- inactive, on 12/29/2007, -1/+44This is something we're going to have to be very careful about in the future. Tech savvy people already have an advantage over the general population re: information and knowledge, programmers and hackers (if they want to) could seriously disrupt the flow of information with fake videos, viral messages, or propaganda of their own. Government's can't really clamp down on some of their behavior without facing a major backlash from citizens on privacy rights and freedom, so it'll be interesting to see how they choose to combat this kind of stuff.
- nokiaboy, on 12/29/2007, -5/+42Dang - media mis-uses 'hacker' again - !@#$ ComputerWorld :)
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -3/+31ActiveX: r4p1ng ur b0x since 1996
- DennisPease, on 12/29/2007, -1/+20Caution! This is a serious problem. Many Diggers are out there looking for stories to Digg.
- IsmailOo, on 12/29/2007, -2/+16pfft, stupid people wanting to watch another person being killed.
- oMeSSiaHo, on 12/29/2007, -0/+12Honestly man you'd be surprised. I get at least a computer a week where the customer "downloaded a fix to a virus" and made the problem worse. I also feel sort of bad for the people who end up buying software to "remove" problems and waste their money or worse.
If it sounds technical enough people will just assume they dont know what it means and follow the instructions. - whyufail, on 12/29/2007, -5/+14You installed a random codec you've never heard of before to watch a video? Enjoy your malware, you earned it.
- elipabst, on 12/29/2007, -1/+8That battle was lost long ago and frankly it's getting old to see people gripe about it. Language is dynamic and words are always going to take on new meanings. It's even in freaking Merriam-Webster now:
1 : one that hacks
2 : a person who is inexperienced or unskilled at a particular activity
3 : an expert at programming and solving problems with a computer
4 : a person who illegally gains access to and sometimes tampers with information in a computer system - breadfred, on 12/29/2007, -1/+8digging you up as anyone who wants to voluntary visits a website to see a person murdered deserves a good hiding.
- aflaks, on 12/29/2007, -1/+7This bothers me quite a lot too! Thats not a hacker, thats just a criminal armed with a computer
- Mononuclear, on 12/29/2007, -0/+6most users of digg maybe. Not most users of computers. If you ever had the misfortune to work tech support for any company you know this first hand. I can remember a number of people who wanted e-machines (the company I worked for) to refund money they lost from those fake virus and spyware removal popups. Many were victims of identity theft because of it and of course wanted us to give them the money they lost back. 90% of the calls were because of slow computers full of spyware and viruses.
- Murdats, on 12/29/2007, -0/+6wait, a hacker is a noob and a pro?
- GhostyBoy, on 12/29/2007, -1/+6If by THEY you mean the government, then I think they have already proven completely inept at regulating anything. It's up to us as people to fact check and do our best to keep people informed. And hopefully the programmers and hackers are on our side.
Iraq, I have to say that your points are consistently thought provoking and well written. - avisotin, on 12/29/2007, -1/+6I am disregarding and burying your comment because it is clear from your profile that you do nothing but troll around in stories related to Bhutto. I don't care if that's what your opinion is. Just don't bring it into a story related to hackers and what they do.
- zappo1776, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4Well, OK, not most. I forgot how confused some people get.
- r00tus3r, on 12/29/2007, -1/+5You think hacking doesn't involve programming a lot of the time? Who do you think writes the code to exploit vulnerabilities? Seriously, are any of you people even in the I.T. field?
- sarge96, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4A Cracker is someone who actually breaks into the computer. These people aren't breaking in, they're tricking people into downloading malware. It's not hacking, not cracking... what would the term be?
- Ymeg, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3The world needs to stop attacking itself.
