- alvinrod, on 09/06/2008, -8/+129Aren't most facebook users already zombies?
/rimshot - Tippx, on 09/06/2008, -19/+116john mccain is old (I always get dugg up when i do this)
- ImYourRealDad, on 09/06/2008, -8/+49"Oh no, a social networking site, I have to degrade it's users with my witty comment!"
eat dick, seriously. almost all of you ***** that constantly berate and ***** on social networking websites by calling their users "zombies" or "idiots" or "[insert something derogative]" are some of the biggest internet-hypocrites i've ever known to functionally use a keyboard. WHAT THE ***** DO YOU THINK DIGG HAS TURNED INTO?! I've been using Digg for years as a source of entertainment and information, only to see it's slow descent into the likes of ebaumsworld infamy. Digg is now a place where little ***** and school library bastards flood my monitor with 4chan garbage and duped stories while ***** on anything pop-culture related. half of you are as childish as the things you claim to hate are. GROW UP. no one is forcing you to use facebook or myspace or friendster. - novemberdream07, on 09/06/2008, -2/+27http://www.instantrimshot.com
- Tippx, on 09/06/2008, -3/+18what did i say that has anything to do with politics? there is a 72 year old man who lives in an innumerable amount of houses, and i was stating my opinion that said man is old.
- sockpuppets, on 09/06/2008, -1/+16Are you coming onto me in a way I don't understand?
- WaveRunningNakd, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8whatever. like you wouldn't hit it.
- Tyrghast, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8Oh how bravely you faced the DDoS attack.
- Resiroth, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7This is why I hate applications that calmly remind you they have all your information (and I'm not surprised they could make a botnet either). I remember there was something like this that every time you went to a website it would send a couple thousand requests for captcha, attempting to crash the RIAA site.

- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -2/+8"As a practical matter, it is not that easy to get an application with millions of users," Schnitt said. "Why wouldn't you get venture capital or make money with ad rather than use it to take down a website?"
Because you're not motivated by money, but instead politics? Or maybe you want to take down a competitor? - Butter66, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5facebook apps are the biggest load of *****. I started ignoring them after the first one I clicked said it could use your personal information then made you invite 15 friends to use it. Then I started ignoring facebook altogether until I got a bumper sticker sent from the app, then I thought, hey I wanna see what it says, so I clicked it
- SkeletalBias, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5Dugg, because this is true.
- iXneonXi, on 09/06/2008, -1/+6I thought this was going to be an article from The Onion.
- riggs32, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4besides not having friends?
- MifareSTd50, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4AHH! Why didn't I think of that!?? My facebook app is completely pointless, yet it has 3,040 users. Anyone want to help me write some javascript? :D
- matthewbot, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Anybody who owns a decently popular website could do the same thing. Heck, it might be fun to slip some kind of DoS attack in an article just as it reaches popularity on digg, harnessing and multiplying the digg effect and channeling it to some other site...
- naffets, on 09/06/2008, -2/+5I'm sure most people that use facebook simply ignore all the application requests? Surely some percentage of the userbase knows its all crap?
- outreach417, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3...send more cops!
- MifareSTd50, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3damn right.
- Brak710101, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2It's not about the money...
It's about sending a message. - inactive, on 09/06/2008, -2/+4right - cause i needed another reason not to use facebook
- SeeSpotDigg, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3Facebook users and zombies are synonymous aren't they?
- simplyintricate, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3This reminds me of a DDoS attack I once faced. It originated from one of those "free ipod" websites back when that was actually popular. Close to 2,000 people were online on that site at once and when I looked at the source code, there were 3 iframes directed to a huge picture on my website, with the iframes refreshing every couple of seconds.
We just have to be more careful out there. Be cautious! - inactive, on 09/06/2008, -3/+5I am facebook user 12927781345- I like superpoke, my naughty friends, friends for sale... they are super great... I need some human flesh now.
- doug22, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2I know they aimed the attack at their servers but this still feels like there's a felony somewhere in this science project
- Torley, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2It would be awesome if zombies from Facebook went up against bots from MySpace, culminating in one glorious, social networking battle of the ages!
- rheaume, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2Why ***** with a good thing
thumbs up - Telmarine, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2I realy dont understand what you guys see in the onion
- LiberalKid, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2You're quite a tool mikesbaker, one for being unable to appreciate a joke, and two for getting self-righteous for absolutely no reason.
Saying John McCain is old only relates to politics in the fact that John McCain is involved in politics and since McCain is old, its more stating a fact about someone in politics. If you can't handle actually hearing facts that are loosely related to politics, I suggest sir that you leave the internets. - adventflux, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2The headline sounds like it's straight out of the Onion.
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3Yes.
- bagboyrebel, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2As much as I don't mind it when people bash sites like facebook and myspace, you are entirely correct. Digg has largely become what it's users claim to hate, and a lot of people still don't see it.
- d3sapar3cid0, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Old news
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Would you join my Battle of the Bands tour?
- bagboyrebel, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1"Facebook downplayed the attack, saying that any developer that could figure out how to make a successful application would make money other ways."
Some people just want to watch the world burn. - iicemagiiciian, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Haven't you learned /anything/ from Dark Knight?
:P - Tippx, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1mikesbaker you missed one
http://digg.com/music/John_Mayer_to_TMZ_Game_On?t= ...
So you failed. - Demonmonger, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1This would be better pulled off using a flash swf object that has been embedded on numerous websites as a widget. Each time users visited web pages with the embedded widget, their client would initiate the dos attack via the swf.
- daspacepirate, on 09/07/2008, -3/+4***** you, two of my friends died using Facebook.
- abajaj2280, on 09/06/2008, -3/+4THE WAR IS NOT OVER.
ZOMBIE VS PIRATES
PIRATES WILL WIN! - Ismith988, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2I was kind of hoping this was a zombie version of facebook
- synthoid, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Not if they use the all-new Google Chrome
- Myztry, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Sounds similar to the Digg effect...
MUST HAVE BRAINS... - donna1234, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1All that is necessary to create the Facebook Botnet is to have users choose install a rogue Facebook application written by an outside developer

http://www.webthe.info - Warpling, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1yea, sadly most are not us and have a nice 12 by 8 grid of apps.
- warmuffin, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1i agree with another reply; I know people who have TONS of applications on their facebook, and i belong to a few (not only do I have to accept I don't know what they are really up to, but they are complete wastes of time as well). When I interact with a friend on an application sometimes they reply with a 'whoa! i didn't know I had this!'; so I am not only concerned about my facebook friend who is obviously insane, but about all the people who click and never remove applications, nor do most people even read 'fine print' anymore.
Society has problems, and I am so excited that at least some researchers out there 'want' to point them out.
Goodluck world, we've still got a ways to go! - drgmdp, on 09/07/2008, -1/+2i don't degrade all social network users, just facebook ones
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Huh?
- SkeletalBias, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0I usually refuse the requests myself. I only usually download an app if I actually found it on my own and want to use it. I could easily see some one using one of the quiz apps for a a botnet because they won't allow you to finish the quiz until you send requests to all your friends.
