- DullesGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's BS. Verizon and other companies just don't want other people getting their service for free. I'm sure this was all the work of lobbyists.
- Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lmao stupid people secure or not all jor wifi access belong to me
- mindspace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unsecured wi-fi...
Stupid? Definitely
Illegal? No
Education is the key here. If you're sharing your friends wi-fi, he can share his WEP key with you if he so chooses or even set his router to only allow known addresses. - buckdog05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1News flash:
If someone want's to hack your "confidential data," chances are that they can also crack the wireless security. - KenAycock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My immediate thought was the same as rhall's. Locking the door is your own responsibility, so there must be some pressure from the ISP's.
- rhall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree that this is BS. There is no law that states that business have to lock their doors but they do. Same should apply to wi-fi. If companies are worried about getting their confidential data stolen, encrypt it but its not going to do any good, it can be cracked to easily.
- znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ what mindspace said..
- flump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@NerveBand: your friend sets up encryption... and gives you his encryption key so you'll still be able to connect.
- Polymira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Buisness or home office ... says nothing about grandma's personal wifi...
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uhg... freaking fantastic. Now I'm going to get a bunch of freaking yuppies calling tech support "QUICKLY I HAVE TO SECURE MY WIRELESS OR I GO TO JAIL!" When will everyone figure out WEP is about as protective as a wet napkin?
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hell some people don't even know how to use/set up wep!
So what, are they going to have people training others on how to use WEP or other methods of security? - d0gbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0New York. Oh how I love my fubar state.
- Nerys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I sent off an e-mail to the gov there and I actually got a responce and an apparently open minded one !! I read the law and explained the problem (goto there website to read the law)
I said I would modify the first part of the law (that part contains the problem to this
"A Local Law amending the Laws of Westchester County requiring any buisness or for profit entity offering or utilizing public Internet access on the same network as any containers of personal information to have a secure network to protect the stored information from potential identity theft and other risks related to computer use and to notify all users of any open network that the information sent over the network is NOT guaranteed to be secure or safe."
This rewrite would PROVIDE the desire with no trace of the result we DONT desire :-)
the law is so vaguely written that it would include ANY internet user dialup router wifi celluar all of them.
will let you know what responce I get from this.

- NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Omfg that is so *****. See I use dialup so that really isn't fair. If I want to hook on my friend's connection for free, that is so messed up. I like to use a wireless connection cause its faster but still not pay so my friend lets me connect for free. If its outlawed, then thats just gay.
