- B111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hey Sony:
All your bases belong to us. Thanks for making DRM so ridiculous that it will be scraped because the public en-masse has seen the problems it causes.
Thanks again Sony. - DJS2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pros and Cons to buying your music
Pros: Support the label and artist
Hardcopy
Cons: Screw up your PC
Uncompatible with half of mp3's out there
Supports incompetence in large corporations
Pffff good job Sony.
- Bananas21ca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2SONY IS SOOOOOOO *****!
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All you guys bitching realize that 99.9% of the CD buying population have no idea what a root kit is will not even read this.

please. stop typing. - TheQwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sony spokesperson: "Most people don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care?"
dubya tee eff. You won't see me buying any Sony/BMG titles anytime soon. - NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Buying a CD to support your favorite artist: $20
Buying a program to look for rootkits on your computer: $15
Calling Microsoft to help you remove the rootkit, then get rejected: $45
Screaming at sony for being a bitch with DMCA: Priceless
There are somethings that money cant buy. For everything else, there is your common sense. - TheQwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if the EFF knows about this yet.
- HiddenForce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Write your member of Congress? Eh, it's that piece of crap DMCA that STARTED this kind of thing in the first place!
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is so completely over the top, I'm hoping this will wake people up as to what his happening with their rights to fair use something will be done now as opposed to later, when it will be too late.
And, as predicted, the lawyers have jumped in on this. The +5 intimidation Lawyers of Class action have started to collect cases.

Scroll down about halfway, first column on the left. - Bluejaye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All I know, is I definitely NOT buying a PS3 because of this.
- jdmatson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...next thing you know, we'll find out gator and weather bug and no good.
- Imusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great story, very informative!
- jdmatson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who else is doing things like this? I'm sure Sony BMG isn't the only one.
- Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah I'm shocked we havn't seen legal action on this yet too.
- abstractia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Write to your member of congress about this. While congress can't stop companies from using annoying DRM, they could pass a law that forces companies to fully disclose everything they're putting on your computer. Or they could pass a law making rootkits illegal.
- skizatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This type of kernel patching isn't even possible in 64-bit Windows. It's a shame it has to stick around for compatibility reasons in 32-bit Windows. (The reason it's not allowed in 64-bit Windows it that this type of stuff would have to be rewritten/recompiled for 64-bit anyway, so there's honestly no compatibility problems to worry about)
- DJS2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh I'm sure they do , half a cent on every cd , hehe .
I was trying to be generous but yeah I know what you mean. - tfedullo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this new drm scheme has/will really cost sony a great deal of money all to keep people from listening to their music on their ipods, i just say, good job sony, good job!
- selmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How does this stuff not meet the legal definition of illegal spyware? Shouldn't some class-action lawyers be smelling blood on this one?
- SadBeef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this was on the first page with a bunch of diggs and comments like 20 minutes ago, was'nt it? i was on the comments page and refreshed, and now it says 3 diggs and no comments...... O_o
- Chamunks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hard copy who actually uses real hard copy any more you don't actually still think artists make any money off anything but their concerts
- chazster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was so appalled by the news I thought maybe we should have a major effort to give out flyers outside major music stores urging buyers to avoid Sony CDs. But then reality set in. How will we explain this to them on a piece of paper? How many even listen to CDs in their computer?
I wonder if there are other spyware out there in CD and DVD that we aren't aware of yet. - jdmatson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oops.
ARE NO GOOD. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quote from sony:
All your computers belong to us. - SadBeef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0never mind... now its back to how it was..... that was strange.
- yardline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So why would anyone install this software? Just hold down shift on loading it and open it with your favorate player, or better yet ripper? I'll never buy another Sony CD.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's being done to get the general public to be aware of this type of stuff? I'm always looking for an orginization to join that makes this type of thing public and works to fight against it, but I just haven't found one yet. I got to the EFF site and it seemed like all they wanted was money when I want to provide real work.
- Live4Soccer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Keep up the good work, Mark!
- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This makes me WANT to steal music. If I buy the CD, it may screw up my computer, if I steal mp3s of it, I'm safe.
Wow. Sony really figured out a way to market piracy to non-pirates. - striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why are you guys running WinXP/2K in admin mode? Would the driver be able to install itself if you were running in limited user mode?"
What's limited user mode? Just kidding. I can't be arsed to log in and out during every install, i'm a windows users... if i wanted to do that i'd go nix... mmm root password required... actually, this is very off topic, but they are going to start copying linux in vista where every admin action requires u to enter your password... i bet there will be a "never ask me for my password again" button too... as for the topic, who has autoplay on anyway? I miss the days where u had to go d:setup . - znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell of SysInternals know their stuff and the proof of this is that they may well have just scalped Sony... if you don't have SysInternals in your bookmarks your a fool
- skizatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mark Russinovich, where would we be without you?
Anyone interested in Windows programming should check out the "Windows Internals" book that he co-authored. This guy knows more about Windows than the engineers that wrote the darn thing. - pring, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know what could happen if the following occured.
1. You installed the software from a Sony CD and how have their rootkit on your computer.
2. You install software from another record label and it installs a similar rootkit and driver as Sony's without you knowing.
I think this really has the potential to hose your system. - Imusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder how much rootkits were sneaked onto my computer while I was installing Sony SonicStage...

As I said in a similar thread, Sony spreading their DRM around is most likely a Good Thing. Once a worm spreads to exploit $sys$ and screws up everyone's computers, the general public will vent its anger at the Sony, **AA, and all the legislators who supported them.
Viva la revolucion. :p - kris2per, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree w/o Chriskzoo that almost all the ppl in world are uber cluseless to these threats!!! Including almost all of my family!!!
But even worst is explaining this to court!!! Ahuh!!! Sueing Sony will likely b difficult especially 4 the courts to understand!!!
Bravo Sony!!! Bravo!!!
I wonder if the also do ripkits are also available on those PSP updates? or the future PS3 which will b requiring ppl to b connected 2 the net!!! - hyperfocal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony must be forced to recall all of these CDs.
The rootkit is still on all the CDs being distributed and the DRM breaks 64bit XP and Vista. - damonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WWW.ALLOFMP3.COM!!!!!
- imdigginthis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How long do you think it will take management at Sony to figure out the music distribution business model has changed? As in, past tense. Are they really going to ruin their good name over it? Resisting this change is just plain futile.
- mr804, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1***** sony
- pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Holly friggin crap. WTF. This is SO messed up. if you read some of the posts you get a little more info. I hope the big media picks this up. This is totally unacceptable.
- buckdog05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is horrible. Sony needs to get their asses sued for this behavior.
- stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Again, just getting this in for the search spiders to find in conjunction with "root kit" and "sony"
I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SONY MUSIC PRODUCT EVER AGAIN. ***** YOU, SONY! - Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If they want to make you have a program to use their services I'm not crazy about it but I'll go along with it. I just can't stand any piece of software that doesn't uninstall. Get your ***** off my computer.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Probably doesn't affect Macs, so i don't care.
- t35t0r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Why are you guys running WinXP/2K in admin mode? Would the driver be able to install itself if you were running in limited user mode?
