do you drive a hybrid and love the smell of your own farts as well :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28A better variant would blackmail the user by threatening to email pornography to their entire address list.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27"Where's the common sense?"
Exactly! Next thing you know there'll be a user of digg naming themself "*****". - stevenb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23If you were required to pass an IQ or internet "common sense" test, before you logged onto the internet.. it would be a hell of a lot better of a place to hang out. ;)
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Stop screwing your doctor.
- gwjc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"Sophos said that e-mails, which have the subject line "Microsoft WinLogon Service -- Vulnerability Issue" and purport to come from patchAmicrosoft.com, claim that a vulnerability has been found and direct the recipient to download the fix. However, the link really points to a non-Microsoft website and initiates the download of the Troj/BeastPWS-C Trojan horse"
- Sadly, anyone dumb enough to run this will heed the warning but run it the next time, when it comes with a different subject line and attachment name. - Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19It's been said many times before, Common sense is not that common.
- Mufflegrump, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I sure would miss it though :(
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Like information, porn wants to be free.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I'm not entirely averse to a tax on people who can't find free porn on the internet without resorting to DigiKeyGen.
- Pogue_Mahone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Bah - that's hardly blackmail. Same type of spyware crap that's been going on for years.
Real blackmail would be, "We have your entire address book, and a list of the sites you just tried to access. Pay us $500 or we'll email everyone in the address book what sites you tried to access, and what time and what days you tried to access them." I.e. your wife/gf, your parents, your friends all find out what dirty websites you look at, and your boss finds out if you've been trying to do it on company time and/or with company equipment.
THAT'S blackmail. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Pretty much yea.
Imagine if your insurance picked up the tab for the Doctor AND you paid your co-pay. On the way out the door the doctor taps you on the shoulder and says "Hey for $50 more a year I'll give you a shot that will make you invincible from any STD. I call it Dr OneCare." That's pretty much what Microsoft is doing with their new security product. They could cure your problems but, nahhhh. $50 a year sounds much better. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Using the internet should require a liscense"
Yes. You're absolutely right. You're more right than you think. ;p - javiel, on 07/08/2008, -1/+9Why do people wonder why they get viruses and take it to circuit city or bestbuy to get them repaired and they dont even buy a antivirus and it happens again, Than they blame it on the certain "brand" of the computer. Its not the brand its the user.
- Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12So is this like a doctor that gives you an STD, then says they will give you the cure for $20?
- Ugli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7All this does, really, is illustrate... again... that computer insecurity has a lot more to do with the turnips behind the keyboard than it does any operating system software.
What a grand old time everyone has making fun of Windows because it's got more holes than Grandma's underpants. This could NEVER happen on linux... why, it makes you enter a PASSWORD before a virus can install.
If any of you think, for one femtosecond, that the same retard who downloads an application from some anonymous web site to get free porn won't happily plug in his root password so that the same web site can "check" his computer for God-knows-what after the linux "revolution" happens, I've got a laptop to sell you (ask for Amir).
You can pop all the warning dialog boxes or require all the passwords you want, the only way this will ever end is if the average user literally doesn't have the root (or admin) password required to install new software. I encourage you to hold your breath for the day that happens. - linuxwarz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I would use linux before ever touching anything made by apple. I enjoy using what ever parts I wan't in a computer.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5JamesGlover, you seriously underestimate the MO of large-scale operations that do this. They don't use your card number to transfer money, they produce new cards with your account information on them under false identities and use them at will.
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You hit the nail on the head. I dont use an AV on my machine(they are just such resource hogs) but I do run a scan every few weeks or if I suspect anything with Trend Micro's Damage clean up engine, I never have virus' and that is because I dont go around clicking things willy nilly(yes I said it).
- brentcore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6or sort of like a big OS developer releasing a product riddled with security holes, and then offering a yearly subscription plan for "unlimited" and "superior" protection
- rishimaharaj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@JamesGlover: It's probably possible, but victims are just too embarrassed to report it to the police.
- JamesGlover, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That's what I thought it'd do. One thing I don't understand about these 'pay up' viruses, is why it isn't easy to track down the virus writer, based on who owns the accounts. While I suppose any asking for credit cared details could just steal your card, others use bank transfers, which are surely traceable.
- javiel, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4lol experienced it? that didnt even cross my mind.
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3But first you have to be embarrassed about looking at porn for them to blackmail you. I have no such shame and pretty much anyone that is close to me knows that I own porn. So it's no big deal for me.
Though having a virus on your system does suck. - kram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am smelling my own farts
- dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2unfortunately that's not an easy thing to do with windows.
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3From what I have seen anti-virus programs rarely stop viruses. If they do it is because they are quarantining the potentially viral attachments that come into your email. If you get it from any way other then email usually the anti-virus software just says "Hey, you got something nasty. Let me try to re-... nope, one part of it is attached to the very important system file solitaire.log. You are SOL"
I find them too incredibly useless, system resource hogging, and expensive to bother using them. If I feel for some reason I do have a virus I just go to a few on-line scans and have them run through. It's free and so far has been more effective then most paid virus programs at actually removing the virus.
