- BlackSheepx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+53Agreed. "OHHH A .COM FILE! *open* THIS MUST BE SOMETHIN' GOOD!"
- toastgodsupreme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+53Please, for the love of god, someone write an IM virus that destroys these people's computers after a certain period of time. It's the only way they'll ever learn.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36Unless they infected their computer at work, in which case a permanent goatse background ought to do it.
- SnowSurfns, on 10/12/2007, -7/+39Hey look at this super cool awesome fantastic picture of me and my girlfriends!!!?!?!?!!!11111

"Oh well this looks legit, I guess i'll click it..."
"dum dum do WTF!?! This thing infected my computer with male porn its popping up all over the screen. Oh potatoes the start and reset button don't work, have to pull plug, can't reach hand behind desk with emo bracelets on it....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!"
"Omg mom is coming, I told her I was just checking my myspace, oh crap...."
to be continued... - kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30You're not talking about the AOL Browser that AOL Instant Messenger Triton forces upon install, are you? ;-)
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19someone should seriously make a comic about computer noobs.
- bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17If this is anything like the "Safety Dance", I'm steering clear.
You can browse if you wanna.
You can leave IE behind - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Ha... HA... HAHAHAHAHAHH!! Look at the extension?!?!?!? Most people don't know what an extension is. (which isn't helped by the fact that Windows obscures them by default)
- pornel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Yeah. When I've read virus description I thought "Hey! But IE is preinstalled already!"
- SnowSurfns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I was thinking of strongbad the whole time i was writing that.... just imagining the voice lol
- pentomino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10We can browse if we want to, we can leave our friends behind, / 'cause our friends don't browse and if they don't browse, then they're no friends of mine.
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I wish there was a virus that put linux on the guy's computer since he proved that he really needs the security of it.
- cr4z3d, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13someone should really write a virus that installs firefox and makes it the default browser..
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I got one once that was kind-of sneaky:
rofl is this you: http://www.*****.com/emailpic?email=kfjasdlfjsdf@dfjlasdjfasd.com
Sneaky.
Just read the description of this thing - it sounds very funny. And I'm very disappointed I can't run it on my Mac, will someone please port it over? :P - saleens281, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7digerati: that doesn't apply to a link from an IM window...
- Aleks, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Safety's not guaranteed :)
http://timetraveler.ytmnd.com/ - rickpable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wouldn't really be a virus, then...more like a blessing.
- DigDugDigger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Please, someone do some good and write a virus that replaces a idiot with a person with common sense so we can stop reading about these things.
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7And give Firefox a bad name? People will start seeing Firefox as spyware and they'll hate it.
- aquafinality, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Ramibotros, not sure I see the connection..?
- rickpable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm more worried about getting IMs from friends with links to those damn videos that make you ***** your pants.
- fartingbob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Do we get a free search for the best nigerian royals pleading to give you $100,000 in exchange for carrying their money for a while?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Don't worry mate, that guy just spams his own articles all over Digg. Just click onto his profile to see.
- atelophobee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5plz stop spamming your site. it won't make the front page, deal.
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just block those bastards
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4which bastards? :)
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8by default windows hides the extension for known filetypes; how to disable that:
- In Windows Explorer click Tools | Folder Options.
- On the Folder Options window, click the View tab. In the Advanced Settings group uncheck:
[ ] Hide extensions for known file types
- Click Apply | OK. Close Windows Explorer. - silenceHR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5amen to that
- koolaide, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Most people (including myself once) think that .com files are actually links to websites. Good thing I use Firefox, which doesn't auto download it by default :)
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3.com files are executables. They're back from the MS-DOS days before .exe files existed.
- Jams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Free Smilies anyone?
Seriously, how annoying are those ads? - Sheco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Let's just help him by reporting all his articles as lame, just as him :)
- hass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've always wondered why no one has done this. It would be even better if it was done through an IE exploit.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So your family is a bunch of morons who click .com files on IM? Congrats.
- DenZ88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love sarcasm. Good read.
- Portfolioso, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5You have to be a noob to get an IM worm. The link is so retarded - it's like http://fake.com/file.com or file.pif. Don't people look at the extension? If it ends in /file.com, its not the domain name, its a file - and it's executable.
I think IE fixed the com and pifs from executing automatically, but you'll always get noobs clicking yes or open. - SirRobin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"someone should seriously make a comic about computer noobs."
You should check out BOFH. - karch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1kodek: I think he knew that.
- karch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, that is effin' smart
hiding the .com in the email.. - richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I never noticed before that .com files could be linked to to masquerade as websites... that is sneaky! Why oh why did IM companies ever allow file sharing!
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I had to help with some person who filled a machine with spyware (warez sites and IE just don't mix). What's worse was it wasn't his machine. It was someone's laptop he had borrowed.
- Samurailink3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love IE!! I just love getting hijacked, spyware infested, and having viruses downloaded to my pc every time I go browse the web!!
Viva La FireFox. - serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As soon as I saw this headline, I thought of the song "Safety Dance". Am I the only one? Uh... yeah, I'm really weird!
- Jams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most people (including myself once) think that .com files are actually links to websites. Good thing I use Firefox, which doesn't auto download it by default :)
Neither does IE - Alexius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ha' good read indeed. I haven't got hijacked since some time.
- mp817, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I got a link from friend who I hadnt talked to in at least three years. I figured..."Hmm why would this girl who hasn't talked to me in three years want me to see her 'new myspace pics from the prom' at www.myspace.com/username.zip (YES DOT ZIP)?
- turing, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5i cannot belive there are this many comments and i'm the first one to point out the most obvious solution:
GAIM!
http://gaim.sf.net
It's more functional than the official clients anyways. (Be sure to check out the plugins). And then you will never have to worry about IM worms ever again.
edit>> i only glanced quickly at the article, and now I realize that perhaps this particular exploit does not exploit a vulnerability in the IM software. in any case, there are other IM worms that do exploit flaws (AIM is a notable example...their official client is always succumbing to buffer overflows and nasty things). - aquafinality, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2"You're not talking about the AOL Browser that AOL Instant Messenger Triton forces upon install, are you? ;-)"
Nope, digging into the whois for the demoplanet site seems to reveal the people behind it are from out way out East. Course theyre probably fake dets anyway ;) - zeeone, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4This is so awesome! More power to this browser and to whoever created it!
- hangtown, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Idiot - please smack yourself for even saying that, even as a joke. One of the many reasons I don't let family members get windows machines anymore is because they wind up with this crap on their computers.
