- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -5/+53I finally actually purchased a legal copy of Windows yesterday. I still feel a little dirty. I found out that when you have to do the Product Activation, you loose a little bit of your soul.
- Niffer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+48Honestly, who didn't see this coming?
- regyt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35I'm surprised it took this long.
The last WGA was cracked in 24h. - digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30It's actually easier (assuming you haven't been updated yet). Just disable the automatic updates. Then disable the Security Center service if that little red icon in the sys tray bothers you.
Or - and I'm going out on a limb here, bear with me, BUY a license for your software - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28Digg - Your source for illegal software?
It's all okay as long as you're screwing "m$", right? Sigh. - ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Really, Microsoft's intention isn't to waste their time making WGA very hard to crack. They only want to make sure that people who don't know they're using pirated copies of Windows become aware of it. Their main goal isn't to stop a person that is pirating Windows on purpose. They want to stop mass piraters who sell computers with pirated copies of Windows.
If they really wanted to, they could make the WGA system much more foolproof. I think they also realize it'll be almost impossible to make their software uncrackable without having some kind of hardware chip assisting the protection. - T0PS3O, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Yes but... From the blog:

- Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19The article is on the blog, therefore, not blogspam
- DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Sucks huh? Stuff like that and DRM have effectively reversed the meaning of "you get what you pay for."
- revmoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Here's a question then, since I DID pay for my license of windows XP.
Why am I hounded every 5 minutes to run a certain automatic update for "Windows malicious software removal tool", even though I have opted to not install it as well as clicked the box "Don't ask me again to install this update"
I even tried declining the EULA on the update, it still reappears in my tray less than 5 minutes later prompting me to install the update. Does that make sense? Microsoft is essentially forcing me to agree to their EULA, if I don't agree then I'm forced to live with it constantly appearing in my system tray.
I tried calling Microsoft about the issue, but after waiting on hold for 20 minutes or so I gave up(Even though the first guy I spoke to assured me that I was the first in line when he transferred me).
Someone needs to make a fuss about this issue. I'm not happy, and I'm sure I'm not the only person experiencing this crap. - drigz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I've had to do that crap so many times, I must have none left...
Does it take more when you have to do the 'type a bunch of numbers into phone, find out it failed, read a bunch of numbers to an operator, type in a bunch of numbers, beat head against wall when you find out you made a typo' cycle? - method3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11There's been increased efforts on Microsoft's part to get people with pirated copies of windows to buy official versions. Just as easily people have been saying "uh, no" and "fixing" it. I actually do have a real version of Tablet Edition XP, except that the pre-installed software is a huge hassle. There's no way to get around that since Toshiba's only backup for the os is to re-image the drive with all their stuff pre-installed, you can't install XP clean.
- pion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Good luck with using regedit grandma
- digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You can selectively install the updates afterwords
- seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I still have all of my soul then >:)
- thebeaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Are you using the corporate edition of pro? If you still have a valid key from some unsuspecting company, there's no activation and no way to tell that you have a non-Genuine copy.
- colebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14[gasp]!!!
[begin sarcasm] how dare you suggest such a horrible idea as paying for what you use!!! [end sarcasm] - palakt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Since your Xp is not genuine, Microsoft has just dispatched an army of commandos to take you down!
- JeffreyAtW, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9More like, a day or two. These "non-genuine" messages haven't been popping up for 5 years.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Dont download it?
- drwtsn32, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10If you want to use their software, you buy it. Don't try to justify stealing by saying "it's not worth the price they are asking." People like you wouldn't pay for it even if it cost $20. pathetic.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Yeah that's great. Considering you can't buy OSX for a PC.
Idiot - raitchison, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7That's precisely why they aren't being more heavy handed, they would rather have people steal Windows than run Linux for free. In either case they get no money but with the pritaed windows at least they maintain market share.
It would be easy for Microsoft to tweak WGA to have it shut down or disabled machines running priated Windows (remember XP SP1) but they know that a lot of those users will just use Linux. - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Woah.. yeah.. a company trying to get people to legally pay for the product they developed... crazy!!!!
- BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have Toshiba M200 tablet PC. I did a clean install of the OS by using a USB enclosure to format the drive and get rid of the recovery partition using a desktop machine. It's quite easy. If you need help, I'll walk you through the process.
- JimV, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I don't know where the "xp costs several hundred dollars" comes from.
You can get XP Pro for about $150: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16837102062
And XP Home for about $85: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16837102059 - sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can't use regular XP keys on a corporate edition. How the heck are you supposed to find a non corporate edition of XP if it didn't come with your computer? There isn't one easily found on the pirate bay.
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I find it ironic that I upgraded yesterday and have yet to see that warning. My xp is not genuine. I'm guessing that more legitimate xp users are getting this warning than the pirated versions.
- raitchison, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This isn't designed to interfere with willful pirates (at least at this stage) but it's more for grandma or whoever who doesn't know they are pirating.
- ToastedDoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@CosmicJustice:
First off, I pay for my software and my music. Having said that:
Why is disabling this crippling WGA akin to stealing? If I paid for my copy of Windows XP (which I did) and I circumvented the product activation (because as noted above, product activation removes a part of ones soul), does that make me a thief?
Along the same lines, if I want to protect my legal $50 copy of the Extended Edition of LOTR by making backup copies, and I circumvented the DVD protections to do it, does that make me a thief?
