- DuckSoup1, on 06/29/2009, -7/+123Rather than looking at this as a loss, I view it as a success that we the U.S made it this far. This is the first time we have competed for such a title.
/Also we beat Spain which is just awesome.
Good job USA. - EllisSpice, on 06/29/2009, -10/+51Football (soccer to you Americans), on the FRONT page? I must be dreaming!
Oh wait, if it was a dream, that would be England, and not Brazil... - wannarto, on 06/29/2009, -4/+42USA 2-3 Brazil??? I think it is USA who should be proud here...
I never expected that - commiecat, on 06/29/2009, -3/+29That was a great game. I really thought they could pull it off -- the way Howard defended against Spain and in the first half against Brazil, it didn't seem like anything would get through. Can't help but congratulate a team that scores 3 goals when they needed it.
Donovan has been our best player for so long that it's hard to believe he's just 27. That was a gorgeous break he ran to score the second goal. Great effort in their first FIFA cup title game going against a soccer powerhouse in Brazil. Can't wait to see the U.S. during World Cup next year. - IamNOTmrT, on 06/29/2009, -2/+25Excellent match! Brazil deserved to win in fairness, but it was a great performance from the US. If they can continue to perform to that level next year, they shouldn't have a problem making it through to at least the last 8 in the world cup.
- pantsperch, on 06/29/2009, -1/+23No, we just think that it could do a whole hell of a lot for the case for soccer as a professional sport in the US if we actually won something, especially against a team like Brazil. The defeat of Spain was STUNNING, and the fact that we were 2 goals up on ***** BRAZIL at halftime was totally thrilling.
I hope it bodes well for the US in the World Cup - frankly, as a soccer fan, it's exhausting being American because while you always watch and root for them, you have to pick another, better team from South America or Europe because you want someone to root for in later rounds.
I just wish the US would stop thinking of soccer as only something that kids play and realize that it's the biggest sport in the world - and we look like jackasses to them. Props to the US team for being pretty ***** awesome despite a vacuum of support at home. - rchargel, on 06/29/2009, -2/+21I was cheering for the USA and I am Brazilian. Robinhos a great player, but I've never seen him as smug. He's always had nothing but respect for his opponents. Here is what he said after Brazil defeated the Italians (3-0) in group play: "It was a tough game tonight, but we showed our quality in the end. It was important for us to play well after starting the tournament with a bit of a bump. It feels great to be here and heading towards the semi-finals. I don't think we're favourites, we just want to compete in all of our games to the best of our ability."
Hardly a smug comment after such an overwhelming victory. - lacrimosa2008, on 06/29/2009, -2/+20respect from germany
- joeshmoe1, on 06/29/2009, -2/+19The first half was amazing, I don't watch much soccer, but I made it a point to see all the US games in this tourny. Watching them beat Spain was awesome, it made it to espn instant classic and was replayed just hours after it ended.
I don't know what happened, but the second half, they were dominated, it looked like they just threw out everything they did right in the first half and decided that playing defense would be a better option. Oh well, it was an amazing game either way, glad I sat down to watch it. Gotta love 45 min halves with no commercials!!! Wish college basketball was like this! - madk, on 06/29/2009, -0/+13As an American I always find it odd that soccer isn't popular among adults. It is by far the most popular youth sport but seems to fade off in late high school. Pretty much every kid grows up with some soccer experience.
- IamNOTmrT, on 06/29/2009, -5/+18Actually, 2-0 in football is kind of the same as 2-0 in hockey. And Brazil are a half-decent team too
- AnonAmaton, on 06/29/2009, -1/+14you knew it was going to end bad when we still had a 1 point lead and it already felt like we were losing.
it still blew my mind we came that close. hopefully we can become a bigger competitor as time goes on. - rchargel, on 06/29/2009, -0/+12As a Brazilian, I was extremely impressed by the US team, but you're right. It felt like after Fabiano scored that first goal of the second half the American team played as if they were resigned to defeat. I was actually cheering for them yesterday against my own countrymen (we've won plenty of times, and who cares about the Confederations Cup). They played so well the first half, the second goal by Donovan was like watching Ronaldo or Romario in their prime. And I've seen few goalies with the skill of Howard. He was amazing.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -5/+17@Phi01, Where did I say I was american?
"but its comments like yours that would want me to stop cheering for the USA and back Brazil"
Kid I don't care if a bus repeatedly drives over your head let alone who you're shaking your pompoms for.
You ***** idiot. - IamNOTmrT, on 06/29/2009, -2/+13What's not to like about Brazil? They play the most entertaining football of any team in the world.
- JimSwarthow, on 06/29/2009, -0/+10you should learn more about soccer before posting - in particular, pay attention to the part where it says the game has not 1, but 2 halves
USA did great. that they even made it that far says a whole lot about the current state of US soccer - the new FIFA rankings will be up on July 1st. http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/ranking/lastrank ... - if I had to bet I'd say USA should gain 2 or 3 spots - dalectrics, on 06/29/2009, -2/+12Why do you think he is American? I'm going to say he's British.
- vidaeboa, on 06/29/2009, -2/+12also - and i'm just throwing this out there - they were playing brazil
- rchargel, on 06/29/2009, -2/+12One more thing. It should be known that the US is a much loved team in Brazil. The Brazilian tradition is to always cheer for another American team if we can't win (except Argentina). We like to keep trophies in the Americas. The current US team is known in Brazil as the Obama Boys (a pun on the Samba Boys).
- wTheOnew, on 06/29/2009, -1/+10Exactly. The U.S. beating Spain and then having such a close game against Brazil is nothing to scoff at. Great season U.S.!
