- Igrift, on 03/06/2009, -3/+24Just another scare tactic.
- inc595, on 03/06/2009, -5/+24weak article with no substance. buried.
The nation's defense shouldn't even be physically plugged into the public internet. - FLMarijuana, on 03/06/2009, -4/+14I can see where this is going: "We are being attacked in cyberspace, therefore we have to take control of the internet".
- divinediva, on 03/06/2009, -3/+11China is actively conducting cyber espionage as a warfare and as an important target of its asymmetric capability.
- trythison4sighs, on 03/07/2009, -0/+7When dealing with "cyber-war" or "cyber-terrorism" we aren't specifically talking about hacking the pentagon. Reagan successfully used subversive tactics through Radio Free America being broadcast into the USSR and we even had "criminals" in the Soviet Union. These criminals were CIA operatives that flooded the black market with various banned and short supplied items. More importantly though they flooded the communist nation with counterfeited rubles. Why is this important? Because more and more we are finding new and better ways to screw with our enemies. We are finding new ways to exploit weaknesses and one of those ways is the manipulations through credit fraud. Think of it. If you want to manipulate a system you can commit identity theft, create new credit cards and then use that money to buy what you need or buy politicians... We are a creative and crafty species... And if you really want something you'll find a way to get it.

Dugg for the WOPR!!! - AmyVernon, on 03/06/2009, -2/+5Don't you watch 24? The US security infrastructure is all online and controlled by one program that's easily broken into by 3rd world juntas with the backing of John Voight! We're all at risk!

- inactive, on 03/07/2009, -0/+3"(Hint: it isn't you)."
I meant to say, you aren't the target, but you are certainly financing the cyber-war against your governments via hacking and identity theft. A cyber-war partially funded through write offs that take place in the target country's economic zone? 2. ???? 3. Profit. - motters, on 03/07/2009, -0/+2Is this the "electronic pearl harbor" they were talking about in 1998 ??
- spaarkplug, on 03/07/2009, -0/+2Awesome. Now next they want to the bomb the internet? ( i wonder how they plan on doing that) and take people freedom for information away and pay the government, microsoft, google and God knows who's watching to go online. nice scare tactic.
- ecko1977, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2Guys calm down this is not a scare tactic and we are not trying to take over your internet. I work in Air Force communications, Cyber Command makes policy and is supposed to be taking over as the centralized leadership for all Air Force comm. This is great for us because it means when a full-bird Colonel wing commander thinks that ... port should be wide open so his ... works properly, we can deny him and tell him to talk to our 2-star if he has a problem with it.
- 123scottbot, on 03/07/2009, -1/+3Isn't the United States the one that asymmetrically overpowers everyone else? i don't see anyone else using remotely piloted aircraft to bomb people halfway around the world. Yet somehow, we are the ones who are supposed to be afraid.
- jcc6655, on 03/07/2009, -1/+2agreed. it's really lacking substance
- Skab, on 03/07/2009, -2/+3translation for the whole article - The ChAir Force has discovered proxy's.
- inactive, on 03/07/2009, -1/+2My thoughts exactly (although I didn't want to say it for spoilers' sake).
They are totally in our CIP chips killing our doods. - joeljR, on 03/06/2009, -3/+4Yeah, it smacks of paranoia.
- IHopeHeFails, on 03/07/2009, -2/+3That was a ridiculously short and useless article. Asymmetric warfare is not just cyber war.
- Skab, on 03/07/2009, -3/+4As someone who works on this Navy side, yes this is true, and the Air Force has no cyber defense ops area at all. But on what I can say is it's a lot less glamorous than what tv, movies and this article would like you to think. It's a job 9-5 on their (bad guys whoever) side as well. Plain and simple. Further more our biggest security threat is our own peoples idiocy before we think about those who try to compromise our systems.
- inactive, on 03/07/2009, -1/+2Sensationalism? In MY media? It's more likely than you think.
- JonForTheWin, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1"Further more our biggest security threat is our own peoples idiocy"
Like windows running on all the pentagon desktops - FelixdaaHack, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1substance = classified
- ethana2, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1Mouse trap! I wanted to play mouse trap. You roll your dice, you move your mice.
Nobody gets hurt. - trythison4sighs, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1No. But it does include cyber warfare. I think that they were just using a popularized aspect like "cyber" to draw attention to what's really going on.
- inactive, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1Sure, just join this site.

Lol. - forceuser, on 03/07/2009, -2/+2I call tank.
- IHopeHeFails, on 03/07/2009, -0/+0True enough. Still a poorly written article. I expected more. I suppose the civilian population isn't really interested in what asymmetric warfare actually looks like on the battlefield. We haven't really had a symmetric war since WWII. Since that's overseas it doesn't affect most of the population. Cyber warfare though is something they can grasp and something that will affect us here.
On the other hand, mentioning the fact that economic attacks are also a home front possibility in asymmetric warfare might be a good idea. Especially as concerns China. - yocouchdigga, on 03/06/2009, -4/+4Some people will view this as a scare tactic but from a strategic/militaristic standpoint we have to keep up with the joneses, it's an unfortunate reality of the ***** up world we live in.
- DirtyVicar, on 03/07/2009, -2/+2Call the production floor! The boss needs more wank words like "asymmetric"!
- Ryan1249, on 03/09/2009, -0/+0The air force has been been talking about this for at least 15 years. I recall a conference at the Air Force Academy about this many years ago. Not news but certainly real.
- newsound6, on 03/07/2009, -3/+3Pew.. Pew! Pew Pew!
- inactive, on 03/07/2009, -3/+2It a warzone 3/4 of the time on Digg, internet wars isnt something new...FIRE IN THE TUBES!
- JasonCox, on 03/07/2009, -4/+2Can I be a 5-star cyber-general then?
- inactive, on 03/06/2009, -7/+5DUH, I'm pretty sure it aint. =)
Defense of systems is a broader issue than assaults on military hardware and software. They have an obligation to defend the public portion of the network that resides in the US.
China and Russia are actively conducting cyber espionage as a warfare and as an important target of its asymmetric capability. This is occurring on all levels, public, private and corporate.
(Hint: it isn't you).
That said, its highly unlikely anyone is going to die as a direct result of asymmetric cyber warfare, but some people are sure going to lose a lot of money as these types of attacks increase in frequency and complexity.
How much North American R&D has been stolen already? - inactive, on 03/07/2009, -7/+4This article isn't just BS... try this search:
