- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Is this really a bad thing? Norton is a resource hog and its not even close to the best AV software...hell you can do better for free! Symantec has clouded the publics minds with its scare tactics so im all for this "glitch"
dugg - vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Good Nortons SUCKS.
And since it doesn't automatically remove NAV, just warns you about it, all you Microsoft is Evil Fanboys can keep you panties from getting in a knot. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If true, that's some major anti-trust violation there. Expect some lawsuits out of this."
If you didn't notice, there's ***BETA*** written all over the place on the microsoft site!
And I agree to most here, norton sucks and should be removed!!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If true, that's some major anti-trust violation there. Expect some lawsuits out of this.
- kday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The first thing Microsoft has ever done right......

Yes. It's bad for the fact that Microsoft is removing the paid product of a competitor. The fact that Norton may or may not be the "best" AV software, and the amount of of resources it uses are meaningless when you look at the fact that Microsoft is simply getting rid of it. Who's to stop them from doing it to google products, aim, winamp, etc.? They are all competitors of microsoft software. - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1spling...i was joking
- MonkeyOverlord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2About damn time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Norton puts all sorts of crap on your machine that may or may not be considered Rootkits or Malware. Mark Russinovich thinks so, Symantec disagrees. - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I digg, I don't use either but one effectively killing off the other is more than welcome ;)
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, the MS Fanbois are out in force tonight. Must be a full moon.
- _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't even have to read the article - I laughed out loud just from reading the title & description. I think that deserves a digg.
- Kissitfatty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had this problem too, and what happend was it would say problem with norton and no joke i would get 100 pop ups in a row telling me to fix it, i fixed the problem but norton said i didnt so i had 200 popups (not an overstatement i would click out of one and 5 poped out) and it would slow my pc down soo much that you coultnd do anything, i put it in safe mode and it wouldtn let me do the uninstall, long story short praise the lord for linux live cds and death to norton!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the best thing nortons ever came out with was the symantec removal utility.
it is such an amzingly good product that i guess microsoft wanted to copy it. - bailmark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha stupid norton
- ak2ok, on 06/07/2008, -0/+0Microsoft makes the windows. right? theres no doublts about that! Then why not get Microsoft to remove all your viruses, and other windows problems?
Why do people download thirt part virus scanners, anti spywares and adware removers? Because Untill now, Microsoft did not have a proper anti virus program. But now they do, and its called Live OneCare!!
Third party virus scanners like AVG and norton are viruses themselves, there i said it!
but heres why!
think about this, if our world does not have any viruses, then Norton and AVG and most definately going out of business, and they wouldn't like that, would they? Exactly now you are thinking.
Only Microsoft Know how to fix their windows problems, no other third party can do better than microsoft!
Its time to remove you norton and avg and download Live one care. But wait! Its not east to remove Norton or avg from your computer, i wonder why? because they are viruses themselves. One you get them, they never want to leave you!
Download Microsoft Live OneCare now and it will help you remove norton and avg too, so what are you waiting for? its now or never, so do it now!
Get Microsoft Live OneCare now, full version, free for 90 days at http://www.kamrock.net/liveone.htm - gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"oh... and was free from my University for being a student."
O RLY? AVG, ClamWin, and avast! are free for me too. All I have to do is (at the VERY least, with avast) be a non-commercial home user. ClamWin, from what I see, is completely free (and I just clicked their site's ads to keep it that way!).
You won't always be a student, and when you graduate or leave, Symantec will just make a new version with more bloat and a higher price you'll have to pay. Don't get pwn3d (like Symantec just did!) by big business. - charlene89, on 11/30/2007, -0/+0I'd remove Norton myself as it is a crap and not a decent security solution... too overhyped. and tough to operate. A good antivirus and antispyware http://xoftspyantispyware.blogspot.com solution by XoftSpy or they sophisticated competitors like Webroot http://spysweeper-download.blogspot.com should make anyone's online life safer :)
- 123Mercy, on 01/28/2009, -0/+0Clear your computer of all the same bugs.
When you are searching for antispyware there is one that you can always depend on, it’s called Search-and-destroy Antispyware. The antispyware solution from Search-and-destroy can provide you with a scan that can find and clear your computer of all the same bugs that the more expensive scans can a much lower price. You can’t beat that, keep your computer running great for less. Visit their site at http://www.Search-and-destroy.com to download this scan and get all the benefits it has to offer. If you’re like me, it will be the best decision you made in a long time. - cikrohani129, on 03/10/2009, -0/+0Spyware and adware has become as intrusive, disruptive, and damaging as your common virus, with the only difference being the payload of ads. Why it hasn't become illegal yet, I'll never know.Find the free powerfull tools for remove malware, spyware, virus at
http://SpywareRemovalTools.notlong.com - Truegod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know if it steals passwords, but it defiantly steals resources... Removing it is almost doing people a favor.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This reminds me how ***** Norton is.
I had the Bagle/Winupd worm awhile back. Norton did nothing about it (cause my 90-day trial thing that Dell gave me expired, redering Norton useless but still a resource hog). McAfee couldn't do anything. Wanna know what removed it? AVG Free.
***** Norton. ***** Norton right in the ear.
Just because something is popular doesn't mean that it's worth your time & money. - Tonye5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I concur, this should be considered a public service by Microsoft.
