- da5idblacksun, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35Nice one.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -5/+147the most rediculous errors i used to get back when i was using windows:
"Error: no error" - Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -28/+1i fell over after lmao.
- hammydude, on 10/12/2007, -14/+22Only in windows can this happen...
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Yea, I used to get that one every time rundll32 ran, so I added it to the exceptions list.
Then, when I found out that it did that for Half-Life 2 and the blasted Control Panel, I just turned the damn feature off. Blah. - thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11That was actually caused by spyware/malware/viruses. I can say this because I ran Ad-aware and Spybot S&D on a client's computer when they started geting the same error[except this one was closing Windows Explorer] and it removed the annoying error box.
- jtjenn, on 10/12/2007, -36/+22why are people hating on Windows, I mean, I like Macs too, but you guys seem to be against windows or something. Windows have some mistakes and it's not perfect, I don't think Macs are 100% perfect either.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -8/+61"but you guys seem to be against windows or something."
Congratulations, you've found Digg. - thashiz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Jumping the gun, jtjenn -- no one said anything about Macs yet. Don't start damage control too early. ;)
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I should point out that I got that error once, and it was with windows explorer, if you click the little link at the bottom, it tells you how to fix it, bascially the program is acting in a way it shouldn't, and DEP sets it off, its actually more annoying then useful.
- tdhurst, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37@jtjenn
You MUST be new here. - awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3@shrewduser:
Actually..That's not really a windows thing..that's just laziness. Chances are they just caught an exception (or rather, some kind of error handling, not really exceptions..) and they didn't put in a check to suppress a 'no error' message, so the code fell to a default "else { MessageBox("Error %s", exception.what()); }" kind of thing. - DubbleA, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4You should submit this to This Is Broken
http://www.thisisbroken.com/ - gwill11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Vista has an updated version.

- blinkfink182, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3This is better...
http://kellyreardon.dyndns.org/blogs/kelly/2006/05/nifty_explorer_error.html - VSKBadCRC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13My personal favorite error message from Windows:

Don't be such a moran ;) - H080J03, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1windows vista just gets plain silly, i had vista ask me once if it could use the dumb uac thing, this is a good reminder why apple or ubuntu will eventually over thorw ms.
- DJMajickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More like stupid user error setting up DEP and removing Windows Updates from the Exception list. Sorry IT person who's seen this before from some mighty stupid users that think that WUpdate.exe means that someone is hacking into their computer. I only wish I could take the computer away from these users but my bosses won't let me.
- dustedotnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1shrewduser, I remember getting that one too! It was in Visual Basic .NET, I think.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -5/+147the most rediculous errors i used to get back when i was using windows:
- NoAccounting4me, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11That's elegant
- diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is a truism.
- Waterrat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41 Puts a smile on my face.
- diggthiscrap, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4Amazing!
- gd007, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1it is amazing that windows will work properly after you close this.
- sorrow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Suprised? i'm not..
I wonder what happens if you click on "what should i do", lol- darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"Microsoft recommends that you download the latest updates right when they are released", blah blah blah I'm sure. Have fun downloading them when Windows blocks the app...
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3Bwua ha ha ha ah aha ha ha ha!!!!!
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Awwww,
Obviously not many NT4 Sysadmins in the crowd. :)
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Awwww,
- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -50/+10Most likely the system is either overclocked too much or has some defective RAM.
- oakj423, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53screw you for your logical explanations - this is a place for microsoft bashing
- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -26/+6-8 in less than 5 minutes? Wish those digging me down would tell me why.
- JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9He just did. We all know there's a logical reason for this, but most of us don't care. :P
- sparks2, on 10/12/2007, -17/+1bury...
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"-8 in less than 5 minutes? Wish those digging me down would tell me why."
Because you are "most likely" wrong. - gd007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7all votes are confidential!
- timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20because blaming ram or overclocking for what is clearly a software error is ***** my friend.
