- lucutus, on 02/12/2008, -3/+92My wife and I just went through this and managed to get the scammers to give up real names, addresses, and phone numbers. Turned out they were in Virginia. After receiving 8 fraudulent checks from them we were able to get the government agencies the checks were drawn on to press charges.
- KirbyMeister, on 02/12/2008, -6/+90Maybe give the nigerians the e-mail addresses of high-ranking Scientologists? I can't imagine them being smart enough to avoid these...
- Fantonel, on 02/12/2008, -3/+71Ohh man, the Commodore 64 wood carving is priceless.

- STLMikey, on 02/12/2008, -0/+12Thats nothing compared to this : http://www.419eater.com/html/joyce_ozioma.htm
The guy gets the scammer to hand-write Harry Potter! - tokyboy, on 02/12/2008, -2/+11You should have stopped at SSN.
- alittleroy101, on 02/12/2008, -0/+9That is an awesome story.
- thebaron2, on 02/12/2008, -0/+9Sarcasm - either you get it, or you don't.
- alvinrod, on 02/12/2008, -1/+10I can't believe that it lacks one of my all time favorite stories. You can read about the poor dope who tries to scam some ANUS laptop computers and gets taken badly in return. http://thescambaiter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10 ...
- Pimptastic, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7One of the more entertaining sites on the web
- chihpih, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7i played along with a nigerian scammer once and it was a lot of fun. he asked me what my profession was and i said "custodial engineer" and after a while i got tired of responding to him.
- Maluka, on 02/12/2008, -1/+8I just got one from TONY PIRES claiming to be from Citibank London. I was going to delete it from the program I use to preview my mail, but now I'm going to ***** with him. Hehe.
- twertyto, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7Maybe not so brilliant here. Shortly after that incident the person who reversed the scam stopped sending correspondence and hasn't been heard from since. I hope he is ok. Anyone have an update on that story?
- Madsen, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7It really easy to scam the scammers...Here's my first try...and my first trophy :-) http://madsenblog.dk/?p=366
- flashingcurser, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7I had a similar scammer try to scam me when I tried to sell my old toyota landcruiser on craigslist. The buyer was supposedly from the UK and writing a check from a bank in washington DC. Mind you I'm in Montana. The scam works like this: he sends a check for more than the amount to cover "shipping", I cash his check and send a check for the extra to his phony "shipper", my bank cashes his check because there is a normal delay when transactions cross many time zones. When my bank realizes that the check was a forgery, which can take several weeks, I have to pay the full amount.
I was tipped off immediately because the writer of the emails had very poor grammar. Worse than mine. He also used americanized (americanised?) versions of words. He also would purchase the truck sight-unseen. This was right after the bombings in London so I was concerned that it may be someone who was funding nefarious deeds in the UK. I sent all the information I could gather to the local branch of homeland security, they informed me what the scam was.
So, for a bit of fun, knowing that there had to be at least 3 people involved. One to write the emails, one to forge the check, and one to be the phony company. The first check they sent me I wrote them a nasty email saying the fed-ex envelope contained nothing, they promptly sent another. I did this twice, worked like a charm. Then I told them that it didn't arrive, the sent a third and final check. After that I got a lot of email regarding nigerian royalty, I forwarded it the buy of the toyota. It stopped about 2 weeks later.
I sold the truck to a local. - justice7, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7Worth a look for a great laugh

- llamaguy132, on 02/12/2008, -2/+8never underestimate the stupidity of our countrymen. remember, we elected Bush, TWICE!
- griff36, on 02/12/2008, -1/+7this is impossible to read.
so confusing - KnightMareInc, on 02/12/2008, -0/+6the first one is pretty old but never saw the tattoo one.
- mississippiman, on 02/12/2008, -1/+6Gotta disagree with ya, if these people want to scam someone then I say ***** them. He got what he deserved.
The murder thing is a bit much though - tomjm5000, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5The moral of the story? Almost everyone is dumb.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+5I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
- Calcularius, on 02/12/2008, -2/+7*THAT* is how you really get back at a "scammer"
Reversing the criminal behavior, and "scamming the scammer" is not going to stop them... if anything, they will learn from your criminal tactics. Like the example where the fake laptop was sent for "hundreds of dollars" That is no less illegal that what the original criminals were trying to do. - techresearcher, on 02/12/2008, -1/+5***** THE SPAMMERS!
- ronaldinho, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4I had a similar experience myself, though at that time I wasn't aware enough to realize that they were spammers. Half a year ago I had to be in charge of renting out a room in my apartment after one of my roommates had to move out. I put an ad on craigslist and I got like 15 emails, and after reading the comment thread above only did I realize that at least 7 of them were spammers. They all wanted my room without seeing it and were willing to write a check that covers more than the amount necessary. Being an honest person, I said that was not necessary and I specifically requested them to send the right amount. I also asked when they will be coming, and told them I was not going to cash the check unless they arrive in person. Needless to say, they never emailed me back again. I guess the key is just be really careful. And make sure you get to see the person first before doing ANY transactions. That will decrease your chances of getting fooled. Next time though I will play with them.
- ramunenke, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4are the nigerians predator? I mean its a battle between cunning con artists and powerful dumbasses.
- centran, on 02/12/2008, -1/+5You have to remember that some of these scammers have tricked people into flying over and then they kidnap them, hold them for ransom, and then kill them.
- vatchea, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4"You know what toby? When the son of the deposed King of Nigeria emails you directly asking for help, you help. His father ran the freaking country okay?"
- llamaguy132, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4well they are not really cunning...
- jserio, on 02/12/2008, -1/+5I love this site. Spent an entire weekend reading the forums. In one thread, they had this scammer pay to ship the "products" several times and each time they sent a washing machine, oven, dryer, and other large appliances filled with bricks and other junk. Priceless!
- mikehill33, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4AWESOME!

- taintedzodiac, on 02/12/2008, -3/+6These are quite old. Fun to look back on, but I'd love to hear some new stories about counter-scams. Anyone?
- SonicAD, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3If you're talking about people from Niger, the proper term seems to be Nigeriens, actually (as opposed to the Nigerians from Nigeria)
- pimpofpixels, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3I like asking telemarketers if they want to buy things from me.