- av1d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, since nortons is probably spyware to begin with, who cares. Get a real virii scanner, if you're stupid enough to need one in the first place. People who get infected deserve it 99.999999999999999999999999% of the time.
- J_Omega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ billyboobs34 -- using the corporate edition on a single machine hasn't given me those 60-70% CPU issues for hours on end every day.
Full scan CAN do that - if I set it to high priority, but why would I do that?
If you've a server controlling the scans... such is life. I have the ability to setup scan times whenever I want. As it is, I set it to never full-scan automatically - I do that manually.
I just leave real-time scanning left on and never notice bloat/hogging. /shrug - CluelessTroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People still pay $$$ for anti-virus applications?
http://free.grisoft.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you think Norton is all flowers then after you install it check out your TCP/IP stack (if you even know how)
The corporate version doesn't do this, but instead the corporate version will scan your drive in the background for 3 hours with 60-70% CPU usage for the entire time (with no option on the server to scan every other day or similar interval). I see/use/fix these machines every single day. Using symantec was not my idea but I have to work with it since my company paid for it. What a waste....
I fully agree with it being flagged by MS antispyware. - jmaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is awesome. While fixing my friend's and coworker's computers, I have run into Norton as the problem countless times.
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"You know what, I think I'll download MS's Antispyware software right now, just because of that. I'll put it on my mom's computer too-- She has Norton. ;)"
The big problem there:
"When Microsoft Anti-Spyware users remove the flagged Norton file as prompted, Symantec's product gets corrupted and no longer protects the user's machine. The Norton user then has to go through the Windows registry and delete multiple entries (registry editing is always a dicey affair that can quickly hose a system if the user doesn't know what he or she is doing) so that the program can be completely removed and re-installed."
It doesn't quite fully remove it, and if you want all traces of teh Norton off, you'd have to do some brave registry-key deletions. Or hope their uninstall still works as advertised.
No need to add problems to mom's life. Remove Norton first, then add buggy Anti-Spyware Beta thingy. Or not. Depends on how much you're joking. ;) - DarkSenay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good riddance, the first thing i do when i see a computer with norton on it is remove it.
- coffeestoned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's about time Nortons was recognized for what it is a big program that's way too intrusive.
- DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Servers Symantec right for pulling pretty much exactly the same stunt last month on Spybot Search and Destroy!
- thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0finally... a way to get rid of it other than formatting the drive!
- davidjunit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah, Norton junk sucks. I told my father not to pay for it the next time his subscription is up. That software has a mind of its own, it can't be disabled unless it's completely uninstalled. It will run an endless virus scan on his computer; I swear it said it scanned for 56 hours straight one time but I could've possibly been under the influence of alcohol when I read that screen, it may have been 5 or 6 hours, but yes, while the computer is sitting idle it will actually just scan that long until it's stopped. Isn't that kind of continuous activity harmful to your hard drive?
I've found Norton to report "errors" because you haven't used certain parts of their software in a long period of time. It basically attempts to trick you into using the software: '1 error found in virus scan: OMG U HAVNT USED HOUR SOFTWAER IN FOREVARS USE IT NAO! CLICK TIHS BUTON!'
Norton = overzealous crap. KILL IT, Microsoft FTW - 0zzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Woops. I deleted it, GAWD DANG IT
- J_Omega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh... and was free from my University for being a student.
- J_Omega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Norton is bloat? : its sitting at 30 MB constantly.
Norton hogs CPU cycles? : its used 57 secs in the past 7+ hours uptime.
fyi - Using the "corporate" Full version : 10.0.2.2001
No clue about the "Home" or "Full blown extra options all out" versions (that I have seen hog system resources and pop up at annoying times - like during fullscreen gaming.) This thing I have running seems pretty unintrusive though. /shrug - kazsymonds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally anti spyware that detects the real bad guy
- evilware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's norton it explains all why MS would get confused. Norton ain't a virus protection it is a virus.
- utch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally something that can get rid of norton! It so hard to get it completely off a system!
AVG is nice and free and doesn't hog all of your system resources - Indrek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reported as inaccurate. Title should read "MS Anti-Spyware Detecting Norton Anti-Virus"
Otherwise, dugg, because the concept is funny enough, although blatantly overexaggerated here. - WDot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know what, I think I'll download MS's Antispyware software right now, just because of that. I'll put it on my mom's computer too-- She has Norton. ;)
- digigal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny thing is I've been calling Norton a virus for a few years now. I'm glad to see Microsoft agrees with me.
- Rickard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anti-anti-virus? Sweet
- aussiehuw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's hard to disagree with MS Anti-Spyware's assessment of Norton.
Btw zetsurin, I'm not an MS fanboi (hell, with the exception of Internet Explorer 6.1 installed in WINE for compatibility testing I don't use a single MS product). Norton just plain ***** sucks. - slorocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Norton didn't fix there problem with rootkitting norton protect files in system works 2003 and MS Defender doesn't find this problem let alone fix it. I couldn't even find a patch for this problem on symantec's ftp server, After downloading updates from system works and then running rootkit reavealer Its still there and MS defender wont pick it up. Sorry to rant off subject but its still about MS defender and symantec.
- 4tygames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would just seriously avoid McAfee and Norton all together. There are plenty of great antivirus programs (for me, eTrust, but that ClamWin sounds really interesting and beats paying $20 a year for a software application) out there, but people use Norton and McAfee just like they use IE.