- Doggalina, on 06/29/2009, -1/+10The U.S. was in the finals of a major world tournament.
- Sanderson9009, on 06/29/2009, -4/+13Perhaps after this season more American's will catch interest into this "Fütbol" sport.
- rchargel, on 06/29/2009, -3/+12Why would you hate the Brazilian team? Do you know about us? We are hardly sore winners. You must be thinking about the Argentinians or the Italians. We play fair, don't try to make dives, and we play well. There are players on our team that, in the past, have been ***** (I'm looking at you Romario), but those players don't stay on the team long. But Koby Jones was an arrogant ***** too, and he sucked.
- lysdexia, on 06/29/2009, -1/+9I loved it - so much for the burgeoning USA football team and culture to be proud of and work on. I really wanted them to win because I can think of no other country at this time that will work to improve their game so much and as a result raise the bar for all.
First class! - rchargel, on 06/29/2009, -2/+10Yes, there is nothing more interesting than a 60 minute game that takes hours to play because after every 20 seconds of action they need to break for 3 minutes of commercials.
- IamNOTmrT, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7@krispy - you're right mate, never seen a match in my life until yesterday. it's a minority sport in my country that never gets any press coverage.
- rchargel, on 06/29/2009, -4/+11What's sad is the US didn't care about soccer when they were so close to a major victory. Americans' view of the world is so myopic. I remember the last Super Bowl here in the US. The media kept calling it the most watched sporting even in the world. According to Bloomberg it was watched by 95.4 million people, and the highest rated Super Bowl ever had a viewership of 97.4 million people. The last World Cup final match in comparison had 715 million viewers and the World Cup in total had about 2.2 billion viewers. That's greater than the entire population of the United States. Then they called the victors the "World Champions." How big is your world that it only includes the United States? It's like the "World Series" of baseball that only allows American and Canadian teams, even though baseball is a popular sport in the Caribbean and many parts of Asia.
- scoot2006, on 06/29/2009, -1/+8It looks like when we get a lead the coaches tell them to bunker in and try to hold their lead. No offense is a horrible defense. A good balance is best, from my experiences.
The players did great through most of the cup, though. I'm glad to see us finally getting a bit of recognition on the world stage. Hell, front page of digg, I'm glad we're getting some recognition in our own country. - Huuhkaja, on 06/29/2009, -1/+8Going by the West Ham United avatar, I'd guess he probably is a 'soccer' fan.
- ricorurik, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6@rchargel
I would dig you up 50 times if I could for that! - oldhick, on 06/29/2009, -5/+11Speak for yourself. There many soccer fans in the US!
- rchargel, on 06/29/2009, -1/+7Germany, who did not compete in this tournament, always gets respect. I was very sad that the Germans lost the last world cup final. Then again I never liked the Italians team much. They take more dives than a Chinese Olympian.
- FapCommander, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6Simple, Brazil decided to start playing football in the second half, Brazil were woeful in the first half
- fandyboy, on 06/29/2009, -3/+9@Anubis2051
Your loss. - micahgoulart, on 06/29/2009, -1/+7That wasn't the B team. Sure Ronaldinho was missing, but he's been out of shape and in his curent state, would not be called up to the WC next year.
- FreddieD, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5Did you see Brazil's roster?? That was *not* their B team.
- wolfzombie, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5You must be thinking of Germany's loss in the UEFA Euro 2008 final.
- Choobie, on 06/29/2009, -1/+6And Baseball. I can hardly call that a sport, what with 10 players standing around while 1 does most of the work for each team.
- mickstephenson, on 06/29/2009, -2/+7Errrm, did he actually insult anyone? Infact did he even explicitly express disapproval?
No he merely acknowledged the difference in names.
And you go around throwing what basically amounts to racial slurs.
You sir are a *****.
I think an apology would be appropriate. A simple "sorry for being a stupid *****" would suffice. - Platina, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5Yeah so true, they play so boring fotball.
- dynamojoe, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5"do u americans really think you should be the best at everything?"
We're damn well going to try. - rchargel, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5We've never been a very consistent team. Sometime was blow great teams like Italy out of the water (3-0), then we fall apart and allow the French to cream us in a World Cup final (0-3).
- Chunken, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5I liked how the Brazil team didn't trip about that goal they didn't get credit for. The Brazil team knew it was in but the ref's didn't see it. But they didn't stand around with their hands up complaining to the ref's like the USA players were doing every time they felt they were fouled, they just regrouped and kept the pressure on. That's the sign of a champion right there.
- pcpimpster, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5But probably not.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -6/+10Speak for yourself, I am expecting a lot out of Team USA next summer.
- fryke, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4Germany didn't play in the last world cup final. Italia won against France.
- CanceledCzech, on 06/29/2009, -2/+6I want soccer to replace football in the states :(
- mickstephenson, on 06/29/2009, -2/+5I take that means you are a 15 year old then.
That's ***** a British person is someone born in Britain, be they black, white, asian. You said "snaggle tooth limey" you are clearly referring to an Anglo-Saxon, and whether or not it was racist it's still prejudiced and even if it wasn't a prejudiced insult it was still completely uncalled for, and frankly childish. - IamNOTmrT, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3In the past there's never been the set up which other sports had, that would take it beyond that. No top class coaching, no professional league, no mainstream media interest, etc ....
All of this is coming into place now in the US, so the sport should really grow, and the US will become one of the top international teams. Give it another 20 years and the US will be genuine world cup contenders. - teamr, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3in all honestly it would have been 4-2 if it wasnt for a couple of near blind linesmen...but gg USA. well done.
Now if we can just get you to stop calling it "soccer".... -
