- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ryan VM beats this hands down.
http://ryanvm.msfn.org/
I already made a Service Pack 2 slipstream, then I apply Ryan VMs patcher (works great). Then I tweak the options by using nLite ( http://www.nliteos.com/ ).
This makes for a completely updated Windows (slip-streamed, no second CD required, no patching the system after install, or any of that BS) - with very custom options that not only speed up install, but also sets up XP in a much better default manner than Microsoft's default settings.
As a final touch, I create a Documents and Settings folder on the second partition of the hard drive, a folder name for the user ( d:Documents and SettingsUsername ) and right-click drag the Application Data folder, My Documents folder and Desktop into the new folder. This makes sure that in the event of the BadThing(tm) happening - almost all personal files and settings are saved, and one quick XP re-install later - and everything is as it was before, personal files and settings included. - spudwrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Use AutoPatcher (www.autopatcher.com) to update your system(s). It can bring a completely unpatched system to within a few minor patches of the absolute latest with just one download. Plus, it's free, they update every month and they include a number of the best official and third-party add-ons.
Current versions available:
AutoPatcher for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (32-bit) - December 2005
AutoPatcher for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (32-bit) - December 2005
AutoPatcher for Windows XP x64 Edition (Beta) - December 2005
AutoPatcher for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (32-bit) - December 2005 - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"anyone got a link to ISOs of the hacked windows cd's that include sp2+other updates so u can just do it as a single install? i remmember a while back someone posted a tutorial how to make one yourself, but that is rather time intensive... was wondering if anyone had some already made."
Yes, but you only have to do it once (SP2, current patches, custom options). Then when you install - you Windows Update, download the whole 3 (now smaller) patches, and presto - you are done.
Get service pack 2 here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
Here is info on how to slipstream SP2: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp
and/or here:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=slipstream+service+pack+2&btnG=Google+Search
OR, just download a pirate copy of XP SP2. I prefer to slipstream it myself so I know it is clean, but whatever suits you. Getting a pirate copy would be much faster and easier. But either way - once you have an XP SP2 - burn it and keep it as a "standard" to fall back on or to use with updates/tweak programs that have yet to come out : )
With that done, we need to update it further.
Get the rest here: http://ryanvm.msfn.org/
Now all updates are applied, and you have an XP install that is very current.
Then get the ultimate in Windows customization: http://www.nliteos.com/
Change default options (set all folders to detailed view, disable the search dog, so on and so forth). If you are so inclined, you can remove unnecessary languages and reduce the XP ISO size by HALF. Then you can *remove* the search dog and other unnecessary features, further reducing its ISO and install size. nLite also has many options for making XP much faster by default (turn indexing off by default, don't read-timestamp files, etc).
You only have to do it once.
Read my above first post regarding RyanVM, or just go to the sites. - ncbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this iso has only two updates. who cares?
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"will save me hours on just the little tweaks."
People find that they settle into their OS and get all the tweaks and settings right after a hours setting it up - or after a few days/weeks of casually changing things as they get to them.
With nLite, you can have an XP install that is up to date with the absolute latest Microsoft patches, has all unnecessary features removed, is HALF THE SIZE - on the CD and almost half the size once installed - and is noticeably faster (no time-stamp for every file accessed, TCP/IP limit of 10 removed (changed to 100 for instance), etc.
I wonder how many people with SP2 wonder why all their p2p applications are so slow to download files.
Before I found nLite, I found some of my favorite Linux distro's to be noticeably faster in many areas. After using nLite - the speed difference is much less.
I can't sing the praise of nLite enough. I've donated money to the project myself. Twice. - aletornw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2does the auto-patchers work on a spanish windows?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there is a trixie script for ie and greasemonkey script for firefox that get arround the windows update protection. There is also a patched file called legitcontroll or something like that.you cann get on torrents that works. Or leave on auto updates works too, If you dont mind being slightly late on patches and worried about the slew of info microsoft harvests everywindows update there is also http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/
works in firefox :) running out of reasons to keep a shortcut to ie
and i also like nlite and ryanvm
made my first nlite cd a few days ago.. tweaking and testing using vmware.. but it is mighty cool.. will save me hours on just the little tweaks. - shaft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i wonder if they have an iso with all the updates on it ?
- Mike_N, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea, KB912919 witch is one of the two patches was the WMF patch released on Jan-5th... So, it would be wise to use nlite to slipstream that into yer custom XP disc, along with SP2 and what not... :)
- framitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a near total waste. ONLY the most recent TWO updates are on the CD. Everyone should visit the site and leave feedback demanding an ISO with all of the updates, NOT just the latest two.
1 CD WASTED!
Investigating nLite, thanks for the reminder chrono13 (2) - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1autopatcher. or in my case, just sp2 no hotfixes.
- evilpig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait, this is lame
This ISO-9660 CD image file contains all security and critical updates for Windows released on Windows Update on January 5th and January 10th, 2006. This does not contain security updates for other Microsoft products. - slurpeyatari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow i'm glad microsoft finally got around to finding this new fangled ISO thingamabobber jiggaroo
- Tordenflesk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mond: 10 minute's to long for you? You're a busy one aren't you? :P
- PCBuckman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes on second thought the ISO file seems like a waste. It only includes the most recent patch and it has the patch for lots of MS Operating Systems. The only one the consumer needs is XP. Useless to download fixes for Windows Server, Itanium, XP 64, etc. Just follow chrono13 suggestions and everything will be good.
- Koskun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, totally useless. You can get all updates, security/critical, optional, and drivers, with or without having a valid copy of Windows.
- Sacrifusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not that one would need to know but where have you found these 3rd party sites?
- brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"not that one would need to know but where have you found these 3rd party sites?"
There's this thing, called Google...
;) - shaft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i always just installed the cracked version of xp pro, then change my product key to one that isnt blacklisted, then install sp2, then apply the wga .dll to get the updates.
- shaft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://ryanvm.msfn.org/ I like this site
- Viremia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No thanks. nLite and RyanVM for me.
no Digg - ianneub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0chrono13 is right, http://ryanvm.msfn.org/ is way better.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome, but it does need the newest fixes!
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone have a MD5 sum for the ISO? Just want to compair mine to make sure it's okay.
- Mond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great tips chrono13! i'll give it a try when i get home from work
- Mike_N, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Was Jan-5th when they patched the WMF Exploit? If so, might be worth having...
- Jaan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So why is this better than just changing the key by "registering by phone"?
- oddstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is lame!
Try Autopatcher instead :)

Visit it next week after Patch Tuesday. - evilpig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thanks :)
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Or, one could just install a Linux distro that automatically partitions a /home directory and call it good.
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -4/+035 diggs in 6hrs? *yawn*
It deserves way more than that!
