- MusicalGenius, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I love vista, and no, I'm not a moron. But the guys shouldn't call him an expert, I agree.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13can all you linux fanboys STFU?
it obviously states Windows Vista on the title, why are you even clicking on this !?
each to their own, dont you ***** get it? - xraycat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Actually I used Vista RC1 for quite a while and didn't realize there was actually functionality like the ones listed available. These are pretty neat.
I didn't try RC2 for very long as there was a severe problem with the network adapter driver dropping the connection when the bandwidth use got high. Once the driver issues get figured out then Vista will be an excellent OS I think. I'd just rather wait until the hardware manufacturers get their drivers ready before I completely change over to Vista. - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I highly suggest that if you're "living" linux you should probably get off the computer for a while.
- jsls, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Vista RC2 not XP
- hotdamn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I've spent a lot of time on XP lately due to Rosetta on my Macbook Pro, and it only got me more stoked for Vista. As weird as it sounds, with some fine tuning especially in the GUI department, Windows would be kickass and I hope Vista lives up to that.
- OhJay, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10"Learn to live Linux"? What the hell is that supposed to mean?

- Feej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Tip #12
Shut the f#ck up for gods sake! - waterdrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was hoping for better tips. I'm disappointed.
- d722002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Some cool registry hacks or something would have been nice, but still good tips nonetheless.
And would all these people please shut up about linux? stop trying to convert the world to a little-used communistic operating system and leave us happy windows and mac users alone. - robbyjo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Also, look at the credit: All belongs to Ed Bott... (the writer) Yay!
- streak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That #1 looks like a really good tip for the security conscious.
- Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Jimmy,
Watch this video. One good example of a great improvement coming in Vista:

Also, here's a list:

- frase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well... those were some pretty handy tips. I've been testing Vista since Beta 1 and I wish I'd known a few of those earlier!
t - kingamoon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Don't tell me what to do !!
- Mantewarless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Little used??...communistic??...sheesh...it's widely used, and more like socialistic.
I find Vista to be a bit on the resource intrinsic side, using 512 MB of ram when idle(if you are using Ultimate with Aero) but not overburdened (yet). The interface is a bit to Applesk (wonder if Steve Jobs got a kick back), and the changes in the GUI for finding the settings are a bit misleading for the average user. However, I do applaud M$ for the change. Familiarity breeds contempt, and I think M$ finally realizes it.
As an ISP, I am in the process of actually prepping instructions for users, just so we don't have the confusion. The good thing is I have to opportunity and time to be able to do this, since it is part of my job.
Second, network usage: users in the network will also need some tutoring, since logging off and changing users (or even domains) is all about your knowledge of the network naming scheme. To transition from the Network log in to the Machine log in (network name to local machine domain), you have to type the name of said domain in front of the log in name to transition, ie. thedomainusername.
Internet usage...lovely...considering IE 7 a glossed-over replicant of FF/Moz, which still are faster, more adaptable, and have better extensions and plug-ins...and you don't have to pay for them. M$ is still after your paycheck. FF works with Vista as it stands, so why even deal with IE. Amazing what those socialistic communities can develop way ahead of M$.
All in all, Vista for the everyday Joe is going to disappoint the everyday Joe...and here's why.
If any of you can remember back when Win95 was the rage, and along came Win98. Well, it was the Angel of Redemption here to save your PC souls from the crude evils of it's predecessor...but only if your hardware met certain requirements. Guess what...that Angel is back, and with a vengeance.
While specifications call for a minimal of an 800 MHz process, and 512Mb ram...be prepared. Tested this theory with a bare bones Vista install...and it is comparable to installing XP Pro on a PII 650 with 512 Mb of PC-133 Ram. Slow to boot, slow to process , slow to browse, slow to shutdown...slow, slow, slow. If you ain't got the hardware (and I would suggest you really read those relating to "what you need to run Vista with Aero"), then don't get the software.
As for what I am testing it on: P-4 3.4 EE, 1 Gb DDR 400Mhz, 7200 rpm 100Gb, ATI 9800 256Mb Mobility Radian....yes, it's a laptop...and it handles it well with all the menu animation turned off. Turn on Aero, and watch the ram get eaten like chocolate at your kids birthday party.
Enough of my rambling...... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ive got an expert tip/tweak for Windows Vista, Dont buy it straight away, wait till someone hacks it so that not only do you get it for free, but they can get rid of the DRM crap...
- nmeadata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The scanner note was from the windows vista upgrade adviser, Hope they finally added some decent screen savers.
- nmeadata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I might try vista if it supported my hp scanjet 3570c usb scanner, last time I had to buy a new scanner was upgrading from win 95 because xp would not support a plustek parallel port scanner. Dejavu i won't till I have to :(
- dr3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0uh this would be HP's responsibility no? check their support website maybe ?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Until there's a Network Operating environment available for Linux that is as robust and easy to use as MS's Active Directory.... stuff it.
- streak, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Vista looks just like more lipstick on a pig to me.
- kingamoon, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Vista = Job Security
How are you IT people not seeing that.
GGOSH .. IDIOTS! - joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2gj not backing up your argument with any relevant facts
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4As being in the IT industry as well, I too, fear the best of vista.... its going to be a B-I-T-C-H
- Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Tip # 11.
Avoid Vista, stick with Win XP or go Linux with Wine if you can.
Buying Vista is supports terrorism and makes every American mans dick 1" inch shorter. - ignavus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2(not a linux fanboy; however...)
if it really were to each his own that'd be great. given the obscene amount of spam non-windows users receive from cracked windows boxes (to cite just one consequence of MS malware), it's in all our interests to see exactly how insecure vista is going to be.
given that power user tip number one is "turn off security," it's going to be pretty bad all right. yikes. one has to wonder what MS is thinking. - mdman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2most of these are already available on XP, and none of them are performance enhancing or expert tweaks
- sarusa, on 10/12/2007, -16/+10Expert tip number 2: Don't touch Vista with a ten foot pole. For at least a year, probably longer.
- thombone, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7Yeah the BEST way to tweak Vista is to not run it at all.
I've had to learn it for upcoming IT and support reasons, but I just can't believe what a convoluted mess it is. - kingamoon, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2How are you IT people not seeing that.
GGOSH .. IDIOTS! - cmost, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0"Vista looks just like more lipstick on a pig to me."
ROTFLMAO!!! Considering what a resource hog Vista is purported to be, this is quite apropos. LOL! - Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5Expert tip number 3: Don't open your wallet to Bill Gates anymore. Leave the crappy software on the store shelves. Learn to live and love Linux!
- karn, on 10/12/2007, -27/+7What? Install linux? (Didn't rtfa)