- Scruffydan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10It looks like the guy had DEP turned on. While DEP is a great way to help prevent buffer overrun exploits it screws over many legitimate programs, and that is why the option to turn it (it is off by default) on is buried deep somewhere.
It is a shame that MS products can;t function with this feature turned on though.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Execution_Prevention - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3@timmarhy
I have code that I can cause to crash with all sorts of strange/fun/weird error message when run on marginal hardware.
Or are you of the opinion that overclocking can not cause such errors? Running hardware out of spec MAY cause issues to crop up that do not happen when the system is ran in spec.
But I have to ask, why do so many on digg think that "most likely" means the same thing as "the cause is"? - i440, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"screw you for your logical explanations - this is a place for microsoft bashing"
+30 diggs and counting...that really says something.
"because blaming ram or overclocking for what is clearly a software error is bulls[...] my friend."
But if it were Linux, it would CLEARLY be a hardware error, right? - NOFXY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ i440
Come back to us whenever ANY linux distro stupidly screws itself over. - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@NOFXY
Ubuntu's Xserver upgrade that killed the system for quite a few users.
Some years back Redhat shipped a version of RPM that would corrupt its internal package database at the drop of a hat.
Others have happened but I will leave the research to you.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Does this have something to do with ExecuteDisable bit or NX bit? I've never seen an error like that.
- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6That is exactly what causes that message - most likely caused by memory being defective or by the driving of the processor at a higher than rated rate.
- timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5corrupt memory will not cause windows to block a program. it will cause the system to crash or to hang.
- Scruffydan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Looks like its the DEP feature, NOT an overclocked CPU, or defective ram
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Execution_Prevention - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3@timmarhy
You don't understand, I have a system that when it is overclocked too much such DEP errors happen. If you think about it for more than 15 seconds you will see how such things are possible. - Jwymon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One second diagnosis for any problem:
Ah yea, looks like you've got bad RAM and...probably over overclocked your processor.
I'll send you the bill. - Bradl3y, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1daldredge is probably right. DEP is turned on for all system apps by default. Either his WUpdate is corrupt, he has a virus/spyware, or there is memory issue. If the right part of code stored in the RAM was corrupt, it could trigger DEP.
- suicidal-kid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That happens to me everyonce in a while when going through my files. It is a pain in the ass, but I don't make a big deal out of it.
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20best error I've seen/received was on XBMC (ie: not a microsoft product).
It said:
"Error: Success"- crackhammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I remember an error a programmer friend described in a home brewed accounting software package, I personally would have LOVED to see this in person. The error was:
ERROR
What did you do?
You should not have done so! - emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd like to add the old Apple audible "It's not my fault" to my list of favorites. The hell it aint!
- crackhammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I remember an error a programmer friend described in a home brewed accounting software package, I personally would have LOVED to see this in person. The error was:
- thecompkid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Report the threat to Microsoft and see what happens.
Headlines tomorrow:
New Virus Poses as Windows Update: Never Run Windows Update Again
...Microsoft, Inc. has identified a potential security threat with its update system. Be sure to update your computer as soon as possible...- kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3using the updater to update the updater so it wont update bad content through the updater?
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Or be prepared to buy Vista! With a new patch that stops this from happening!
- tpscrat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes, that is Execute Disable in all of it's glory. I work at a repair shop and we see that all the time. Usually some sort of malware causing the error for non malicious programs.
- promacros, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ironic, but not dumb as the owner of the flickr account claims. The owner implies all MS had to do was detect the publisher as Microsoft then ignore the behavior. NOT a good idea. I hate people that criticize without thinking.
- cky3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wait hang on, I cant breath from all those words you shoved in my mouth.
- arlied, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Look, this is an indication that Microsoft is slowly cleaning up security on Windows. This dialog box means that Data Execution Prevention (DEP, which uses the processor's NX bit when possible, otherwise just uses weaker software-only protection) caught a process misbehaving. In this case, the process was one of Microsoft's own components.
Yes, it's embarassing. But think about it -- it means they are slowly improving their products. DEP detected a security flaw in the Automatic Updates client, and stopped it. What would you *prefer* happen -- that AU just keep running?
