- Julikaefer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4From TFA: "- We change extension. There are so many extensions out there. So if even someone else gets your files, but doesn't know what the extension is, they'll have a hard time. *evil grin*"
Seems somebody doesn't know GNU file. - johnfowles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah. That method is very unaffective. Not worth the read.

"Eraser is a secure data removal tool for Windows. It completely removes sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns."

# dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/hda
Have fun :)
BTW don't blame me if this kills your computer :) - matx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1By the way, if the fbi was looking for your data, they wouldnt need to turn your computer on.
Also writing over files dont make a file unrecoverable, with some clever programs, you can get the original data back even if it has been written over many time. It is not that hard to do. This guy obvoisuly dont understand how hard drives work.
There are free software that can attempt to make data unrecoverable, but it requires the data to be written many times and dont guarantee a secure deletion.
in a nutshell, protection your data from the fbi isnt as simple as editing files :D - CamZak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Perfect! I'll rename all my secret l33t h4x0r files to .exe extensions and the FBI will never catch me. Oh damn, I run linux. Dugg so other people can see how stupid this person is.
Okay...for starters...I'd say that it's probably possible to recover portions of a jpeg or most other image formats even if you do mess up most of it. While the program you're using to view the image you're trying to mess up might complain, that's because it's written to load a jpeg and assumes someone didn't monkey with it in a text editor...now the FBI...probably has far more advanced software that could look at an image and try to determine the non corrupted parts and then try to stitch whatever portions it has together. I suppose that for some image formats you might be able to mess up a good portion of it...but still...it's completely stupid.
Secondly...rename the file to exe? What the heck? I'd think the FBI would go looking for exe files first because of self decompressing files and an exe that's crashing would merrit a quick look in a hex editor. And let me guess, the person who wrote this has no clue that most files have a header? Give me a random file, a hex editor, and 30 seconds and I can probably tell you what type of file it is. Also, doesn't renaming the file leave even more traces of the original file? I'm not sure on this one, but knowing how poorly written windows is, I'd guess and say it creates a new copy of the file with the new name when you rename a file so now you have two copies. Not to mention you'll have the file listed in your recent documents because you opened it in notepad, leaving anyone investigating your hard drive going "okay...now why is he opening an exe in notepad".
I love the part about using shift del... fat/ntfs files when deleted are easily recoverable! There are programs that securely wipe a program off your hard drive. But I don't condone using them. If you're doing something so wrong that merits using that kind of program, you're doing something that needs to be caught.
