- thekms, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24ctrl-d to deselect, how is that not there?
- Nightspark, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16As the first commenter on the site says, holding the spacebar allows you to click and drag to pan. I can't believe the article talked about the hand tool but didn't mention that.
And ctrl+z to undo? That's not Photoshop specific. Photoshop does have slightly different undo functionality, though: ctrl+z toggles your last change, while Step Backward and Step Forward are more like your traditional undo/redo commands. - wompninja, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14v is my favorite button in photoshop
- wwwdot1jesdotus, on 10/16/2007, -1/+12Spacebar is way easier than "H" for panning.
- ambiescent, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8There are some shortcuts I find useful that weren't mentioned in the article:
- Holding the spacebar activates the pan tool temporarily. Holding ctrl+space gives you the zoom in tool, alt+space the zoom out tool.
- Pressing the number keys while in the move or selection tool changes the opacity of the current layer. (The article only mentions tool opacity)
- Alt+Shift+N returns your layer mode to normal.
- Ctrl+J duplicates your layer (if you don't have a selection). If you have a selection, it copies it and pastes it to a new layer. - FTLJohnson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+733 Exceptionally Useful PhotoShop Shortcuts:
F2, F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, F8, F9, F10, F11, F12, SHIFT + F2, SHIFT + F3, SHIFT + F4, SHIFT + F5, SHIFT + F6, SHIFT + F7, SHIFT + F8, SHIFT + F9, SHIFT + F10, SHIFT + F11, SHIFT + F12, CTRL + F2, CTRL + F3,CTRL + F4,CTRL + F5, CTRL + F6, CTRL + F7, CTRL + F8, CTRL + F9, CTRL + F10, CTRL + F11,CTRL + F12, CTRL + SHIFT + F2,CTRL + SHIFT + F3,CTRL + SHIFT + F4,CTRL + SHIFT + F5, CTRL + SHIFT + F6, CTRL + SHIFT + F7, CTRL + SHIFT + F8,CTRL + SHIFT + F9,CTRL + SHIFT + F10, CTRL + SHIFT + F11, CTRL + SHIFT + F12
Define these with actions of whatever combination of options and tasks you would like.
I like assigning new document, rotate canvas cw + ccw, (modified with shift to rotate layers), resize -50%, create levels adjustment layer,
make new layer copy of "background" labeled "retouch", export a jpeg to a "holding tank" directory, create a set of wallets (this one is a complicated action), and duplicate image...
There are more I use, but those are the general purpose ones I think other people might use... at least in principle... - SteelyDuran, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E?!
More like a keyboard LONGCUT. - joeycerone, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9[ = decrease brush size
] = increase brush size
dugg for those. sweet! - AntoineDigg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7ctrl + alt + shift + s = quite useful for web designers.
But the most important shorcut of all is the "space bar" like most softwares out there. - ChocoMidget, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11Actually for Stamp Visible you don't need to create a new layer to copy into, just hold Shift + Option + Command + E, or Shift + Alt + Control + E for windows.
- LowROI, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4ctrl+shift+E? No one a fan of merging layers anymore?
- mannymix03, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Adobe Spokesperson: "The title should be 18 Exceptionally Useful Shortcuts for Adobe® Photoshop® software."
- SpankyPants, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This thread is far more useful than the site it links to.
Thanks for all the tips ;) - jon3k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Why? You can just hold down control to switch to the move tool, then, as soon as you let go, it switches back to the tool you were just using.
- zclip, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3some of those are really stupid and should never be used
1. H (Hand Tool) — just press space and temporarily switch to the hand tool, release and you're back to whatever tool you were using (this, of course doesn't work if you're currently using the type tool as it will just enter a space - doh)
2. Z (Zoom Tool) — You should almost never switch to the actual zoom tool. hold ctrl+space to active zoom in tool and alt+space (or alt+ctrl+space for some) to use zoom out tool. let go and you're back to what ever tool you were using
5. Ctrl + Z (Undo) - you should almost always use alt+ctrl+z to step back. it let's you go back 20 actions by default and you can change the number in the preferences. clicking shift+ctrl+z redoes the commands you just undid up to the last command you used. ctrl-z is imo obsolete
1 - 0 opacity change also works for layers (in fact you have to be very careful that you are in the right tool). if you have the brush tool selected it will change brush opacity. if you have the move tool (v) which is the black arrow on top, selected, then you will change the opacity of an entire layer. - foomojive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2because you can use move and hold down space to switch to the hand tool.
- sancho320, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yes that is a good list, but:
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=42&url=http%3A%2F%2Fmorris-photographics.com%2Fphotoshop%2Fshortcuts%2Fdownloads%2FPSCS3_Keyboard_Shortcuts_Mac.pdf&ei=DqKlRpncMobEggLpyrm8AQ&usg=AFQjCNEJFf2W7FaQiUkZXerxz_Ekd6JFlQ&sig2=sPD02PjorHT-3vj9t56iqg - jon3k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Except that it's the default shortcuts and very useful.
- jbeaudry, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does anybody know how to switch between open windows inside photoshop on a mac? cmd+tilde obviously doesn't work. Also, I just got a second monitor for my mac, and I am wondering how to move my main photoshop window (the one with file, edit, view, etc.) over to the new monitor...
- muniak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think v is one of my most used as well...
- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1BZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! Wrong. When you hold down switch for the move tool, it'll apply to layers other than the one you've selected. It's notorious for moving the background when you have the text selected, and it's also the leading cause of suicide for graphic designers. That tool is freaking annoying.
Not only that, but "CTRL" won't switch to the move tool with every tool. The vector-based tools show a vector-only move tool. - GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thanks for that. This list was terrible. How was the "New Layer" shortcut advanced?
- pynchon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2some I find useful as well:
f - fullscreen mode
ctrl + alt + z - undo many steps back
tab - hide palettes
ctrl + h - hide extras - jon3k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No - i usually ctrl + shift + c, ctrl+n, ctrl+v, ctrl+alt+shift+s
(copy merged -> new document -> past -> save for web) - jon3k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You've got a point there, that is a staple of my photochop arsenal.
- jon3k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Don't forget shift+tab to hide everything except the toolbar.
- thebellmaster1x, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2What the *****.
Alt+Backspace - Fill with foreground color!
Hello? Where is this one?! I have yet to create an image from scratch without using this! - captaincanuck76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is my favorite shortcut. It's called: The claw!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Much better list already submitted

