 08/13/2008, -2/+17Another link for high quality/tested 116 Open Source Applications is here
http://geek2live.blogspot.com/2007/07/116-open-sou ... - cheapotheclown, on 08/13/2008, -1/+16VLC?
Does the phrase "most essential" even make sense? It thought something is either essential or it's not. - jacekpoplawski, on 08/13/2008, -2/+13Where the fsck is:
1) Gimp
2) Linux
3) Blender
and of course:
0) Firefox
????????? - katievun, on 08/13/2008, -3/+12If FF wasn't OSS, there would be no Iceweasel. ;)
You are confusing trademark and copyright. And, frankly, so is RMS and crew. - santaliqueur, on 08/13/2008, -0/+9Probably waiting for it to catch on.
- gAquila, on 08/13/2008, -0/+9... and of course Blender 3D. 3D modelling, animation, renderer and game engine - All in one. Time to throw Max and Maya out of the Windows.
- arjie, on 08/13/2008, -0/+8Wait a second. GNU didn't do anything, it was the Debian Free Software Guidelines. The logo isn't Free and the name is trademarked in such a way that you have to send all changes to Mozilla for approval if you want to use it.
- Jayg28, on 08/13/2008, -2/+9If the article included bugzilla in the list it should have included subversion too.
I love OSS software, thanks to everyone who contributes. - GoSleepGo, on 08/13/2008, -2/+8How do you not put Drupal on this list?
- plr4ever, on 08/13/2008, -1/+6Quite a lot of open source apps run on Windows.
And no, i did not click your link. - bieber, on 08/13/2008, -0/+5RMS and crew are most certainly not confusing trademark and copyright: on the contrary, they've been the ones trying to clarify all this "intellectual property" confusion over the last couple decades. All they're saying is that Mozilla is using their trademark, which they don't license openly as they do their copyrights, to restrict modifications to Firefox, at least while retaining the same name. In response, they've simply rebranded the browser without the effectively-proprietary trademark.
- WalkerTXclocker, on 08/13/2008, -0/+5What part of OPEN SOURCE do you not understand?
- BrainRecall, on 08/13/2008, -1/+6This appears to be a list dedicated for web developers, not your Average Joe's. Surely something like Pidgin would have also made the list.
- santaliqueur, on 08/13/2008, -1/+5Just because an analogy SOUNDS like it was written by an idiot, doesn't mean....oh wait...
- UberNick, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4Link is related blogspam. Thankfully not another of those damn Barackrolls!
- AzureRise, on 08/12/2008, -1/+5No, but it looks very interesting.
- warrior007, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4Nice List of Applications
- YouAreDead, on 08/13/2008, -6/+10WordPress is the Best
- TnTBass, on 08/13/2008, -1/+5Correction:
19 Most Essential Open Source Applications FOR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS and WEB DEVELOPERS.
You can hardly say things like ModSecurity, Bugzilla, Mindquarry, DotProject, OpenOffice, OTRS, etc are specifically for web developers. However, it appears the blogger is both a web admin and a system admin, hence the wide variety of applications he chooses. - caltheos, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4Looking through the list of development programs, i'm amazed they don't have eclipse. Probably the most powerful OS Development application out there.
- superal1394, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4I see what you did there.
Anyway, don't forget VLC and MythTV - werries, on 08/13/2008, -2/+6aww, virus protection! windows users are so cute.
- kenplaysviola, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3Perfect timing! I had a meeting at work today about finding a ticketing system that would replace our old, legacy ticketing system. We were willing to shell out hundreds of bucks, but will give these opensource ones a shot. I googled and found some more free opensource ticketing system.
- WoollyMittens, on 08/13/2008, -3/+6No
- ToastyMallows, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3I thought I was rolled for sure, just turned out to be a ***** link!
- xaeon, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3IDEs create lazy programmers.
- init100, on 08/13/2008, -3/+6Firefox is definitely open source, but some zealots oppose Mozilla protecting their trademark.
- nybble41, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2No, you pay a thousand dollars because it's worth that much to you, and they know it. So long as that remains true there is no reason at all for them to lower the price, even if every single person who used the program were to pay them for the privilege. The extra revenue would simple mean more profit for the distributors.
- B08ama, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2Um, OpenGL? I know it's not an application, but I'd say it's pretty essential.
- Sage-Tech, on 08/12/2008, -4/+6Has anyone tried the ticketing system?
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -2/+4I am really glad to see smashing magazine all over the front page lately! I enjoy their articles
- Frost9999, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2Just installing now to check it out, I will post an update in 20 minutes.
- yokel, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2Nothing. It's still working fine. I meant no problems encountered.
- justinkuto, on 08/13/2008, -1/+3The weakest list EVAR. This dude left a lot of much greater applications and listed mostly a bunch on niche apps. Open Office Cannot be that low (if they are in order of ranking). Where is Apache? Where is MySQL? Where is Firefox? Does he know what ESSENTIAL means? ESSENTIAL: absolutely necessary; indispensable:
- Fergy, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2Please check out Komposer
- godsdead, on 08/13/2008, -1/+3Pidgin FTW, although needs webcam features.
- elfprince13, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2GIMP?
