- 000jr000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I've used all 10 and the list really is dead on. I will say, though, that someone interested enough to run down this list should also check out WHAX and Auditor separately. Although Backtrack is awesome, not everything carries over from the WHAX/Auditor merge. They each just have a different way of doing things. To each their own and all that good jazz.
Auditor: http://www.remote-exploit.org/index.php/Auditor_main
WHAX (discontinued): http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=whoppix
And if you get bored, there's always these:

Sniffing for web pages and pics.
I'm still trying to get those pictures out of my head. - nbx909, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3woot nubuntu got in! even though the head dev is a poorly motivated english drunk
- _jinx_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4nUbuntu is the ***** nit!
- tombee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Except that problem doesn't exist in nUbuntu.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, nUbuntu!! who cares if the root password is open in breezy?
- Duelus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Go nUbuntu and TomB
- viperman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have never thought about a root kit in any live distro, alphaner, but I guess it could happen, but if you stick with the big name live distros I don't think there would be any thing in there. These guys are working for security not trying to root kit you. You have experience with this problem?
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fairly nice list.. Backtrack is probobaly the best one out there, Pentoo looks pretty nice..
There was a really small pentesting distro that I used in VMWare which was perfect for it, called.. Audidus or something, which was only 50mb, shame I can't remeber the name properly..
Auditor/WHAX are still good too, though their kinda obsoleted by Backtrack..
- Ben - JoeTheTech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am having problems with the Operator Download. It is a 588+ MB download but Firefox and IE both say done after about 180 MB have been downloaded.
Does someone have another download link to Operator v3.3.20.
I have all the others. No problems with their downloads
Thanks - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good list, I like nUbuntu
- alphanerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent article. I have used Whax, Auditor, knoppix and backtrack and untill this article didn't know the others existed. I am a big fan of auditor from way back. Backtrack is looking the most promissing due to its modularity and ability to easilly modify the packages and updates. But I won't download it untill I can get the delevolper addition that lets you see exactly what modules are installed and remove the ones you don't want. Plus I am always worried about hidden rootkits in live distros. Although Its made by the same mob that made auditor and I trust auditor. I guess working in security means you have to be little paranoid.
Auditor also has some great video demostrations from irongeeks site. - snowballs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1In spite of FreeSBIE 1.1 not in the list, still dugg +
- senderpf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Great list thanks.
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm supposed to take this article as credible when the author can't even spell PHLAK correctly. There isn't any c in the name...
- n1ko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1live boot cd's are the best thing that ever happened to linux.
- AF-Geek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow! Great list. Time to kill off all my download bandwidth!
- phray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1One thing the article doesn't mention is that PHLAK is the only one of these that currently has a supported release for USB drives. Hacking from USB is fun.
- gilbert2048, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2nice mikesum32 "knoppix-std and my school network" I have done similar
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1good list...
BackTrack is the best, then phlak - slack31337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1P.H.L.A.K is a sweet distro i have used it quite a few times and has been everthing i needed
- mdshort, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I don't know if your out of date or you just like using old crap, but whax and auditor have been merged into "backtrack".
