- Wrathernaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That's likely just a screen they throw up there to look pretty for the cameras for when the press rolls in. We do the same thing when we get VIPs without clearances here (Iraq) and don't want an empty 20'x40' wall of screens while they shake everybody's hands.
- cromo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why shouldn't they use it. Nmap is maybe the best tool in it's area. The question is ... How much have they spent in software?
- edhm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3anyone read the caption of the story photo?
Lt. Gen. Keith B. Alexander, director of the National Security Agency, and William Marshall, another NSA official, give President Bush a tour of the super-secret agency's headquarters in Fort Meade, Md.
Its SUPER-SECRET! - rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The NSA location has been out there for a while. While the NSA used to never even claim existence, it's pretty hard to cover up now, since the agency is so huge. They've even got a website set up (although it's mostly FAQs and employment info).
Their campus is pretty insane - I drove by it today on the way to work. It's all fenced in, with huge boulders making crashing the gate impossible. And they've got plenty of security - there's always a few cop cars - with their lights on - just hanging out on the street. Aside from a heavy county/state police presence, there are military police patrolling (and you can't go to court if you get a speeding ticket from them). Additionally, my friend got a DUI there once by a Dept. of Homeland Security guy (I was in the car - good times). And if you manage to get past the county police, state police, MPs, DHS agents, the NSA has it's own security force that patrols inside the gates. - sparty1969, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"give President Bush a tour of the super-secret agency's headquarters".
well at least they didn't disclose the location. That would just help the terrorists.
“in Fort Meade, Md”

what do you guys get on the "Are you cracked?" thingy - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The NSA doesn't have magical powers. That screen was indeed put up to hide their proprietary software, but that doesn't mean they can unencrypt or even find useful info without using the same techniques everyone else does--only on a much larger scale.
The NSA has to sift through an amount of data that is impossible to analyze for any computer on Earth. The NSA has to selectively examine data that is deemed suspect or important. Not only must they find the data, but they must decrypt, password crack, and decode/analyze whatever the data was if it is well protected. Much of this isn't even in English, nor is it sent via traditional means that are easily identified.
You think a pro terrorist or criminal sends his plans using Hotmail? Actually, they probably do, and the NSA wouldn't even notice anything suspicious. Al Qaeda used to exchange info through soccer chat rooms, no one noticed that until captured terrorists revealed it. How many Arabic-speaking agents does the NSA have to sift through chat room logs? Now, how about the steganographically encoded images and videos the terrorists have been using? How does the NSA locate those?
The NSA is powerless to track professional terrorists and criminals who are intent on secret communication. The NSA is an ineffectual, tax revenue-wasting nuisance on the internet. They're like the internet hall monitors. Their domestic spying programs should be completely shut down, we could use that funding for better things.
The NSA isn't going to stop terrorism, they're not even going to stop a single incident. If need be, the terrorists can meet in a Mosque and plan an attack face to face. Meanwhile, the NSA will just continue harassing innocent civilians, making it look like it's doing something productive. - devwal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Considering these are the main tools that people they would classify as 'cyber terrorists' use, then why wouldn't they keep track on new versions of kismet, nmap, cain and abel, etc? If you want to be effective against "cyber-terror" (I feel really wierd saying that phrase, but I digress:) then you need to know the most current weapons at their disposal. Nowhere does it say "The tools the NSA uses exclusively for their investigations into cyber-terror" but there will always be you kooky conspiracy theorists. Finally, Do you think the NSA is that stupid? That is one question I definitely don't know the answer to, though. Digg anyway -- good eye.
- mixpix405, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol
welcome to the discussion, mr. paranoid - StacyWebb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does this mean if we run it on our screens we can get federal funding from the Patriot Act?
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NVM, I see "Nmap" on that "radar" page.
- Skywise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure they use DShield. But I'm also sure that it was a "public" photo shoot and they weren't about to show any secret software displays. So just put up the DShield display which "looks" cool. If you've ever watched "Mail Call" on the history channel, they went into a few top secret information centers, but ALL of the displays the camera could see were shut off during filming.
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well I guess they know of Bittorrent, if only by name. I pity the trackers who still think it's a deep dark secret to the guvmint.
"Holy Crap! they even use Nmap!"
Link? I don't see Nmap, front-end or command-line, on the article photo.
"Lt. Gen. Keith B. Alexander, director of the National Security Agency, and William Marshall, another NSA official, give President Bush a tour of the super-secret agency's headquarters in Fort Meade, Md.

