- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is a fairly stupid/innocuous story, but think about the implications being made by the media. "Sometimes a worm can do good." "Vigilantism is a good thing when it comes to pedophiles." "Anyone who sees child porn on the Internet is a pedophile." Taken all together, this is some scary *****, considering that everyone with even the slightest semblance of an Internet addiction has seen child porn, bestiality, shemales, girls pissing on each other, and so forth. You can't avoid the *****.
Worse still, depending on how the prosecutor defines child porn, you could be charged for pictures of small-breasted "teens" from Saphic Erotica (expert witnesses often determine age based on breast development) or Japanese girls in gothic lolita cosplay ("pretend" child porn is just as illegal as real child porn). Just imagine if some "expert witness" said that pictures on your hard drive make you a dangerous pervert. What do you say to something like that?
Bear in mind that religious nuts, extreme social conservatives, extreme liberals, and any other type of nut that exists in our society can and will become a prosecutor. The system is full of racists, idiots, and loonies. That's why getting arrested is so dangerous, because getting arrested means you could be ***** no matter what happened/happens. So for the media to encourage electronic vigilantism to combat the ever-present pedophile threat is ***** scary. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@VanillaBaron
That's a good point about lumping together child porn with shemale and piss porn. I had just meant that people see fetish porn online, which they did not necessarily want to see.
This is a great thread, considering the topic. Anti-pedophile hysteria seems to grow out of the nexus between "sex" and "the children". What could be worse? "Deviant sex" and "the children". It's like the synergistic effect of mixing drugs and alcohol, when it comes to freaking people out and passing insane laws.
I'm uncomfortable with the ban on "pretend" child pornography. Think about this. How do you know whether Japanese actors (or actors speaking any language you don't understand) are pretending to be children or not? What if the woman is pretending to be twelve years old, but she has D-cup breasts? There was a great "dramatization" at the beginning of Brass Eye's special on pedophilia, which did just that.
Now, if someone actually DOES have sex with children, of course they need to go away. The way the hysteria works, though, is like a witch hunt. Law enforcement and media look for "signs" of pedophilia. So-called pedophiles are locked up without ever having touched a child.

