- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -1/+185"In this sense, people like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were all hackers"
since when is Steve Jobs a hacker? I thought Woz did all the work? - MV559er, on 11/08/2007, -3/+115A real hacker can crack a 256-bit cipher with a gun to his head and whilst simultaneously receiving some serious oral under the table.
- torrzilla, on 11/08/2007, -1/+78Does this mean that my Gibson has been safe this whole time?
- Glass_Onion, on 11/10/2007, -9/+63HACK THE PLANET!
- aspec, on 11/08/2007, -1/+54Maybe... but I think 95% of those blackhats are what we like to call "script kiddies".
- raynar, on 11/08/2007, -2/+53My company doesnt get hacked. We have a security guard in our server room, monitoring everything in 3D.
- GyroTech, on 11/09/2007, -2/+46I logged in just to say exactly that - since you said it already I'm just gonna digg you the hell up!!
- chingy1788, on 11/08/2007, -2/+41Ever guessed some one else's password for his/her email account?
now you're a cracker and should be put in jail
/jokes - gnick, on 11/09/2007, -0/+37I just hacked my toast with some peanut butter. I'm a breakfast hacker.

- WarrenWhitlock, on 11/08/2007, -0/+30I loved the term before the media got ahold of it. Hacking is not good or bad, and there is no better word to describe getting inside the guts of a system.
We need good hackers. And should encourage people to exploit things as long as they don't cause harm. - Vich, on 11/08/2007, -5/+32Thanks to the media, the word "hacker" has gotten a bad reputation
... and thanks to digg, the word "hacking" can be used to describe someone doing anything mildly out of the ordinary with any product. - reddikilowatt, on 11/08/2007, -1/+26This article sucks. The way hackers work is, you feed them junk food, they convert the chemical energy into electrical and mechanical energy. Then you hang some shiny object (such as an "Unbreakable" cypher) in front of them, but just out of reach, and give them an infinite time factor in which to acquire the shiny object. While they have the unique ability to obsess about acquisition to the point of closing out the rest of the world, they tend to be somewhat inefficient at the conversion, so expect a lot of waste products.
- m4csrgh3yk3v, on 11/08/2007, -1/+26as long as the key is:

...no problem - BG5954729, on 11/08/2007, -0/+21Ditto.. FTA: "Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple and pioneer hacker". Unbelievable.....
- MerryMortician, on 11/07/2007, -2/+18no mention of script kiddies? they call them newbies on howstuffworks?
- mikehill33, on 11/08/2007, -0/+16This article sucks. Don't bother. Send this link to your grandmother, since she will be the only one who uses this crappy site.
- c0ldfusi0n, on 11/08/2007, -0/+16And left millions wrongfully thinking someone loved them.
- InsaneMachine, on 11/08/2007, -2/+16No you didn't, you just think you hacked it, al gore hacked it long before you.
- 89vision, on 11/08/2007, -3/+16I just hacked the planet
- basic0, on 11/09/2007, -0/+12Steve hacks people. That's why he and Woz were so successful together.
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -0/+12this is wank. reads like some kids school project.
- MikeonTV, on 11/07/2007, -0/+11Where did you get that info? ohhh yeah from the first paragraph of the ***** article!
- Ladadadada, on 11/08/2007, -0/+11I want that 10 minutes of my life back.
- KirbyMeister, on 11/08/2007, -0/+11Article talks alot about hackers, but they forgot about those anonymous Hackers On Steroids from secret websites that like to hack myspace accounts and get truely epic lulz by messing with online children's games like Habbo Hotel.
- GyroTech, on 11/08/2007, -1/+11Not really. Jobs never really pioneered any techniques or devices of his own. I see him as essentially the first script kiddie. Not to say he wasn't talented in his own right, you got to have at least some smarts to put a box together. Once the box details were out, it doesn't take as much ingenuity as ol' Captain Crunch to simply duplicate the work.
- mattottam, on 09/29/2009, -0/+9yea, this article blew. I at least got a good laugh from:
"Psychologist Marc Rogers says there are several subgroups of hackers -- newbies, cyberpunks, coders and cyber terrorists." - thedragon4453, on 11/08/2007, -0/+8if its across state lines. Dude, you can't hack a gibson across state lines.
- johnkelsen, on 11/08/2007, -1/+9List of things to blame for stuff:
Media
George Bush
Global Warming
Islam
Christ[i]ans
You scored 2/5. Sorry, you fail. - c0ldfusi0n, on 11/07/2007, -0/+7But is your Trash file protected??
- ElectricDoodie, on 11/11/2007, -2/+9I can't get viruses, nor can I get hacked; I have Norton AntiVirus.
/sarcasm - Pritchard, on 11/08/2007, -0/+7Is your password, "GOD"?
- RadicalEdward, on 11/08/2007, -2/+8The world needs script kiddies, who else are we gonna make fun of when they say their a l337 H@x0r?
- ettin, on 11/08/2007, -2/+8I just hacked your daughter out of her panties.
- FluffyWolf, on 11/08/2007, -3/+8They are well written, and thus dugg. (But the same thing could be said with many wikipedia pages too and they are not submitted to digg...so it's not a general rule =)
- bagboyrebel, on 11/08/2007, -1/+6hacker != a hack
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -1/+6That movie is why I got into hacking in first place. So far, very disappointed.
- SinisterDexter, on 11/07/2007, -1/+5Beyond 'Computer Hackers' there are also "Hardware Hackers" and "Gadget Hackers" the website www.hackaday.com shows the difference. Not everyone that calls themselves a 'Hacker' sits in front of a computer and tries to circumvent internet security.
- SniperX, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4well I certainly would rather be called a hacker than a tinker.. Imagine the what you'd call a lame tinker, a tinker-bell?
see what i did there? - rarson, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4Yeah, but to a hacker, "newbies" are entirely different from "script kiddies." Everyone has to start out somewhere, so "newbie" isn't necessarily a derogatory term (unless you're one of those ***** hackers that never wants to help anyone out and just wants to talk about how elite you are). Whereas, "script kiddies" usually do what they do for years, and never progress. A script kiddie isn't usually new, they usually just stopped learning once they realized they could play around with a program. Definitely a derogatory term.
- merreborn, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4They blow up friggin' vans, man! I've seen the video!
- missingnoh4x, on 11/10/2007, -0/+4Unneeded apostrophe.
- demodawid, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3Thank god for dogs. They are their only weakness.
- batguano, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3You do realise that this is the same government that won't let you take bottled water on a plane... right?
- driftwood07, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3or make fun of for using their instead of they're
- marshall007, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3yea and im pretty sure gates bought his operating system for 50 grand so he's off the list too
- rarson, on 11/08/2007, -2/+5Um, most hackers I've talked to over the years felt that the term "hacking" can indeed apply to anything. If you like to figure out how things work on your own, then you're a hacker. That's what it's always been about for me. A thirst for knowledge.
Not that I don't think the term is often overused these days.
Social engineering is a kind of hacking that can be used for almost anything. - Nerfdude, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3al gore's trashing our rights! trashing!
- RobertGoulet, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3Impressive.... Superhero like even!
- Tiak, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3Dude... He was just good at talking people into stuff. Kevin Mitnick was a social engineer of note, he wasn't particularly skilled in the area of computer security... The government just had no understanding of what "hacking", his, or otherwise, was.
