- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -17/+50I would say the same about the oh-so-clever usage of M$.
/starts the digg-down stopwatch - Xopl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Seriously, make it scroll vertically in green... instant Matrix.
Thinking of being in a NOC and watching that thing run gives me wood... uhhhhh...
Man, did I really say that? - aaronm67, on 10/12/2007, -15/+32because it's hard to take the comment seriously when the writer looks like a complete idiot
- oddball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11you're not on a network with only 1 machine are you?
- ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13A matrix style version would rock, being that is what it essentialy was in the movie.
- Irongeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hey, I never said I was much of a programmer or graphics guy. I put this out there so that it might inspire someone else to make a cool screen saver I could us. If you make one, email me and I would be glad to link to it and use it.
- tange1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9anyone else notice the irongeek.com being a bit strange as it moves? It flashs a bit..
- DalekoProvidek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Very cool app. I will defiantly be using this at the LAN tomorrow night."
Defiantly? Stickin' it to the man, eh? :-) - 000jr000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Pretty nifty, get some errors though that prevent it from replacing my current screensaver permanently.
In the past on a Linux system I used to use Driftnet ( http://ex-parrot.com/~chris/driftnet/ ) with Webcollage ( http://www.jwz.org/hacks/ ) to make a screensaver of images from web pages my co-workers were currently surfing ( hubs are fun! ).
I'd love links to any more fun screensavers along these lines (for Windows mostly) if anyone's come across them. - phragmunkee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13In Soviet Russia, screensavers watch you!
...couldn't help it.
Besides, wouldn't you see the packets of anything it was scamming and uploading? - databyss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Which is a program renamed to .scr
- Lazaryn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Crashes when trying to use dual monitor, text movement is jerky, contains garbage and gets artifacted.
Good idea badly executed. Wouldn't mind a more compatible version. - Annon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I had a similar problem, the website name just flickers in the top left corner. I let it set there for a while, and then there was some barely visible text overlapping itself in the center of the screen. Some IP addresses and then some unreadable stuff.
- ronintetsuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's exactly what I thought when I was reading this. If you could effectively create a short hand to represent what's going where and you had the time to teach it to yourself, you cold effectively 'read' your network at a glance. Just like in the movie.
I have no idea if that's even possible or not, I'm not a networking major. - oddball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7you are welcome to write one and submit it here for all of our approval.
- hipsterelitist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6not only does the irongeek watermark flash quite a bit on my rig, the rest of text seems to shake quite a bit.
- dhcmrlchtdj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i wrote a packet sniffer/matrix hybrid once, based on jwz's xmatrix code. it prints ip addresses and packet contents in the scrolling green letters. note since it's an xscreensaver hack, it's linux/unix only. see http://excelsi.org/code/xmatrix-net.html (sorry, digg insists on mangling it.)
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Any video clips of this in action?
- rfunches, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Doesn't work...website name flickers and that's it.
Had to upgrade to WinPcap 3.1 from 3.0 to get it to work (run-time error).
I have a feeling this was semi-hard-coded. No digg. - lankybutmacho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dear OS X users who are savvier than I:
Please make this. I suggest Quartz Composer.
Also, make it vertically scrolling and green as mentioned above.
Thanks. - manicarzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Same for me, flickering text slowly moving to bottom right of screen with an IP->LANIP then a ton of characters that don't appear to mean anything.
XP SP2
1600x1200
Nvidia 6600GT - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No kidding ... It comes with source, but what's to say that the compiled version is the same as the source code provided unless you compile it yourself ... which probably 0.001% of digg users can or will actually do.
- Tomholius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Screenshot: http://www.hyperevo.com/images/technology/screensaver.gif (dual screen) Looks pretty unreadable lol
- bryanpcola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3check out the screen shots, code to come!
http://www.darkpackets.com/packetvis.html - filecabinet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6it comes with the source code. you're just being paranoid.
- Schwingding, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Did ANYBODY bother to look at what this code really does? I simply cannot believe all of you folks have examined this software critically to be sure it isn't malicious. Just because your virus scanner doesn't have a problem with it does not mean it is safe to install. Neat, sure. Safe - how would you know?
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Blocked at work by Websense.
- johnthedebs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does this give anyone else a headache? I think if someone took that code and refined it a bit (and removed the irongeek plug) it would be much nicer. Very cool idea though.
- scooterfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Instead of bitching about what's wrong with it, use the code he provided and fix it or find someone who's willing to do so.
- bnoble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Totally awesome. Flickering URL action here too, and in COMIC SANS MS. Only a sysadmin could have such bad aesthetics. I'll stick with Ethereal/NMap/Newt/Look@LAN/Retina, thanks.
- eaglejm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dont do this at work or u could get in serious trouble.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wasn't doing ***** so I just re-compiled it from his sources and it started showing packets on my screen but all my traffic seems to be encrypted so it was just random crap and it didn't fly back and forth it was just all on top of itself in the middle of my screen.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't normaly complain about things like this, but this has been around for ages.... And it's not particularly brilliant, graphicly it's horrible, it's a cool idea, but not that well implemented
- Ben - Dave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks cool. Next step: make it green and make it scroll vertically.
- RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm just surprised no one has knocked it for Visual Basic yet =)
- caffiend, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can't get it to span right across both of my monitors. It'll do the left one but not the entire main monitor. Oh well.
- PirateX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great Work Man!!! Great site.. Keep up the good work.
If someone improves this code, I would love to receive it as well. - Khlept0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This would have been cool for the "Wall of Sheep"
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is really cool, except for the fact that it looks like *****. What's going on here? All the text in fricken comic sans in such wonderful colors as magenta, turqoise, and yellow are all piling up on eachother in a chaotic flickering.
- InternetUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Read the readme.txt
- matx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looking good, much nicer :P
Need this file hosted - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can this show cleartext or images passing through the network?
- cubikdice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1w00t, this is sweet, load up a torrent and preview it....wow...lol
- bryanpcola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@skerg - a few more days - I found that after i changed my main machine to xp65, that Winpcap doesnt support 64 bit. I will have to go to the other machine and polish the code.
I also plan to upload a 3d python traffic visualizer. more to come... - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dhcmrlchtdj: Sounds interesting, but I think I have to compile my own xscreensaver just to use it. Also, I think it needs root access. :(
- obtix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I followed every rule in the readme.
- khilari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good one
Looking forwarded to an enhancement for this... - evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same thing happens to me... everything is in the center of my 1280x768 laptop screen. Kind of weird looking.
- Yesterdayz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lower the speed, and the pcakets, that worked for me. :)