Now, I don't know the case, but it does appear that this guy was a pervert. It's an extreme case--not quite the same as a college kid surfing weird hentai sites. But still. 1,000 years? For "supporting the child porn industry" and supposedly "encouraging" child abuse? For *****'s sake, there are worse things that can be done to children. High Times subscribers could, arguably, support the sale of drugs to children...or international terrorism. You can make some insanely tenuous connections when you dip into thought crime. (And, yes, so-called hate crime, incitement, Holocaust Denial laws, and so forth, are just as bad as the anti-pedophile hysteria laws.)
All I'm saying is, put the perverts away who actually hurt children. If they possess actual child porn, go ahead and put them away. I don't know about 1,000 years...you could kill 50 kids and not get 1,000 years. Do put them away, though. Just know when to stop, because the hysteria we're seeing today is ***** crazy. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"looking at pics is illegal, because posession of said pics is illegal."
Owning certain books is illegal too and to view certain information can make you a terrorist suspect. Listening to music you don't own must be illegal too is that right?
What if a pic pops up on a website and is stored in your cache. If your computer(s) were suddenly seized is it ok to put you in jail for being a pedophile?
Sometimes societies make stupid laws because they are scared. I have a firm belief that I should be able to record everything I see or hear (or any other sense that is recordable). My memory is not perfect I should be able to keep a perfect copy for as long as I live. Think how much easier life would be if it were searchable... /rant - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just ***** great, if malicious software starts gaining credability as a 'good thing' then where will it stop? What if some bastard manages to write a virus or pair of viri for putting child porn onto your hard drive and then reporting you?
Vigalantism isn't always that great, especially when retarded coppers see it as a particularly good thing. - GlassMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Generally, the word "computer virus" sends shivers down the spine of any computer user. These small, but deadly programs, obviously designed with the most malicious intentions, have done a lot of damage over the past few years. However, it seems that every now and then, viruses become…vigilantes.
The story reported by the Reuters agency seems taken out of a bad comedy. A German child porn offender has turned himself in to the Police, after receiving an e-mail, that that listed the sender as Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), allegedly warning him that he is under investigation for visiting some illegal websites. However, no official authority had sent that e-mail. The author was none other than our “friendly” neighborhood friend, the Sober worm.
"It just goes to show that computer worms aren't always destructive," said a spokesman for police in the western city of Paderborn. "Here it helped us to uncover a crime which would otherwise probably have gone undetected."
Police charged the 20-year-old man after finding pornographic images of children on his home computer.
I think that this story proves that old proverb saying that "Every cloud has a silver lining", even if, in the case of worms and viruses, these silver linings are harder to find than a needle in a haystack. - godmode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Heres the original Reuters story:
BERLIN (Reuters) - A child porn offender in Germany turned himself in to the police after mistaking an email he received from a computer worm for an official warning that he was under investigation, authorities said on Tuesday.
"It just goes to show that computer worms aren't always destructive," said a spokesman for police in the western city of Paderborn. "Here it helped us to uncover a crime which would otherwise probably have gone undetected."
The 20-year-old was caught out by a version of the "Sober" worm, a prolific Internet virus which can invade computers and then send out messages from a host of fabricated addresses.
The trap was set when the man got an email saying "an investigation is underway", that listed the sender as Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). Police charged him after finding pornographic images of children on his home computer. - Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"If we manage one day to overcome all those taboos, pedophilia won't be bad anymore, and will be a solved problem."
I'm betting you don't have any children. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So this guy gets an email message saying that he is under investigation for visiting illegal websites. Since he has, in fact, been surfing for kiddie porn, he turns himself in.
Sounds like natural selection at work to me. - wolrah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looking at pics is illegal, because posession of said pics is illegal.
- turdferguson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet noone would be saying this is a good thing if a saudi gay man got this email and turned himself in to the autorities, confessed to being gay, and the saudis hung, or stoned him.
- pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One problem is that the term pedophile is a medical term but has been over-used and wrongly used on a daily basis on most US newscasts.
Read the differnces of definitions at Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedophile - haakonn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would like to state for the record that pedophilia is not a crime, and is in fact not even mentioned in any law. It's perfectly legal to be a pedophile. What is illegal is sexual activity with someone deemed underage, or possession or distribution of "child pornography".
- thegrinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What an idiot.
- Duston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quick look, there was just a intelligent thoughtful "thread" on Digg. Don't see that every day. Thank you Mister.Joshua and VanillaBaron
- zorbo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wonder who is the most dangerous, someone who happens to have some child "porn" on his disk, or some worm writer who thinks he has the right to judge what what is good and bad and how it should be handled. In fact i don't wonder, I know which one scares me the most.
The link joshua posted is absolutely crazy... being put in jail for having some hentai drawings ?? huh ! That's the limit between judging on facts and crimes , and judging on morals. Morality is subjective, you can't put someone in jail because you think what he did was morally wrong, dammit !
Besides, I think that in another society, with less taboos, what is called pedophilia would not be bad, in itself. (If the children were not hurt of course). What makes it bad for the children in current society is the preeminence of sex taboos, which will convince the children that what happened to them was very, very sick while most of the time as children they didn't think about it that way. This mind schism invariably leads to depression, and in the worst cases schizophrenia. And that's why actual pedophilia is a crime, because the pressure of taboos *will* make great damages to the kids afterward, once those taboos have been forced on them by society because they'll feel guilty.
So pedophilia is indeed a threat to the children and has to be punished, but it's like treating a symptom and not bothering with the cause. If we manage one day to overcome all those taboos, pedophilia won't be bad anymore, and will be a solved problem. Because children mind simply won't be hurt by it... - richardtallent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, then, maybe the FBI should just get a few spammer lists and send out blanket "I know what you did last summer" emails and see what sticks.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are no good spam, virus or worms. No matter what the crime and how stupid the crime of downloading photos.
This is just dumb. - VanillaBaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that no-one should be in trouble if they've accessed illegal material, and it was genuinely unintentional, but that is very different from someone who intentionally downloads it, or someone who accidentally accesses it but then decides to keep it. People who become part of the child pornography system are as culpable as those who create it and distribute it.
I don't agree that you should be able to "record everything (you) see or hear", and in fact, you cannot point your video camera into my backyard or house (where I have an expectation of privacy) in the same way that deliberately trying to see into my house or backyard is illegal (it mean's you're a peeping tom). By your argument, if you walked into a locker room at a school, then you'd be right to record it as well. Sorry, but it is wrong for you to walk into the locker room deliberately, and wrong for you to record it whether the entry was accidental or not.
The reason that "fake" child porn (18+ pretending to be children) is illegal is because it can glorify, legitimise, and encourage sexual activity involving children. If someone made a film that glorified and encouraged the killing of a particular race, that material would also be illegal (in Australia, at least, under incitement laws) EVEN IF the murders shown in the film were not real, but were just FX. But that is different from a small-breasted actor in a porn film - some (18+) women have small breasts and appear in porn films without pretending they're children. There is a difference between a young-looking actor, and an actor pretending to be underage.
Lastly, don't lump transsexual and golden shower porn in with child and animal porn. Children and animals are completely unable to give informed consent to sexual activity, and that is precisely why the material is illegal. It isn't illegal just because some people "don't like" it, or find it "offensive" - they're subjective arguments, and therefore unsuitable for the basis of laws. Unlike with transsexuals and watersports, there is a clear and sensible basis for outlawing all sexual activity involving minors and animals. - syko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Every cloud has a silver lining, but lightning kills hundreds of people each year who are trying to find it"
I've been talking about this all day on landofbob.com and it is obvious that this person was just stupid. I mean the police are not going to send you an email that you are being investigated I'm sorry. - sixister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoever created Sober, thank you, honestly. Even if you don't speak english, thanks.
- spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Not lame. Reuters reported it as well."
What I mean is where did "playfuls" get their information from? It seems like this site plaigarizes news and passes it off as their own.
It's basically a professional-looking blog that doesn't bother to cite references. - ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"this was posted earlier. it's a dup."

