- datcrazydj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Dammit. I read it as "Beckham to become own MLS Soccer Team". >.
- galahan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Real Salt Lake is NOT owned by Real Madrid.
- doctorvee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Everybody's missing the real reason why football hasn't taken off in the USA. For a sport to be successful in the USA it has to be built around advert breaks. With no breaks in play for forty-five minutes at a time, no television network in the USA is willing to give it the exposure it deserves.

"football/soccer will probably never catch on in the US, because we're impatient bastards who crave constant scoring, and football/soccer doesn't really offer that."
Then explain why hockey is so popular. Even Baseball, the All-American sport, doesn't offer constant scoring.
Keep in mind that it took 30 years for the NFL to become extremely popular, and that was during a time when there weren't many professional leagues in the US. The MLS is only 10 years old. - Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Well *****, this kind of changes everything doesn't it?
"Ambassador to the US" my ass. All business, and most likely a non-profitable one at that. Just like American football will never become an international sport, football/soccer will probably never catch on in the US, because we're impatient bastards who crave constant scoring, and football/soccer doesn't really offer that. Not just that, but because of the pathetic US fanbase, all of our best soccer/football athletes end up playing in the Euro leagues.
Sidenote: I'm a soccer/football fan. - GonadHunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13If he earns what he will be reportedly earning at LA Galaxy, he could easily afford to buy a team.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Julie isn't credible enough?
- dhulser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14you used that same joke on the last beckham story...
it wasn't funny then either - dscx, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20I am British and every time I've tried to watch American Football i just get far too frustrated by all the stopping and starting. It's boring, they spend almost as much time in between plays as they do playing. Besides, whats with all that armor they wear too - it's like Rugby but for sissy girls...
- galactus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'm extremely excited to get some Star Power for the MLS. I'm a massive footie fan and as a resident of Houston I can say that there was a ton of excitement over the Dynamo winning the MLS Cup. I agree that the US is very impatient with their sports, but we're also obsessed with sensationalism. Beckham, Ronaldo, and Figo can definitely get the pot stirring. Americans don't know who they are (aside from Becks) but it doesn't matter. They'll be told to get excited and they more than likely will. Hopefully they'll realize that Soccer's a phenomenal sport and this can start a change in the way the country looks at it.
- lava, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Names only become strong by reputation and the strength of the franchise. Manchester United and Real Madrid are the strongest soccer franchises in the world.. If LA Galaxy was the best team in the world, no one would be making fun of the name.
Just think about it... Google's a stupid name. And also, there's a Real Salt Lake (owned by Real Madrid). That's a stupid name too.
Although, if he ends up owning a soccer team, he should name it Beckham. That's an awesome name. - nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"Of course you Americans don't take football seriously - Galaxy? What kind of name is that? =P"
Would "San Andreas United" be better? Seriously, here in the US, what you name your soccer team is about as important as what you name your pet hamster . . . no one cares. - barryiggins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Oh, come on now, that's not really fair...
Have you ever had curried goat? Its quite delicious - barryiggins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9How much is an MLS team really worth?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What position is a 'stopper'???
- JurneyAhed, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Of course you Americans don't take football seriously - Galaxy? What kind of name is that? =P
- Rethcir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You're a cliche. Some british person says this in every soccer post. (not that there's anything wrong with either type of football)
I wish there was some exposure to Cricket here in the US, it seems pretty interesting to me as a baseball fan. - dscx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah I am, don't get me started on NASCAR vs. real motorsport :D In all honesty though baseball looks pretty cool compared to cricket.
(Edit: good point cronus) - Twelvevolts, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10killinger777 - football is a game played world-wide and involves a round ball that is not suprisingly kicked around with feet. There may be a North American version where people run into each other with heavily armoured suits - but this is vastly inferior to the beautiful game of football.
If you have to pick up the ball and run with it, then Rugby and Rugby League play without the helmets and are better sports to watch. - Akronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Soccer requires a different type of intelligence. It isn't about memorizing plays or anything like that. It's more about situational awareness and a having a very fast speed of thinking. I can't really explain it, but if you ever watch professional soccer, you will see what I am talking about.
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The ONE time a post actually BELONGS as a reply to the first post . . . it isn't.
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Do you know why he's coming over here? Turns out it might have to do with the all mighty Xenu. I hate those goddamn scientologists.
http://nydailynews.com/front/story/488357p-411202c.html - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hey, just because they wear kevlar body armour and a crash helmet for a bit of Rugby doesn't make them sissy girls. No really though, it appears you don't understand American Football.
The way that game works - most specifically how and when tackling is allowed, you could easily get killed without any protection even if you're a big bloke who plays Rugby - although in Rugby, you can get lots more bloody injuries than in American Football - although what's a bit of claret between friends?
I've seen an american marine being introduced to Rugby after playing American Football, and you've never seen anyone look so shocked as he did when someone flattened his nose in a friendly manner, but then I think most Rugby players would be pretty shocked on an American Football field, because a lot of those tackles would have you exiting the sport, if they didn't kill someone first.
