- UberNick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Yep, he's pretty much dead on. Back in high school, people used to attach these locks to the desks (for some reason). With nothing better to do in class over the years, I probably collected over a hundred.
There's a few more tricks to narrowing down the possibilities. One is if you find the lock open, hold the clasp in locked position and rotate the dial counterclockwise. The dial will catch, causing the clasp to rise, at (I believe) 6 numbers before the FIRST number in the combination. That will narrow the possibilities down to under 10. And, in my experience, the difference between the first and second number (and the second and third number) is always 6 or more. That'll help narrow down the possibilites by about a third.
Also, if you come across a Masterlock with an extra key-hole in the back, this technique won't work. And it doesn't apply to non-masterlock brands like American. Anyone have more info on these?