I also feel that many people think once they have an anti-virus program installed they don't need to be careful because "N0rt0nz will tell me if it's bad! Now time to download my free porn key generator!". You would not believe how many pissed off people I help out that are shocked when they hear that just because you have an anti-virus program installed they are not immune to viruses.... would be akin to thinking as long as you wear a condom you can screw whoever you want because you will never catch anything. - thedonquixote, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@Pogue
$500 isn't very much money. Also, no one I know would care what pron I looked at. How bout,
100 BILLION DOLLARS!!11!!1!!!! (or you get the bird flu) - dave98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2use a limited user account
problem solved - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Solution: Excellent anti-spyware software such as Windows Defender, Spybot S&D, or Ad-aware
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you are stupid enough to get a big virus or big piece of Spyware on your Windows computer, then you aren't that good of a PC user. It's so simple for me to avoid all of that stuff. And who wouldn't expect something bad to happen if you downloaded a program that supposedly gives access to premium porn sites...
What is this? 1996? - addakorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21991, Al Gore invented the internet.
1991 + 1 second, nude ascii image of nude female is transferred.
Of course predating this would be your local BBS, but this would be the first instance of widespread free porn. - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It does take time to learn how to avoid problems like getting a virus or trojan. Although there's a lot more information out there today about how to avoid viruses sometimes you don't really learn your lesson until you have one.
And not the wimpy type that just puts up an obscene message or something silly like that. No, you need to get one of the big ones that wipes out or destroys a hard drive with all of your irreplaceable, un-backed up files on it.
Though I've not fallen victim to something like that. Being in the tech support business I've seen some of the funniest and some of the nastiest viruses out there.
After having to explain to users over and over again about: how they may have gotten the virus, how to prevent it from happening again, good software to use to help prevent future infestations, places to stay away from, emails not to open, and the damage that can be done (especially in a corporate environment) it's hard not to automatically take that home with you and practice what you preach without even thinking about it.
But after having a few presentations wiped out, or having to plead to the bank or credit card company that you were not the person that emptied the account (or charged 1000 bucks to some guys pay pal account) they start to catch on pretty quick. Normally just telling them about how upset a company can get (and the risk of them loosing their job) over having their laptop infect the network (and the thousands of dollars worth of man hours that it will take to clean everything up) is enough to have them practice safer procedures.
Eventually people will learn. Heck, who knows, maybe one day they will teach the basics on how to protect yourself in school. - clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"ends up by "blackmailing" them into purchasing a program to clean the infection"
Welcome to 2002 guys! ***** like that has been around for a while. Virus' that do the same thing! Oh the horror that people are just now learning this and thinking it's NEW! Shock! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Glad I use Linux :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1'amir' hahaha
- Lyianis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@durrok
try using NOD32 (they have a free 30 trial), their incoming file scanning support is very good. saved me from many an unscrupulous website(my surfing habits are very good, but my interests and occasional guilty pleasures take me through some rather unsafe territory :P)
It scans all incoming net traffic, all incoming emails and any file when its run. Has a very small footprint, and doesn't cause any noticeable slow down. Its not extremely user friendly(aka requires some configuration for full protection/ease of use) but very powerful.
Still, programs weather free, pay or whatnot will never product a user from himself if they allow viral code onto their computer through ignorance. The basic advice i give anyone whose computer i work on(slightly shortened) "always read any confirm boxes and NEVER accept them unless you trust the site its from, and then your still not safe. - CloudStife618, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am having a similar problem as critic. I downloaded a keygen and now i have to buy spyfalcon cause my comp could be in critical condition. and there are 2 annoying popups. Can anyone help me get rid of this cause spybot search and destroy is not cutting it
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You reminded me of something I was thinking about the other day...

Oh well, doesn't work. (It was the ghostbusters logo) - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First off... this kinda Spyware already exists... WinFixer 2006... It promises the user to check their system for problems... while its checking the system its throwing Spyware on it. Which later pops up windows to have the user to Purchase WinFixer 2006 to remove the popups.
Second off... Anyone who is dumb enough to think the Magic Porn Fairy is going to drop free passwords in their email ... well they deserve to get owned by this Spyware.
And of course third... anyone who just double clicks on attachments in email and does not check the attachments for viruses... well their asking for it. - OficerMantimber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I already had a spyware program infection that did almost the same thing, SpyFalcon, and it's a total bitch to uninstall completely. The government should do something about these frauds, things they do are worse than just installing annoying software. These have to be illegal.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Windows Defender?.... Please ....
Micro$oft would not know Spyware if it was posted on a hugh sign on a side of a barn..... and even if they did
read it they would ignore it and hopefully it goes away just like with their other OS security reported isses. - alphaterminus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like I could care! I'm about to be rich. Some widow of Nigerian royalty is going to wire 2 mil to the bank account number I just sent her. Hell I'll be able to buy a new computer if it gets infected!
- angryredplanet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can't.... hold... breath.... much... longer... *passes out*
- OficerMantimber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you have SpyFalcon, the easiest way to have it cause the least damage is by disconnecting your connection, using rogue scan fix, after that using spybot, and then block all access to your LAN except your PC. The other option is too complicated to get into here but is freely available online, which involves changing some .dfl files to .ddd and run a program that completely eliminates it, but you have to go into the registry.
- kram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mmm mmm good
- kram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ever heard the term "Scraping the bottom of the gene pool"? It's really just a matter of degenerates preying on degenerates, it'll thin the herd.
- flaterates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Free porn? Wow!! When did this start?
- bonoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't give out your email! Seriously. They want to spam you and send you bad things. xnxx.com is the only place for my personal good times.
- dvdd127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am smelling legal trouble for the person(s) who wrote this software