As for real football, what the HELL is David Beckham doing piddling about in the US? I'd be surprised if any football team there could pay him anything like what he's used to, even allowing for his value having gone downhill, and is he likely to find a decent game anywhere? - JurneyAhed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is the Real is Real Salt Lake pronounced the English way, or similar to how Real Madrid is pronounced?
- spanner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Football had huge growth in America in the 1970's but it died for the mundane reason that TV companies couldn't put adverts on in the middle of a match.. Guess what Grid Iron and Baseball are perfect for adverts, thats why they are popular.
So an entire sport practically died because of advertising pressure.
As typical you will find grunts who say its not played here because "its not an american sport". Not realising that yet again they are victims of their own society. - Akronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Steelersguy, only Brazilians generally do that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Beckham just an OK player? LOL! Have you ever watched his games? He's a walking football GOD! I don't think there is any other football player has put in as much work and practice as he did. He may not be the most talented, but his skill is almost perfection.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, he's a PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER.
Hello? :-) - LaGStAr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7credible source please.
- dscx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Agreed. Can't beat a bit of the old egg-chasing...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why the hell would he want to finish up his career in the US? The sport of soccer isnt even truly appreciated here in the states. I would want to finish up my career where im at least somewhat respected. But then again, for that paycheck, I guess who the ***** cares.
- spanner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Real sports like grid iron where players are covered in so much padding they look like they would bounce if they fell over? Where they effectively play two teams for one side so players hardly get a sweat up on the field?
Or a real sport like rugby, where its man against man, and truely tough combat for the entire game. - dscx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Rugby is more violent and been played for far longer and as far as i know head trauma doesnt happen too much :) "cauliflower ear" maybe but a bit of rough and tumble is probably good for you. I stand by my original point...
- Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6NY's team used to be the MetroStars (NY/NJ MetroStars, as the team plays in New Jersey, but is generally known as a New York team), but then the owner of the Red Bull company bought the team last year and changed the name to the Red Bull. It pisses me off, and that's why I stopped watching their games. Not just that, the bastard that owns the Red Bull company wants to buy multiple sports teams and name them ALL the Red Bull. WTF?!
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Eat it *****. If Beckham can say "soccer", you can too.
- Gwyddyon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I call *****. Luis Figo is not coming to the MLS - he's signed on to a Saudi club. If the article can't get such a well-publicized fact right, I don't see why the rest of it should be trusted.
- Stea1th, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think it will take more then a few players to get soccer going in america. It's like trying to get baseball going over in europe..sure there is a few people over
there that watch. Honestly, I american just don't like soccer as much as all the other countries. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3HOLY ***** I MUST BE DREAMING, beckham, ronaldo, and figo playing for u.s. clubs? omg this is even bigger than pele playing for the new york cosmos. I LIVE IN NEW YORK. HOLY *****. im gonna watch every ny red bulls game now. HOLY *****. and also the coach of the german national team is switching over to the u.s. national team. I predict some ass kickings in the 2010 world cup.
- voltage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2same way as Real Madrid.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Im getting very interested in the MLS. Now that Toronto will have a team, I'm hoping to go check it out this coming season- hopefully when they play galaxy so I can see Beckham play (although he's not as good as he used to be, thats for sure.)
- allaboutdatiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2By the time Beckham's done playing, MLS teams will be going for chump change. Oh, wait a minute. They already are. If David had his $250M today, he could buy the whole freaking league.
So maybe this is a good thing. The aging international stars come here, suck all the money out of the doofi that run MLS, then buy the whole thing on the cheap and FINALLY RUN IT THE RIGHT WAY ... complete with the drama of relegation. - pejeno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"And football (soccer) will never take off in America because they aren't passionate about it. "
Maybe you aren't but it IS a very popular sport among Hispanic immigrants, and guess how many enter the states every year? By 2050 there will be more immigrants in the states than white people (most of them Hispanic) and guess what sport they enjoy?
Do the math ;) - Canute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, as an european I have to agree with a lot of you that football will probably not catch on. I played football for 8 years when I was younger, and it is still damn fun to play a match with a couple of friends. However watching it on TV is boring as hell, too much downtime.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"""Eat it *****. If Beckham can say "soccer", you can too."""
Beckham says "soccer"?
Wow, he must be hungry for the cash - that must be slightly more uncomfortable than calling it "ass-touching-ball" for a football player. - kman004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's football as in customfootballshop.com
- Woknblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought I had "sports" turned off on the customize digg option........anyway
oh yeah, Beckham... anyone remember this bit of interesting news? HE CAN'T DO HIS 6 YEAR OLD SON'S MATH HOMEWORK!!
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2006-03/01/content_4241154.htm - scruffeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, being tall is generally good but for a defensive midfielder it's not usually required. More about pace and stamina and being able to read the game. You're talking about someone who plays in front of a back 4, right? All I'm saying is that being tall is usually more desirable for a central defender or striker
- allaboutdatiki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yep. Your dreaming. :)