Considering Microsoft has written and published far more code than any of you have ever dreamed of writing, it's inevitable that they'll find defects in their own code. At least they're finding them. Only an ignorant fanboy believes that their favorite software is free from bugs, including security bugs.
Laugh all you want. Post all the snide comments you want. But the reality is that Microsoft is slowly improving the quality of security on their platform.- timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4considering microsoft has made far more money then any of you can dream of, i think there's no excuse for how long they let their OS go without any real security
i'm so sick of MS apologists - Kosterfield, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yeah they're sure going slowly...
- dignation, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4The only reason that Microsoft lets their OS go with out any real security is because, frankly, they don't have to. Normal computer users are going to get windows anyway.
Monopolies are bad
Standards are good
Is there any real solution? - Cablito, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Don't say anything that even remotelly resembles "Windows does not suck", or thoughts in the vicinity of that. You get burried.
Fanboys don't know how to use sites like Secunia and see for themselves.
XP vulnerabilities total & total unpatched VS. Debian vulnerabilities.
I love debian, but hey, there are more unpached vulnerabilites than XP, so, its kinda hard to say its safer than Windows without giving it a second thought.
Plus, linux fanboys love to put the linux kernel in an higher plane, and tell us lame users that the kernel is one thing and (distro XXX) is another.
Lets do the same for Windows: Lets put Windows 2003 (servers) appart from XP (desktops), then we discuss security, and please, make sure you know what you are talking about. - locnguyen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The key word being slowly.
- kmarchiori, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Why would someone mod him down? Are you that much of a religious zealot? Is your mac a diety? (I think not) This was the most thought out and probably best written post on this board. Think about why you're modding someone down.
- dignation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Microsoft Works" is an oxymoron
- timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4considering microsoft has made far more money then any of you can dream of, i think there's no excuse for how long they let their OS go without any real security
- Wilson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3A friend of mine received a similar one at this years Outdoor LAN Party; he put it in his share for everybody: http://steven.wilson.googlepages.com/DEP-Explorer.png
Maybe Windows was spiteful of his choice of visual style? :P- Cablito, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1The guy uses WindowsBlinds on Windows to make it look like a Mac, he is a idiot^2.
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This happens all the time, mostly out of nowhere, well seemingly. But hey, its a piece of software you are running 24/7, it may not be perfect, or even close, but I have yet to get a BSOD. Progress....
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I agree, Windows runs very well and for extended periods of time without issue for me. The only thing that has given me grief more than once in the past 5 or so years was bad video drivers on my Thinkpad when I was fiddling with them in combination with undervolting my CPU too much. It'll BSOD if I do the wrong thing with that, but that's not Window's fault so much as it is me monkeying around and bad 3rd party software.

- michael6055, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2my all time favorite windows message: No Keyboard attached, press F12 to continue...
- brutalentropy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, not only did you repost something someone else already did, but you managed to get it wrong. That is not a windows error, that is something you get when the machine POSTs.
Aaaaand it's not F12.
God I hope you people don't work tech support, it explains some of the calls I get at work and have to try and clean up. - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@brutalentrop
If you had as much knowledge as you think you do you would know that the error message in question is System/BIOS dependent. - jborg91, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2F12 brings up the boot menu on Dell computers.
- brutalentropy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, not only did you repost something someone else already did, but you managed to get it wrong. That is not a windows error, that is something you get when the machine POSTs.
- Jaybob404, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3They released a patch to this already. They call it Linux. It takes a while to install but it fixes this problem forever.
- Cablito, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1A "while" is a generous understatement.
- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Linux isn't the answer to every computing problem, believe it or not. :)
- sinfony, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5God help you if you try to get anything working properly in Linux. And I say this as somebody who spends more than half my computing time on Ubuntu.
- Cablito, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Just do I get a lot of +
Linux is the solution to all the problems. - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Cablito
I have a mission critical app that isn't certified to run on Linux as do quite a few other people.