- tinselt0wn, on 12/29/2007, -1/+4someone who is sick enough to want to watch this woman get assassinated deserves all they get
- ayeroxor, on 12/29/2007, -1/+3************* IF YOU DONT LIKE THE TERM "CRACKING" CALL IT SOMETHING ELSE BUT THIS IS NOT HACKING *********
************* IF YOU DONT LIKE THE TERM "CRACKING" CALL IT SOMETHING ELSE BUT THIS IS NOT HACKING *********
************* IF YOU DONT LIKE THE TERM "CRACKING" CALL IT SOMETHING ELSE BUT THIS IS NOT HACKING ********* - nazadus, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2Because somehow you are supposed to know if this $random_codec is valid or not and because we all know codecs NEVER change. You could argue many other points that I would agree with, however this one is just fool hearty.
If you wanna do that, then we should only ever use plain text files and web pages should only be text too! - pixelperfect, on 12/29/2007, -1/+3Get ready to be dugg down.
- inactive, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2'Most' people will open videos like this without question.
- r00tus3r, on 12/29/2007, -1/+3It still counts as hacking anyway, because they gain access that they shouldn't have. Why do you people keep griping over a point that you're wrong about anyway. "it's not hacking, it's cracking, no it's phishing" oh stfu already.
- mrjit, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2Whose to say it's not the government who would be conducting this stuff in the future?
- inactive, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2retard?
- l33tboy, on 12/29/2007, -1/+3definitely done in poor taste.
- sniperboy67, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2why am i not surprised
- smurf22, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1He didn't do anything all he did was a phishing site. That requires no skill, he didn't break into anyone computer. A freaking script kiddie could do this.
- nokiaboy, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Good points, btw: I remember BBS too :)
- simplistics06, on 12/29/2007, -1/+2stfu by referring to them as tech savvy u made urself look like a noob
- Murdats, on 12/29/2007, -2/+3a cracker 'cracks' security or programs.
it is more applicable in the situations where hacker is usually used.
this is not cracking or hacking, its something more like phishing - Kwipper, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Am I the only one who hasn't fallen for these tactics. I came across them when i was trying to find videos of 2 girls 1 cup, BME Pain Olympics and now this, and not once did I fall for the "Download our special codec to view this video".
- nazadus, on 12/29/2007, -1/+2Yeah, so?
This is the English language. Things change over time. I'm sure if you were older than 50 you would remember when a lot of words used to mean something entirely different. - rudezombie, on 12/29/2007, -1/+2Geez, and here I thought the worst that could happen was another link to that Rick Astley video.
- systematic1420, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Am I the the only one who immediately thought of the Tool song Vicarious?
"cuz I need to watch things die, from a distance, vicariously I live while the whole world dies" - d03boy, on 12/29/2007, -2/+3who tried changing the meaning in the first place? that was a dumb idea to begin with. hacker SHOULD mean someone who breaks into a computer system. cracker just sounds dumb
- tomis, on 12/29/2007, -1/+2The cure for ignorance is free publicly available information, after that, if people choose not to inform & educate themselves, then it's their own fault and it's not the government's job to do jack ***** about it.
- Markpdotcom, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1As far as I was aware the difference between a hacker and a cracker was the type of entry use. A cracker would use scripts/programs to bruteforce attack a computer/file/program, where as a hacker exploits a flaw in a system (and is generally considered to be higher up the ladder than a cracker).
This is how it was on BBS systems etc... I guess I'm old :(
Now most people use the term "script kiddie" when they mean cracker. - Glorydies, on 12/29/2007, -2/+3/gangsters
- Myonosken, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Sadly its morbid curiosity.
- nokiaboy, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1It's probably because most of the people covering stories like this are fairly old - kind of like when cars where new crimes that involved cars made mention of the fact a car was involved... give em a few more years.
- bjornski, on 12/29/2007, -1/+2Capitalism works in much the same way.
- Tanktunker, on 12/29/2007, -2/+2Oh internet people, what tragedy WON'T you exploit for your own personal gain?
- Myonosken, on 12/29/2007, -1/+1God man u r hardcore haxer. Fuk dis newbie *****
- zappo1776, on 12/29/2007, -4/+4 Most users know not to download and run code just because a box pops up telling them to do so. If you think you need to update something go to the program itself and click on 'check for updates'.
- deadlift, on 12/29/2007, -4/+3http://www.killwithme.com