- Cirrius, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1ctrl+shift+f is probably my favorite "unknown"shortcut. This joker probably doesn't even know about it though if he uses H to pan *snicker*
The one shortcut I really want is a brush rotation hotkey :( - davewashere, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Because you touch yourself
- sd12013, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0word!
Alt+Backspace = Fill with foreground color
Ctrl+Backspace = Fill with background color
"d" resets foreground and background colors to default
ctrl+t = scale object
Everyone knows the obvious ctrl+z but you gotta include ctrl+alt+z to step back beyond the previous step. - livtf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I change Step Backward to Ctrl(CMD)+Z and Step Forward to Ctrl(CMD)+Shift+Z so that these commands work the exact same as undo/redos in the other Adobe apps.
- Jumboto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I only like the short cuts I can do with only my left hand, and that is without stretching it way out.
Except for: Ctrl +/- for zoom. - rigelt, on 10/14/2007, -0/+0and ctrl-h to hide selection...
- boxerjess, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Is there a preprogrammed shortcut for shadow/highlight in CS2 - Anyone? Never could find one.
- cobr@, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1mine is p. with a little v and some cmd + j, and a sort of frequent b or even a or cmd-del or opt del or even shift f5

http://www.theonion.com/content/node/38976 - kierand, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1What is all this "Control" talk? It's the Apple key dammit!

- svenjick, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1The title should not contain "exceptionally"...
- phpCypher, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0[control] + [alt] + z (undo for when you want to go back further than regular [control + z])
[control] + [alt] + [shift] + s (save for web, priceless)
[control] + e (merge selected layers)
