Googles bot isnt intelligent. Yet. - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -5/+57everyone go and email the superintendent and tell him he should fire his network administrators:
tmarkley@catawba.k12.nc.us
Hey, if we can agree that it's not Google's fault, we can also agree that the superintendent needs to stop trying to defend his defective (!) network admins. - hackershandbook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+50Should be interesting - whats the odds that someone, somewhere stuffed this file into a copy of personal web server and forgot it was linked to the main site - one sure thing though - Google can afford lawyers much better than a school.
- dtfinch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+47Tuttle city manager Jerry Taylor has just been bested by Catawba County Schools superintendent Tim Markley! This is awesome!
- thefinger, on 10/12/2007, -65/+108People should also learn the difference between "it's" and "its". I'm so sick of these basic mistakes in spelling that people always make.
- Night, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42Great quote: “We have very secure systems here,” Markley said. “There are other private businesses and companies that don’t, so parents should be watching those as well.”
I think its hillarious that somehow google can search secure files on the internet. - deadmoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33I think it is nice that the article has a picture of the superintendent. I now have a face to go with the utter stupidity. No wonder the US education system is going down the toilet. We have dumb asses like that running the schools.
- neo17262, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34how about the school I.T. dept. does their job and follows google's instructions for urgent removal from their indices, just like normal people do. Take a look at the box with the word urgent in red...
http://www.google.com/intl/en/remove.html#exclude_pages - Gootch, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33Dick Boner? what a terrible name
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Exactly
Possibility A) The site isn't secure.
Possibility B) A Google search spider developed intelligence and used this new found power to hack a school document server in order to cache pages of exam results to add to its evil database.
Uh-huh. I know which one I'd place bets on - thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -14/+39Flankk, "it's" is ALWAYS a contraction of "it" and "is". "Its" (sans-apostrophe) is the possessive in every case: http://www.stormloader.com/garyes/its/#top
- arunforce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26I think it's time for a new network administrator.
- dtfinch, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29It's Dick De-Boner, even worse.
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Whats great is when they say they have a secure network. Apparently not.
- matthewsr2000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23i think it's time for the judge to file for a change of name. didn't anyone else notice, "the honorable judge Richard BONER"?
so i guess to his friend he's Dick Boner?
sorry, it's crude and very immature to make fun of a guys name. i guess we should all feel sorry for Mr.Boner. . . or maybe his wife, Mrs.Boner. . . - Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Wow... I never even thought of that. Better go fix my website before the google spider deletes everything.
(I'm not even being sarcastic.) - DickBreath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Dear Parents,
As you may have read in the Winston-Salem Journal by now, Catawba has recently had an incident of being hacked by Google. Google posted screenshots of our sensitive password protected information to their web site.
As I told the Winston-Salem Journal, "We have very secure systems here". Our systems all run Microsoft software to insure that we have the kind of security that we would expect from the Microsoft brand name.
Furthermore, in order to better secure our information from Google in the future, we have moved our servers to the top floor. Network packets originating from Google will now have to travel uphill in an attempt to reach our servers. This should also result in improved service to our community, faculty and students, since packets served from our servers, flowing downhill, will reach your computers with greater pressure.
Sincerely,
Superintendent Tim Malarky - Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18*cough*I'm 100% sure*cough* ... Sorry, must be something going around.
- micro506, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I would expect nothing less from the CIMINALS at GOOGLE. Don't even get me started on CentOS. Remember Tuttle!
- emostar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Just google for.. site:www.catawba.k12.nc.us filetype:xls
- cmiz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17When will the evils of Google and CentOS be taken on? Will somebody please think of the children?!
I can't stand dumb lawsuits from dumber people... obviously a poor permission setup on their site. - mrivorey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Exactly! There was a story on Digg a while back where someone was complaining because Google's spider deleted all their files. It all boils down to how you write the code. Don't code your passwords or delete actions or anything else like that into the links. Plan ahead! If it's that vital, you shouldn't be able to get to it with only a URL.
- elipabst, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I'm guessing Occam's Razor is not part of the school curriculum...
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Possibility C: Evil Pyschologists working for Google extracted the information from the school before Xenu' s warriors could stop them.
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Zing!
+1 for the obscure reference only a geek could love. - aussieaubs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The temporary injunction, granted by the Honorable Richard D. Boner,
HAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAHHAHAH
=) - darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20no, people should be allowed to sue anyone for anything. We pay judges buttloads of taxpayers money to weed out the morons and punish them appropriately.
What is lacking is appropriate laws. If I jump in a car, unlicensed, and drive down an autobahn at a dangerous speed and in a dangerous manner, well we have laws to deal with that kind of thing. Likewise, if you know jack about the internet and jump on the "information superhighway" and behave like an utter foolio, you should be treated in a likewise manner - suspension from using any kind of computer for a certain long period of time and/or a long holiday in the ***** Hotel. - emostar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Another interesting find..
http://72.14.235.104/search?q=cache:oEBC1ZHNzyYJ:www.catawba.k12.nc.us/Pages/teacher_resources/Media/Media%2520Coordinators%2520Directory.xls site:www.catawba.k12.nc.us filetype:xls&hl=ja&ct=clnk&cd=19&client=opera
And you don't even need google cache to see this, it is still avaiable for anyone to download the file!! They have no clue as to what they are doing... - chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11i've seen this happen before, usually the site is using weak javascript password protection. google just goes right through it. and so can anyone who disables javascript.

