I enjoy the amount of personal information Google has. I control how much they get. It's enough so that I've got a unifed center of activity on the internet, yet not enough that a hacker could steal my life savings. People only get information put into Google if they:

1) Give it to Google, via a form, resume or email. This is no different from any other company -- if you GIVE Google information, they'll keep it.

2) Put the information on a public site that is crawled by a Google spider. If Google Search finds it, it means it was in a public site and any random person could have seen it anyway. Not Googles fault that it can get access to public sites.

After a little questioning, i found where they got it, and promptly removed it. To this day i still get calls from Malaysia and Singapore from weird girls thinking i will give them moderation rights if they call me and talk to me *sighs*

McLurker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This seems a bit pointless, as there are plenty of other ways to get your phone number, including reverse look-ups. Best to go for the ex-directory (unlisted in the U.S.) option. Why do I need strangers to be able to find out my phone number, anyway?

Kudos to Google for offering the option of removing your name from the list. Doesn't affect me, as I don't think they do UK numbers, but its good to see a company taking privacy seriously- especially one with that amount of power. Here's hoping they continue to offer us so much control over our data, and that Google extends that control to all the data it holds on us, as far as possible.

The problem is that they all give away different pieces of the puzzle to get you to buy their information. As an example, by going to all 40 sites, you can get someone's name, parent's name (often mother's maiden name), date of birth, employer name, spouse's name, kids' names...all for free. This is the kind of stuff you need to have to verify your identity with credit card companies and banks. I don't think strangers should be able to get this information for free.

http://www.regainingprivacyonline.com will show you how to get off of all of them. Yes, I'm selling the information...yes, you can find it for free online. I did when I wrote the book, but it took me DAYS to find all of the sites and figure out how to remove myself. The site shows you how to do it in about an hour, it's cheap, and it will save you a ton of time.

They also love when you answer your phone in a crowded place like a large store/mall or are outdoors on a windy day or when traffic is zooming by. Sp0rAdiC, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I haven't lost a call in the 20 months I've had my cell phone, and it works in a whole lot more places than a land line would. If I don't feel like talking to people, I can put it on silent, turn it off, or just screen my calls. Maybe if you live out in the middle of nowhere a land line would be better, but it'd be a reach.
