- danlemire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oops, firefox extension problems. Sorry, move along, nothing to see here.
- ever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg.
SafeXP is also worth checking out. Nice, tiny program for similar stuff. - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice, now if they'd make one for the apple software that calls home - itunes and quicktime I'd be happy too!
- Pizpump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Name me one thing XP can do that 2000 cannot (and hyperthreading does NOT count because if you actually bought a Pentium 4 the joke is on you)."
System Restore - yathosho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the circle closes here. when i coded xpy, i added a feature to disable the lmhash - something i learned from the first episode of the broken. thanks kev!
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm one of those people who didn't know about this. Previously I'd done all this by hand, so I'm happy :)
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Disarm? I wasn't aware IE or Windows Media Player were killing people and blowing crap up."
They've been blowing crap up, and who knows maybe even someone lost their jobs when it caused critical dataloss that they hadn't backed up at their work, leading to suicide.
Seriously though, didn't know of this app before, but am glad I just found out about it. Bloody brilliant. - avonej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows XP is just a crippled version of 2000 geared towards the average computer-retarded end user. Name me one thing XP can do that 2000 cannot (and hyperthreading does NOT count because if you actually bought a Pentium 4 the joke is on you).
Actually they both suck ass, but it's choose your poison if you want an NT based OS these days, but I'd have to say XP if far, far worse. - oauncensored, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it will remove your xp style start menu and you'll be left with only classic style.
how can you retrieve the xp style if you've done this? - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice app thanks. Saves time when building new XP systems and protecting current ones.
The SafeXP thing seems a demo... since it states "Download the Free Version". - jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too many scary options. I'm afraid of shooting myself in the foot down the road and not remembering how I made something not work, especially when I get a cryptic error message.
- Mushroonaut, on 07/11/2008, -0/+0sounds good for pirate xp!
- stevec5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WTF, the link don't work so I downloaded the file manually but it won't unzip!
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all your XP are belong to us
- wtfunkymonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1^
I question if people that cant change thier menu style should be allowed to run stuff like this in the first place - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"heres a simple rule i always follow and you should too
If you do not know what it does, DO NOT DISSABLE IT"
Or, if you're doing it for educational purposes, don't complain when it breaks something. - doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0right click taskbar> properties >start menu
- teknophile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Awesome ! Shows how great WinXP is ... you need hundreds of other software to make sure that the OS doesn't "leak" too much ! :)
- Jakanden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had already done most of this manually - wish I had found it sooner. Nice find!
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its a lot faster though my windows and its not crashing..... maybe all the illegal themes were doing it....
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2'eh, tools like this are overrated. Windows XP isn't "calling home" and why disable extra services? To save the ram you spent your hard-earned money on? or maybe to reduce Window's functionality so that you can argue that Linux is better? *sigh*
- intelmustdie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Disarm? I wasn't aware IE or Windows Media Player were killing people and blowing crap up."
Windows Media Player hijacked my RAM. - Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow i had all my cool themes and everything for windows and now poof gone....
- Double-Z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this doing anything that the free tools on GRC.com don't do?
- CygnusXII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is why I keep a Virtual Machine of XP tucked away on my drive, VMWare is a wonderful way to test something on, before you go..clicking things away. It's also a great way to sandbox your emails, in case your ultra tinfoil hattish and viri wary. Any thing that I am tinkering with that could be system crashable, gets tested in the virtual machine.
- StatiK69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A definite digg. Its tools like this that make tweaking and securing something a bit easier; now I don't have to do this by hand. Each time I reinstall, running through these by hand, gets a bit tedious "did I forget something?" Old but nice story!
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Nice, no more registry editing for me!
- karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0huh? A windows box connected to the Internet! Scary stuff.
- Lordless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Heh already did all this by hand. Unfortunate.
- doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dumbasses just had to click change everything didnt you?
you should learn to go through and check only what you want to change
heres a simple rule i always follow and you should too
If you do not know what it does, DO NOT DISSABLE IT - idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0kewl thx
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hmm...how do you reset the logon screen?
- doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wow excellent tool, ive done a lot of those by hand but some i forgot how to get rid of
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Back to the original Windows XP logon I meant.
- juggernott, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0sweet. and yes. try reading through stuff jackasses.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"threats"
- Kashey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Great tool.
- FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Diggidy Diggidy Digg All Right!

- TechnoPops, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0From the page:
"Disarm Internet Explorer
Disarm Windows Media Player"
Disarm? I wasn't aware IE or Windows Media Player were killing people and blowing crap up. - zoltan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0lol teknophile'
- thewordwasgod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0danlemire is a ***** idiot.
dont post your ***** site for no reason and then quote yourself and append the ***** site link again - battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"Is this doing anything that the free tools on GRC.com don't do?

http://danlemire.com/ - thewordwasgod, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0"Small tool which disables the default threats of a Windows XP installation. Besides disabling Windows ".....
that sounds better than what this program actually does.
the wording is poor in the description.
should be:
"Small tool which disables the default threats of a Windows XP installation. Besides disabling Windows and some of its components FROM communicatING with Microsoft servers, "...
problem is... when you have a user base of ***** morons, you get lame stories on the front page, as well as stories with descriptions that have been written by 5 year olds. why anyone would digg a story that has blatantly miss-spelled words in it is beyond me.... this one is okay because i'm sure all you diggers were under the impression that this removes xp entirely
(no i don't really care about being strict with the written word- infact i despise capitals and apostrophes for contractions, but when i can not read a description without feeling retarded - something is wrong - if you guys are going to make use of a entirely user based story promotion system - show us that you can actually handle the duty instead of making it clear that you are all mindless *****.) - danlemire, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0
