That would be because they don't know how. The average AOL user either has little to no idea how to use the real Internet or is a 12-16 year old coining the connection off of their parents.
As far as AOL as a entity, it is a festering wart on the face of the Internet. Netscape was once a respectable entity but unfortunately they got hit hard by Microsoft and bought out by AOL.
