- wernst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First off, this article shows you how to make a Barts PE disc that works from a USB thumbdrive. This is NOT the same as booting Windows from a USB thumb drive. Close, but not the same. Secondly, it requires you to use a commercial tool to finish the job in some cases.
Now there's no doubt that this is handy, but I can only think of two situations where a bootable USB thumbdrive is any better than using the Bart PE discmaking scripts to make, well, a disc (CD or DVD). 1: When you want to burn a disc from the bootable disc, and 2: when the optical drive on a PC is damaged or absent. And in exchange, you get to tie up a 256 MB thumbdrive (cost: $40) instead of a blank CD (cost: 5 cents), and it won't work on older systems that can't boot from USB.
Just make a Barts PE CD and keep it in your toolbox. It will save your life. Save the thumbdrive for copying off data. - Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Why you'd want to do this? I have no idea."
Well, in case of emergencies. The XP disk is, itself, bootable, but it's limited in many ways. - DesolataX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1a) This is a Dupe http://www.digg.com/technology/XP_On_Your_Thumb_Drive
b) This IS NOT true Windows XP on a thumbdrive, it is MUCH more complicated than that, That is simply BartPE.
c) Windows XP Will not fit on anything below a 1gb unless it heavily modified and many files and features are removed
d) True XP would kill your thumbdrive in 1,000,000 writes, which on windows xp, is about 10 hours.
e) I have tried this, and it SUCKS! - 84productions, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1here is a single one step !!

Maybe this would work to help my laptop boot from an external usb drive. I was able to get ubuntu to do that, windows too would be nice... - QettoE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Live Knoppix CD will do magic when it comes to none-bootable Windows.

- coffeegeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Now this would be darn funny to stick your thumb drive into a Computer store display computer long enough to get the drive formatted and then yank it out.....
