- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -16/+75unless you hacked into that server to gain access to the file...
- lib24, on 10/12/2007, -4/+53I'm already a hacker guy.. look:
1. I can check my aol email in under 30 seconds
2. I know how to upload pictures to myspace
3. I upload 10 articles a day to digg
4. I am known on the web as leEtHaXoR - xenixninja, on 11/08/2007, -8/+47@ tinker123
So if I have to read to become, let us say, a programmer, I'm not a programmer?
Now I understand, that's why we have schools, so we can become something. - montrey, on 11/08/2007, -3/+39step 1: learn multiple programming languages. .. *****.

- s1rk3ls, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17"There is another group of people who loudly call themselves hackers, but aren't. These are people (mainly adolescent males) who get a kick out of breaking into computers and phreaking the phone system. Real hackers call these people 'crackers' and want nothing to do with them. Real hackers mostly think crackers are lazy, irresponsible, and not very bright, and object that being able to break security doesn't make you a hacker any more than being able to hotwire cars makes you an automotive engineer. Unfortunately, many journalists and writers have been fooled into using the word 'hacker' to describe crackers; this irritates real hackers no end."
I used to be one of those... but now I've seen the light and changed my ways. I've accepted a true hacker lifestyle and tell others every day to "be a hacker, not a cracker" I often get funny looks, and have even had things thrown at me!
I know if you really want to change, you can! You'll be glad you did.

Actually, I think the change from "cracker" to "hacker" according to the description on this site is similar to puberty... It's a transitional phase most immature people go through at some point where they grow up and become more responsible adults. However, there are always those who are perpetually stuck in "l33t puberty" well into their 30's. It's sad, really. - jiminoc, on 11/08/2007, -1/+15ok super nerds, chill out
I believe it was meant as a joke - Iffrat, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18unless you boot from C: then you cant format C: ... and if its xp then its command not DOS
- catfish182, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Hack a gibson....THEN......you can call yourself a hacker...
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10if you're just talking about procedural languages you can learn the syntax for C, C++, C#, Java, PHP, and Perl (to a lesser extent) in no time. After that you have to practice using the libraries for each language you want to know. Learning a new procedural language isn't hard if there's good documentation on the libraries you're using.
I'm not talking about mastering any of them, I'm just talking about learning the basics. - GrahamStw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8No - it is how to be a hacker. Did you read the article?
He covers the cracker/hacker misnomer quite thoroughly. - jiminoc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14lol props for this
Q:
I'm having problems with my Windows software. Will you help me?
A:
Yes. Go to a DOS prompt and type "format c:". Any problems you are experiencing will cease within a few minutes. - bigkm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8and Network Protocols

Well you shouldn't be a hacker. Isn't that the point of reading a "HOWTO"... - jamend, on 11/08/2007, -8/+14tinker123 is right, you can't be taught how to be a hacker. The point of hacking is to think outside the box, use systems in an undocumented/unspecified way, do that which hasn't been done before, etc...

- MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6When articles like this make the front page of Digg, I really wonder what the average age of the users are here.
- GrahamStw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5FFS... Never mind apparently no one else actually read it either.
- mhuggins, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Yeah, I always got made fun of for wanting to be like Acid Burn :(

GET OVER IT
Digg is starting to become mediocre. - robohoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Damn, just learn how to code.
There, done. Boom. - CardinalFang, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3Hackers gotta start somewhere. Reading something sounds like a good start.

2. No problem should ever have to be solved twice. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hacking is a mindset, you don't "learn" to be a hacker, you can learn processes and procedures used by hackers, but to truly become a hacker you must acquire that mindset.
- DarkPenguin, on 11/08/2007, -4/+6jamend has the right idea. The idea is to think outside the box. Stuff like that just can't be taught, you have to learn it for yourself.
I have a feeling jamend was dugg down because digg users did not want to know the real truth, because it sounds like it is too hard or would take too long.
just my 2c... - Smoove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ESR is a dumbass. Marked the article as lame, only because there's no way to mark the glory hound HIMSELF as lame.
- zipzot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...and you took the time to write a diatribe on how bad a post this was when you could of been developing a self-portrait of yourself sucking Linus Torvalds left tit in ASCII art...that would of really impressed us all.
- dxbmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, it just means your security policy at work is *****
- donkeyking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just want to suck on Acid Burns *****.
- DarthFredd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm with you on this. Reading an article on being seen as a desired stereotype (hacker, goth, "super cool", whatever) is cheating yourself on individuality. And the very "hacker mindset" is all about individuality and doing your own thing.
Might be a good article for highschool kids which are insecure about their identity. - notfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wizard Pills.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've seen this article before, and in my opinion it's good in the sense that it portrays that to be a hacker you don't need to just know some "master password" that fits anywhere, or follow one technique all the time. It's all about expanding your curiosity in new areas, and creating things, not destroying them. For people that don't know this, it definately sets them on the right track.
- OficerMantimber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Duplicate story, same article was posted around a month ago. The article itself is pretty dumb, too (apparently there are arbitrary rules one must follow).
- viriiman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1(Sorry, first time doing this)