Overall, I'm finding that people are throwing around words like 'theft' and 'stealing' when there seems to be any kind of copyright violation. Is that an effort to make me feel bad that I don't play by the industry rules (even though I paid for it my legal copies)? It seems to me that 'theft & stealing' are moral concepts that are mutually exclusive of committing copyright violations. I would call it what it is, a copyright violation.
To those who disagree with me, here is a situation where I will readily [and respectfully] change my mind: show me evidence where someone was prosecuted for 'theft' (petty or not) for illegally copying or modifying software, instead of 'copyright violations' and I will yield.
Tone of voice: respectful, concerned. - ianam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Too bad for grandma if she doesn't know she's pirating. Ignorance is no defense."
It is, actually, as there's a legal notion called "intent". But don't the let facts get in your way. - agimat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8"Also on a side note, I've never paid for any of the XPs I've installed on friends/family's computers nor my own.."
So proud.. I guess that makes you, your friends and family a bunch of thieves then. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+4So people can pay $89 for a game (RRP of most new games in Australia), that will last a few weeks, maybe months at tops, but can't pay for an operating system that can and will last 5 plus years? I can tell you it feels good to be licensed, we have about 3 XP licenses in this house. I'm not saying piracy is bad, I'm just saying don't get all upset because Microsoft want you to pay for something you stole. While I do digg this, I don't think the whinging comments are neccesary. Be happy that there is a work around for something you don't even own. And for those who are crying that Microsoft is infecting you with spy-ware, puh-lease! You don't have a leg to stand on if you didn't even buy the thing!
And as someone mentioned before, they are not targeting people who WILLINGINLY pirate software, they are targeting those who purchased software under the impression it was LEGITIMATE. This is busting down on those dodgy "companies" selling pirated software at retail prices. They deserve to be hunted down. You should be HAPPY they are being exposed! Selling warez is like selling your soul!
Let's see how quick this gets modded down. It's the truth though! - valan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think their goal is to just add more and more protections gradually to prepare us for the impending lockdown of Vista, so all the crazy security features (palladium?) just don't seem quite as ridiculous.
- NOFXY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I bought a computer with a pre-installed version of XP home. Problem is, it didn't come with the CD. It had the "restore" disks that i had to burn myself (which BTW failed on the 2nd CD so i have no way to restore my computer because it only allows you to burn a restore disk once).
Here's the question:
so am i entitled to a free Windows XP home CD from Microsoft or eMachines for that screw up?
In the mean time, I've solved the problem by downloading a (obviously pirated) copy of XP pro SP2, just in case
If this seems off topic go ahead and mod me down. - bjohnsonwsu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9There is, of course, a few other ways of getting around the warning message:
* Buy the software you use.
* Don't use the software you don't want to buy.
Pretty crazy, I know, but I've been using these methods for years and I haven't been caught and had excellent results. - MattH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Has anyone tried to get their copy of Windows re-validated after upgrading components in their PC its a nightmare and you have to jump though several of Microsoft's "Hoops " to get a new key its far easier to run the Windows Product Activation Patch and then the WGA patch and be done with it .
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Too bad for grandma if she doesn't know she's pirating. Ignorance is no defense.
- ianam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"My dad gets XP corp edition from his office. No activation or WGA :-)"
You can get $36,000 for turning him in. - YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Thing is. I DID buy XP. Problem is, updates kept hosing my install, then the computer crashed w/ my recovery partition (thanks alot you cheap OEM bastards!).
- Jetfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Luckly I have parts of my soul in Horcruxes, so M$ won't get them all.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can still use the product key from that install, which is **more** legal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is merely the beginning. Microsoft is just softening everyone up for Vista. I am sitting here on a MacBook Pro with a Windows partition, I paid for this version of Windows for one of my desktops last year. The license key didn't work for my MacBook Pro install, said it was invalid. Is it wrong for me to have cracked it? Should I really have gone and bought a second license? It just doesn't feel right that I would have to do that, it is like having to get a second drivers license for your second car.
- nnonix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4For every person who will spend the time it takes to get around WGA, there are 20 who will just buy a legal copy.
- MattH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Windows Genuine Advantage Fix 1.4.

Windows Genuine Advantage Fix 1.4
=================================
Now the version problem is fixed - it should take a while until
LegitCheckControl.DLL Version 9.3.265 comes out.
Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/offers
to test/get more info about that
Close your internet explorer and start 'Windows Genuine Advantage Fix.exe'
it will extract c:WINDOWSSYSTEM32LegitCheckControl.dll
that's all.
Alternativ workaround:
1. In Internetoption/security
set 'Execute ActiveX controls & Plugins' to
'Ask me each time'
2. Go to Windows Genuine Advantage page and
select no if you are ask to install or run an ActiveX control
-> you will get to the 'Install Windows Genuine Advantage'-page
3. Now enter the line below into the Browser's URL-adress:
javascript:document.genuineForm.submit();
...and you should get around the 'Windows Genuine Advantage' Validation.
check if the url is
...microsoft.com/genuine/offers/Details.aspx...
because the workaround refers to the following java code at this page:
if (LegitCheckOnLoad("?display...) == 0)
{^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ - drwiii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Here's a better layout of my workaround (which they copy/pasted into the link above)
http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=184139&cid=15207000 - NJMtwtd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Ehh, some of you people take this too seriously.
If you paid for a legit copy, good for you.
If you haven't, digg this. - supes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can call eMachine and order a new disc, it costs like $10.00 - $20.00 for the replacement disc.
- drwtsn32, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Gee.. that's really smart. Who needs security updates?