Linux is just a tool, it is a good tool, but don't mistake it for a hammer and every problem for a nail.
- marcamillion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6More hilarious than Bill Gates getting a BSOD during a presentation of Windows 98. Love it.
- jmw2trinculo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's quite simple.
If you don't like Windows; don't use it.- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is a logic / rational thinking free thread.
Please keep your coherent thoughts to yourself :) - plingboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if only it were so simple
- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is a logic / rational thinking free thread.
- rhettilda, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0This is why once I graduate I am switching to Apple...good call?
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Say something pro-apple, and get buried. Say something anti-apple, and get buried. I guess you can't win...
- valinorbob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That is very odd.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's an Operating System - like ANY software in the world, it will have it's moments. Please for the love of this digg don't start on how Macs and Linux are SOO much better. I am writing this on Ubuntu and I own an iMac...I use all 3 OSs daily and trust me...in the end they're all capable of having the same problems.
Get over it.- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1x100. For every Windows crash I've seen just as many Mac OS breakdowns. Usually with windows it's bad hardware or 3rd party software, and predictable at that.
OS's are made by humans, they're not perfect and they can go bonkers from time to time. With the wide array of support Windows has to have for so many things, it does incredibly well.
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1x100. For every Windows crash I've seen just as many Mac OS breakdowns. Usually with windows it's bad hardware or 3rd party software, and predictable at that.
- Volsfan91, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As I heard someone say the other day, the users of Vista are now having to babysit Microsoft's latest OS becuase of decades of terribly written, easily exploitable operating systems.
- Bradl3y, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Please explain how users have to "babysit" Vista. I really don't see how you have to babysit it any more than any other OS. If you are referring to it prompting you for a password to permit an activity, many linux distro's will do the same thing. The alternative option is having it flat out denying access when the current user doesn't have the proper permissions to do what the software is attempting to do. This seems more of a convienience to me so I don't have to log out and log in as an administrator just to allow a program to run, I can simply type the administrator password.
- 00monkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2technically this isn't ironic... its only ironic if the update was to fix this problem from happening
- Bradl3y, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It is ironic because Windows update is there to keep your computer safe. To keep your computer safe, windows has prevented Windows Update from running. If you don't see the irony you are technically an idiot.
- Dotnetsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Irony is, there is no irony. Even Windows Update has bugs. It just got "ahead of itself" a bit. So, get over it.
- bryan986, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There isn't any program named Automatic Updates, updates are done via an activex control in the browser.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.- netwerx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"wuauclt.exe" is the program used for automatic updates.
Its in the "System32" directory. However i believe that the downloads are done with a activex control.
- netwerx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"wuauclt.exe" is the program used for automatic updates.
- Jfave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...and finally Microsoft is finally doing something to protect the user ;)
- yeahright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I came across a similar error in the Event Viewer when troubleshooting an issue with one of our Win 2k3 Exchange servers:
"The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service depends on the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service which failed to start because of the following error:
The operation completed successfully."
Good times... - ItNeverEnds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Lol. Reminds me of the time my Windows firewall blocked Windows Update.
- kevgig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Of the countless error messages and BSOD's I have seen, This is a first.
My gut tells me you may have a virus.
I could be very wrong, but I have seen it happen before many times that a virus will use the same/or similar name as real M$ file/ process names.
I would take a closer look if I was you. - SuperFarStucker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Something is wrong with your system. Likely malicious code, although it is possible for hardware failures to cause such errors. I'm sure you'll get more of the same if you don't rectify the situation.
- Riceman13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that really makes me smile
- dtfinch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've had Notepad crash on XP. It seemed screenshot-worthy: http://mytsoftware.com/misc/notepad.png
- Monolith2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to get these all the time. They started right after XP SP2 was released. You'd get them if you were running an AMD 64 bit chip.
- casted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys should check out http://thedailywtf.com/ when they do pop-up potpourris. Lots of stupid error dialogs.
- toothy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool.
Kinda reminds me of an old AMiGA Workbench error.
