Whatever You Do, Don't Accept Invites From Quechup - Here's Why
boingboing.net — While you were Burning / vacationing / spacing out offline this Labor Day weekend, many folks online were hit with invitations from a social networking service called Quechup that violates your address book, and abuses user trust by spamming all your contacts.

- webcure, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29Hi!
I was just about to ask you if you would like an invite to the hot new social media site called Quechup.
I guess this means no? - cemeterygates, on 10/10/2007, -2/+62Oh man, I got raped. I feel like such a n00b. There's nothing like reminding hundreds of people you don't particularly want to talk to again that you exist.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24That's what happens whenever I sign into Messenger.
- ducs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Then knock them off your contact list and block them.
- barristerb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0I got nailed by it too. I'm still feeling the repercussions of last week. I'm angry at myself but angrier at this worthless company.
That attorney is gonna get a nasty call from me Monday morning.- bingobongony, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1For what? They did nothing illegal.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24That's what happens whenever I sign into Messenger.
- andysep47, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17spammers must DIE
- suxmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+42I never accept invites from sites I won't remember how to spell.
- imabot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+45sadly, the other 90% of the myspace/yourspace/thisbook/thatbook/ebo/wodo/dodu social networking crazed zombies will happily accept the invite.
- Ridikul, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Well, that's the good news.
- egroeggnik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Are you stupid? Can you imagine your inbox crammed with these invites after 90% of the internet population joins?
We'll all be screwed!- b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1set up a filter :) I have one that sends any email with "* has tagged you! :)* straight to spam. ***** tagworld. Or whatever it was called. I got like three of those emails a day.
Never did find out what exactly it meant when someone tagged you...
- b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1set up a filter :) I have one that sends any email with "* has tagged you! :)* straight to spam. ***** tagworld. Or whatever it was called. I got like three of those emails a day.

- Ridikul, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Well, that's the good news.
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Its amazing how ***** tone deaf some of these guys are about how to treat their customers.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3it's amazing that people expect Corporations, which cannot actually have emotions like compassion, to actually care about you. In the end, all you are is a walking wallet that they're trying to wring dry.
- bingobongony, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Every story is not about Apple you know!
- rejoined, on 10/10/2007, -15/+4What the ***** is Quechup? Never heard of it and don't care.
Really, this shoudn't get Dugg up. There're plenty of good articles on Boingboing which can be on Digg, and not this crap about some new, sucky, viral social networking site spamming your inbox. I get spam invites like this atleast once on a weekly basis, if not daily, and all I do is mark it as spam and delete it. And most Digg users are intelligent enough to do the same or if not better. End of story.- mstoneburner, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13What are you, some sort of Cory Doctorow fanboi? ***** Boingboing and ***** you.
- JanYpe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Since when are most of Digg's users intelligent?
- pak314, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Lucky for me I don't have a social network to worry about.
- mikefitz2, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1gee i wish i were as cool as you.
- mikefitz2, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1I SAID GEE I WISH I WERE AS ***** COOL AS YOU PAK314
- erric, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Seriously, is this news? Boing Boing is really scraping the bottom of the RSS barrel. If you're giving a third party your login information to your e-mail account, what do you expect? Beebo and it's ilk does exactly the same thing.
- ultrafez, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1No, Bebo doesn't do what was mentioned in the article. The article says (if you actually read it) that Quechup sends emails AUTOMATICALLY from your email account inviting your contact list to join - not many other social networking sites do this (and that includes Bebo). Please RTFA and be better informed before making yourself look stupid.
- Beatmiser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Don't social networking whores have more than enough choices as it is?
- darkane, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Sadly, there are a lot of websites that do this, such as Flixster. Some of them are more devious than others, making you think that you're essentially logging directly into your e-mail account, when in fact you're just providing your login information directly to the website.
Plaxo provides a managed service that does this in a more responsible way, but the whole thing still seems shady to me. - shadam, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Damnit! i was just about to launch my Quechup clone, μstard.
- mandarin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Lustard?
- darkfarmer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Mewstard?
- anagoge, on 10/10/2007, -3/+64Digg me up if you've never even ***** heard of Quechup before this made it to the front page.
- cdavis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22 minutes before I read this I got an invite. I deleted it because I've never heard of the service or the person who was 'inviting me'. Now seeing this, am I glad I didn't click any of the links in the email.
- devo6273, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Well this is what you get for signing up for condiment related social networking... On an unrelated note I am going to go start a site called mus 'Tard. Kindly enter your SSN for safety reasons please.
- riverstyx, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0I dont use social networking sites anymore.
- Gutterpunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1With insightfull posts like this one, it might be a good thing too.
- squaat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5How is this different from facebook which asks for your email account details and sends out annoying invites? Not that I'm condoning it, I hate the practice and I'm actually quite amazed at how many people I know gave up their email passwords for social networking sites.
- Gutterpunk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4'cause Facebook ask for your permission?
- NobleArc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Why do the sites with awesomely clever names always screw you over? =/
- CanceledCzech, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Quechup? How is that awesomely clever? It just sounds ***** stupid.
- turrican, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Especially because the "Qu" means it's pronounced "Kwetchup" and not "Ketchup".
- mandarin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Like Woot?
- CanceledCzech, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Quechup? How is that awesomely clever? It just sounds ***** stupid.
- noevadeaux, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Plaxo? Responsible? The only way I ever thought those two words would be used together would be in a lawsuit - like "Plaxo is responsible for the propagation of viruses, spam, spy ware and other yet to be determined detriments to the Internet." But then, there are so many, sorry to focus on just Plaxo. I do give them kudos for spelling out their intentions in the EULA. Sadly, many of my customers didn't really read it.
- cquilliam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've gotten to the point with email spam from friends that I reply to them stating that if they fill my email address out on any other websites, i'm going to start giving their phone number away on the street to random people. In my opinion, there's no difference.
After a couple of spams, they get blocked.- Circuitsoft, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Forgive them for Quechup. They put their own email address in, not yours.
- Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Isn't "quechup" the Ute indian word for feces?