I am all for pediphiles being arrested, still should have been filed under stupid criminals..
alot of people would have ran... or reformated drive (i wonderr how many people did erase there hd's after getting the fake sober letters), i guess that is why cops normally dont arest you via email - SurePete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well, thats a funny article, but it doesnt help any child, tho.
that guy only downloaded what was allready there. - rankinreb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol what a freaking moron
- whig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not lame. Reuters reported it as well.
- HardwareWeenie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quite a few years ago, before this was common knowledge, heck probably before some of you ever sat at a computer, I got one of these "you have been identified as a user of child porn" messages at my work email address. I immediately went to my boss and made sure he knew that there was no way I had anything to do with this stuff. Who knows what could have happened if someone in HR had been sniffing my email that day.
- Mr.Bill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is qualifies as an example of a stupid criminal... :-)

- bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally, I think the Sober worm is great. Not only does it not infect Linux systems, it causes moronic sickos to turn themselves in as well.

Are you saying that we should teach children that it's OK for someone old dude to fondle them? That's a pretty twisted outlook, a child would still be damaged by ***** like that and it's not something that society should be promoting. - LSavain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It just goes to show that computer worms aren't always destructive,"
The policeman that said this is a freaking idiot. - nodiggity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I died laughing when I read this because I do in home computer repair and I've had a few customers tell me... man I'm not doing anything illegal, why'd I get this?
- mrkoje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It just goes to show that computer worms aren't always destructive," said a spokesman for police in the western city of Paderborn.
Sounds to me like the spokesman for the Police is a retard. Read--coincidence! - SoundScape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't buy it.
Apologies to PrancingPoney. :) - znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Read it here.. yesterday...

Hmm, so we can't put someone in jail for murdering another person? Cause ya know, some people might be OK with killing others. Who is the government to judge what's right and wrong? ...
"someone who happens to have some child "porn" on his disk"
He turned himself in for something. Do you think it's possible he was guilty of something more than possession of the material? - Zeuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0VIRUS = BAD, STUPID HUMAN = LAUGH
A virus is still bad. You can't really credit the virus with getting the peodphile. It's more a case of a pretty stupid person rather than a pretty smart computer virus.
Computer viruses are bad no matter what. You can't credit the virus with this one, they guy is just stoo stupid to start with. - pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would like to point out that the story is from Germany. The laws in Germany can be found at http://www.ageofconsent.com/germany.htm .
Basically he probably had images of actual children engaging in sexual acts. And for that and for believing that authorities would send him an email and not show up with very large guns, he is an idiot. - hollerith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@mister.joshua -
he's either
a) trolling (purposely trying to elicit some response)
b) a paedophile
Scum-sucking maggot piece of pervert filth.
Happy zorbo? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For the record, zorbo's comment creeps me the hell out.
- itail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I offered (http://itail.blogspot.com/2005/12/spamming-for-vigilante-justice.html) the following thought-experiment -
Suppose someone really tries to call for vigilante justice "the Sober way". He writes the following email and send it to millions randomly selected email addresses across the globe.
"You thought you'll get away with this, but guess what ? I've got it all on tape !!!
Now here's the deal. As much as I'd like to see you rot in jail for the rest of your life, I'll graciously give you exactly 24 hours to do the right thing and turn yourself in, before I'll make the tape public and your sentence will be much more painful.
This is my first and last warning and you know I'm not joking !
Your 24 hours start now -- You know who"
What do you think will happen ? - Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0itail:
Colin Farell will show up and make a ***** movie.
:) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0number one that guy was obviously mentally ill to believe that email in the first place and number two why not a link to the actual article and no some random guy's post?
As long as he is not paying for the act of nor exploiting children he really had nothing to worry about. Looking at pics isn't illegal. It's everything else that is illegal and wrong. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"It just goes to show that computer worms aren't always destructive,'
'The policeman that said this is a freaking idiot."
Why do you say that? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0First time I hear about a worm doing something good.