In response to the story regarding Google and SSN numbers exposed.
1. Google does not index secure password protected pages. The only way I can see it doing this is if it was not securely password protected (if you were using unsecured java script login). If it was using an unsecure method anyone can bypass it.
2. If you hate Google so much have you ever heard of a robots.txt file to tell it what pages it can and can't index? Also if you screw up and don't have one you can request a page be removed from their search: http://www.google.com/intl/en/remove.html#exclude_pages
3. If google indexed it chances are that other spiders did the same. It was probably on other search engines.
4. If you site is so darn secure why is there still sensitive info on your website? http://www.catawba.k12.nc.us/Pages/teacher_resources/Media/Media%20Coordinators%20Directory.xls
5. What kind of school uses SSNs for passwords? According to your students you place SSNs on just about everything pertaining to students.
6. Instead of suing Google and making yourself look stupid you should fire your IT Director. “There are other private businesses and companies that don’t, so parents should be watching those as well.”
Why is she resulting to throwing stones? Don't divert the attention elsewhere. She did not do her job and is making excuses.
7. Having a degree in library science & educational media does not mean you know technology. Windows is the easiest OS to use and to password protect a web directory you just need to right click and change the security settings. She is to blame. She is in charge of IT there and made outlandish and untrue statements. No excuse.
8. Just hope this story ends quietly because the whole technical industry knows you are all wrong. If you blow the story up, there will be a revolt and you will be out of a job once the residents are informed of your ignorance and pointing the finger at someone who is not at fault.
9. Take a look at this story. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/03/24/tuttle_centos/
Maybe you can learn a lesson.
10. Take a second look at your security. Your website is like swiss cheese!
Your IT department is a disgrace to the industry. This is what happens when you lie on your resume, call yourself an IT expert because you can use a home computer, and have a HR staff that does not know anything about the positions they hire for.
I pay NC taxes and I am sooooo glad the lotto is here because I don't want to pay for your salaries from my hard earned money!!!!
Last but not least: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/youare.php - StatiK69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10So because the people that put together the system screwed up time to find a scapegoat. It's not googlebot's fault that your sys admins are morons. Learn to secure your own systems and quit blaming people for your lack of intelligence; simple.
- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is just another simple, common tactic used to try and obscure the truth. Subterfuge if you will. The info was left unsecure, the school knows it now and want to have someone else to blame. The school is, almost undoubtably, at fault, but it doesn't hurt to try and blame someone else. The school would much rather have this type of headline for when it does hit the news instead of something like "School leaves student data unsecure, everyone has access". This will probably blow over like most news stories and we'll probably never hear of it again. But the school saved face by having an accusation of google being what hits the news, not an accusation of them hitting the news.

(Not blaming Microsoft, but just wondering at the level of "sophistication" of the "admins" of this site.) - DarkSorrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It was the spider that can go through any website. If you have a user agent and use GoogleBot as your user agent, any site will open to it.
It was IT that failed to block GoogleBot. so IT should be fired - shortkid422, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11*cough*idiots*cough* Sorry, little flem there, had to get rid of it.
Seriously though, I'm 99% sure it's the fault of the school, not Google. - chevy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I love the fact that this paranoid little mental midget believes that google would 'hack' their web servers.
Two possibilities here: gross negligence on the part of the school, or google intentionally breaking into password protected sites to post information that is not going to generate profit.
My bet is that at least a few of the parents are technically knowledgeable enough to realize that this is an effort to deflect blame on the part of the school. - theunderground5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7they probly don't know a computer from a hole in the wall and they just want to make some money so they get hacked and take it out on google
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Of course it must be Google's fault - probably has happened millions of times, but lucky for the rest of us, it's a well known fact that all the really smart uber-geeks work for the NC school system and they nailed those sneaky google bastards.
It could happen - NOT. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Place in robots.txt:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /poorly_password_protected_directory/
Place this in the <head> tag of each web page that links to the password protected page:
<meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow" />
Hooray!
/who wants to bet it was password-protected with a javascript script? ^_^ - charmedguy18, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8God, these people should know that GOOGLE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR STUPID FILES!
:-D - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6they posted private information on a public website, they are the liable ones.
oh and google doesn't screen shot websites, thats just retarded. i just feel sorry for google having to put up with ***** like this. - aussieaubs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6shortcomings......... boner

Very verry bad. - alcimedes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I can't believe it took that long before someone mentioned it. HA HA HA. Dick Boner, and he works for a school. I wonder if it's too easy for the kids to even bother making fun of...
Nah. - StinkyMonkeyCat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Google = Skynet . Today Google has become fully aware and is taking over, beginning with an all important North Carolina school district.
BTW - Check out that superintendent's picture... he looks rather psychotic. - sroerick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I met a kid once named Harry Dickman.
- Clearz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Its as simple with this. If you got a problem with your data, dont ***** post it on a web server or at least if you do use some simple server side sesion based login system to stop access. FFS some ppl.
- therernospoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Guess they never heard of robots.txt.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5“We have very secure systems here"
well clearly you ***** don't because an internet crawler can access it. i bet the same information is on yahoo as well.
this is typical of schools, staffed by morons who work in a culture of blame - turboslacker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I had the misfortune of living in Catawba county in the mid '90s. This is the place where people still openly wear KKK hats and shirts. This is the place where I watched a 40 year old man add 5 and 3 with his fingers. Where I witnessed a woman who thought her $1,500 check was for $15,000. They make moonshine and race cars, but they don't graduate 8th grade. It's a racist, backwards, hillbilly hell hole. I bet this admin can't even spell Google, much less administer the systems for the entire school system.