But it's super effective! ;) - BrandonAbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with a few others that it's just being used as a bling screen for public consumption.
- CharlieInCO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Congratulations, guys. You've just discovered that if you're giving the press a tour of your secret installation, you show them unclassified tools.
- mtmitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg
It looks cool on my screen and makes my co-workers wonder what the hell I'm doing. - teddziuba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0staged for publicity. no digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kudos to OBKenobi for the best comment on this page.
Like he says, if you think about the seriously huge amount of data flying around, if you have two terrorists exchange one dodgy jpg with some hidden data inside, what would make this get flagged?
The odds are just too small. Or what if they meet on some random chatroom and speak using code words only they know:
example: The camel has flown the nest, repeat, the camel has flown the nest.
If an NSA guy sees that or anyone sees that, they won't know what the hell it means.
I guess the major benefit to anything the NSA does it purely to try and see if there is a build up in "chatter" that might indicate an attack is iminent. Trying to stop a specific attack purely using the internet seems infeasible to me. - ripcrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ha! They are watching Ethereal versions. A buddy of mine from my Linux User Group is the programmer for Ethereal and works in Kansas City. Gerald, you're famous! ...er, being watched by the NSA. Holy Crap!!!
- webranding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed it is an interesting digg ... but ...
A few years ago my father retired from the Air Force after 30+ years. Top secret level. Still really don't know what he did. We were invited to a photo shot at TRANSCOM headquartered at Scott Air Force base. The home of the "Big Board." With an escort we could get into public areas. Those that were not public were clear because of the guys with M-16s. Cameras were out of the question.
In a conference room as an Air Force employee took pictures of my dad getting a couple of awards we my mom and I were even instructed to take off our badges so no photo images of them were produced.
As many others have said, of course NSA is not going to have "their" actual programs up on a screen w/ cameras in the room.
BTW: NSA employees more Ph.Ds and has more computing power then any other organization/company in the world. I think we can bet they're running some pretty neat things.
If you're interested in NSA check our Puzzle Palace (somewhat dated) or State of War. Both good reads. - Dewars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They put that up as a backdrop for the photo. You think they would allow picture s to be taken of somthing "super-secret". No digg for a manufactured photo-op or possible Photoshop.

My IP doesn't show up in it, but the tor exit nodes are f'ked, this one appears just under 500 times (1 under currently)... I couldn't access dnsstuff.com using tor yesterday..
Anyway, digg since that site is moderatly usefull..

... Crap! - barthosch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2LMAO. They quickly popped up a security related website to display on the huge LCD wall for Mr. Bush's visit. Usually they watch p0rn there of course. They also could have used a Matrix screensaver.. Guess they use startrek.com or starfield screensaver at NASA. That's where all the taxes go: huge LCD walls (and pr0n).
dugg! - grayBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HOLY *****....http://securitywizardry.com/wireless.htm http://securitywizardry.com/bluetooth.htm
they have a blue tooth gun...!!!
are terrorists using bluetooth that much ahahahahah....
best digg ever. - iammike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0interesting. I found the priceless knockoff thing a little snarky, considering a lot of people working there probably do contribute as volunteers to the dshield database i'd bet, otherwise why would they think of it? Also. an above comment had it right .. whats up there is "just for the press". Though i bet they use it along with a bunch of other tools
- aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1looks like everyone needs to block the governments IP range, freakin losers.
- dlichteman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1LOL!!!

- Hortnon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@theantidote: That's basically what I meant, but I guess I worded it poorly :P
I forgot to mention, that it is very likely that they use that software. The key is, that it's not the only thing they rely on. - mayostard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Guys, you don't honestly believe they use this ***** do you? You think they're going to display proprietary software while journalists and photographers walk through and snap pictures? IT'S THE ***** NSA!!!
- wstrinz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great link, consider it dugg.

Nice catch, even if it is "just for the press" (which I'm sure it is).

- buddyfarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good, I haven't been attacking them either...or so they think.....moowaahhhaahahahaha!!!
uh, just kidding guys in black.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wouldnt this let the terrorists know the tools we use?
someone needs to arrest Evan Vucci for leaking vital nation security
who would have thunk they might use nmap - swisswuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's really hard to come up with more than about 1 "authentic" looking image in 1 - 2 years. So you can't be upset if someone recycled the "imagery" wih the country and pie charts. And furthermore: why should things have changed since "Our Man in Havana" by Graham Greene anyway? He had such a hard time with them vacuum cleaners.
- grayBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to the naysayers.... this seems like a big ***** up to me...
the old foggies in washington would never think a geek would search around the internet to match up the interface in that picture.... yea the particular picture doesnt really give any information... but it does tell you waht company this NSA is obviously relying heavily on.... thats a big big no no... you can look around thier website and get a really good picture of the type of technology they are working with ....
even we are only seeing the "unclassified tech" is still alot of information that you certainly would want any terrorists to see - geminus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nope, this is dog and pony show for the press. Albeit, the govt does use open source software from time to time, but a lot of their security stuff (GOTS) is kept pretty hush hush. I don't think they're just going to let the press take a picture of a SIPR screen.
- d03boy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0those big ass graphs and stuff are only there to try and impress the president... come on... we all know there are just a bunch of kids sitting behind computer screens
- madcat87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is just for the public. They use their own secret software.
- DrAtomicus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And we call this, Mr. Radar! Coffee?"
"Of course I want coffee! I always drink coffee when I watch radar! You know that! Everyone knows that!" - ronintetsuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If the NSA can use it to wow the taxpaying public, surely I can leave it up while I'm gone and use it to wow my roommates.
