---> - sagenumen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Most of these (and by 'most,' I basically mean 'all') are not something that 'Joe Sixpack' CAN address. Today's consumer-grade routers don't offer most of these features as simple "click here to activate"-type things and as for the other stuff, the average user wouldn't even know where to begin. "Secure" to the average person is changing the default password.
- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The article is stupid and pointless, but so is your comment.
Do you know the difference between a LAN and a WAN? He's not saying you need to not use the WAN, he's saying that on the LAN, you should use a separate VLAN. That is correct. Only an idiot would not use that.
The article is garbage though. If you don't know what you're doing, you shouldn't put an IPT network together. It's not like setting up a Windows server - it's actually difficult and should be left to people who know what they're doing. If you know what you're doing, you already know these things. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3*****!!!!
- tomzer1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ridiculous and stupid article. Their basic advice is don't put your Voice Over Internet Protocol system on the Internet, and you'll be safe. Bah. Most people can't implement this stuff anyway. As folks have mentioned, this is for large VoIP administrators and businesses, but even then most of the advice is impractical.
- blinkfink182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After reading this, its more geared towards business-class administrators that actually have this type of equipment, not Vonage (or any other service) home users. Completely agree that Joe Sixpack won't know how to implement VLAN's or know how to make a redundant server (if they even have a dedicated VoIP server), but I also think its not really necessary to do all the things on this list for a home user.
- shirtninjay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Geez, you're an idiot and a liar.
- munozm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a CCIE that implements voip networks, among other things. The fundamental talking points aren't bad but the one vlan comment had me laughing.
- greenink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Written by someone who has obviously never designed/implemented an IPT system in their life. Inaccurate, misleading, rubbish, buried!
The first point is ridiculous. "Restrict all VoIP data to one Virtual Local Area Network". Duhhh, the whole POINT of multi-site IPT is to use the WAN to carry voice as data, so you HAVE to route it off the local voice vlan by definition!
They cant even differentiate correctly between IPSec Tunneling and IPSec Transport!
- kent1146, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Absolutely correct! The article is totally ridiculous!
(in Comic Book Guy voice) Worst.... article... ever...
[/sarcasm] - PPoff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Having used Vonage pretty frequently, I think that alot of the security concerns raised in this article are pretty valid. And without addressing these problems I really can't see a situation in which "joe six pack" is going to be willing to face these hacking threats as a substitute for good ole fashioned land lines.
