- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank god for Thunderbird, because the Gmail filters are definitely on the fritz. And here I though it was just because I had been a little less cautious with my address lately.
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FCUK is actually a chain of clothing stores.

2 Hey it's catches more than 99% of my spam.... And it catches 0% of legimite emails. That second thing I find many times more important than the some spams wo come trou
3 Hey there is a "Create a filter" link ever wondered whgat that does?"
You probably get no spam because gmail thinks you, yourself are a spammer with all your spelling errors. Fat fingers? - kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think any email with an "unsubscribe" button should be picked up by the spamming filter and automatically be placed in the spamming folder. The spam system should also be controlled by the users. Say if 20% of gmail users are reporting a specific email as spam, send it to the spam folder automatically for everyone.... Makes sense to me!
- CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm noticing some Spam "leaks" but its still the best filter I've found. I run ALL my mail through a Gmail account before it gets to my Blackberry and I now get no spam on it.
- CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm noticing some Spam "leaks" but its still the best filter I've found. I run ALL my mail through a Gmail account before it gets to my Blackberry and I now get no spam on it.
- jmz668, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's "manages" you moron
- letterk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been using GMail to manage 7 accounts for 6 months, now. I have never received ONE piece of spam. Seems to be working great for me.
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0filters work fine for me. very rarely does a spam message hit my inbox, and i get maybe 10-20 spam e-mails a day.
- dukeinlondon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0works fine for me, although a bit trigger happy lately.
- mwebb1984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0only spam i've gotten in 2 years is about 4 paypal phishing emails. :) luckily there havent been any for
- bilangew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I see a rise in the amount of spam I get, but not only in GMail.. the main issue, at least for me is Hotmail, for which I have an account which is older than your grandma... so every hobbyist spammers on the planet knows my addy. :/
- masterofshadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I get 10-20 spam mails an HOUR, yeah thats right, an hour. I get maybe 1 a month get to my inbox, hell most dont even get to my spamfolder with the filters I set (each one that makes to my spam folder gets a filter made for it) just make up some filters and direct them to the trash.
- Tripp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've noticed it too. Very annoying. Still, it's catching about 90% of it so I feel bad complaining.
- wigginz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been having issues with the GMail SPAM filter. It seems the last month or so, I've been getting about 10+ "The Daily Stock Barometer" or "The Stock to Watch" SPAM making it into my Inbox. No matter how many times I've reported these messages, they still make it through. I do get a ton of SPAM every day though, at any given time I have 7500+ messages in my SPAM folder (messages deleted after they are 30 days old).
- SweeterThnEqual, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gmail drives me crazy so I get my emails forwarded to Yahoo. There are a lot of spam messages that Gmail doesn't catch, and forwards, but Yahoo catches them all. I'm happy to use both, but Yahoo really does have better spam protection, not to mention more storage, and never greets me with a "servers down, try back later" message.
- dolphumous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mine works fine. I think it's only missed a couple the whole time I've used gmail.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's funny. Just yesterday I got my first spam message EVER in my inbox. I was a little upset. lol
- MrMysterious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a theory on this. Spammers could sign up for 100+ gmail accounts and send spam to themselves. They then could mark all their spam as "This is not SPAM". Thus, they throw the filters off for everyone.
A month or so ago I was getting about 100 spams into my inbox, after a week of frustration it is back to 0. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Luckily the gmail filter has been like a brick wall for me. And I just recently started getting more spam, all of which it blocks. I think I must have went on a dating website signup spree while i was drinking last weekend, goddammit
- jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do Gmail/Google articles get so many diggs? Gmail filters fine, even if it misses a few. No digg.
- mousky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is amusing to read how people want Gmail to be more like Yahoo Mail or Hotmail, yet, when Gmail was introduced the same people were attracted to how it was different from Yahoo or Hotmail. How times change.
As to spam, I get a couple a week and they all are marked as Spam. I'm not sure how the Google Spam filter is failing if any spam that gets "through" the system ends up marked as Spam? - xjbri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hotmail/Windows LiveMail is way worse.
- tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you guys actually get spam through gmail? weird. . . I might get one every 2 - 3 months or something in gmail, but hardly ever...their spam filters work for me...
- GLSmyth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As mentioned on Digg a while back, something happened to my account and at this point I have over 15,000 messages in my spam filter.
- juanbobo808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gmail should be different than Hotmail or Yahoo -- they were the first ones to offer free mass storage of emails and their various attachments, as well as providing a new interface that, IMO, is easier to use than both Yahoo and Hotmail.
On a separate note, I've been having the same issues with their Spam filter. I'm getting good emails in the spam folder and spam messages in the inbox. The nice thing is that once your report something as spam, and commit it to your spam folder, gmail will remember that next time that sender, or a related sender, sends you something. Very useful. - reef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone know what these "hey xxxx" emails are all about? we just started getting them too.. always with no message body
- IKbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got my first paypal phishing scam through the filter this morning.
- Dwebtron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haven't had a problem yet... but keep in mind, it IS STILL BETA!
- dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I get belted with spam. Between 100-150 per day and my spam fold has as of now 17,469 spam emails. Please help google, please.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dunno. I have been getting spam, but it goes into the 'SPAM' box and I typically never see it. I have yet to see any spam in my inbox.
Maybe Bill was right? Charging per email would certainly hold down the amount of spam. Seems totally crazy, but what else can we do? Nothing seems to be working :( - Mr.Glass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, i get one spam every 3 months or so that doesnt go straight to the spam folder, dont knmow what your complaining about. also, you can create a custom filter for spam, just as you can create a custom filter for whatever you want in gmail, and just point it to the spam folder.
- boozedrinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But yes, I do believe it is still a very good filter - they do go to the spam folder 99.9% of the time.
- boozedrinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^ yea it's funny of google to do that ^
I have noticed his as well. - Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I enjoyed a good (almost full) two years where I didn't get ANY spam in gmail at all. I'd say a total of 1 message a week or month at worst.
It's gotten worse in recent times because the spammers are getting better at what they do.
Give gmail some time, they'll catch up, we just have to let them.
I personally get a LOT of spam in my SPAM FOLDER but absolutely zero in my main folder. I don't have a problem with that, considering my Comcast e-mail (which I pay for) has more spam in the main folder than... well. There isn't a spam folder for it. - codyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I get *only* ten a day on my gmail account.. yet 99% of the time they go straight to where they belong: the spam folder. I think gmail's spam filters are the best ones I've seen / used.....
My two cents... - burt0010, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the way GMail displays "SpamĀ® Casserole Recipes" above your messages when you view your spam folder!
--jb - Claw787, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it sucks
- Tsukari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"think any email with an "unsubscribe" button should be picked up by the spamming filter and automatically be placed in the spamming folder."
good idea, except the fact that there are lots of legitimate mailing lists that still use those that I'm subscribed too that I'd rather not have to dig out of the trash every week.
Also you can't just filter for the word Hey, , because some people's user name is what they use everywhere else on the web so seeing a Hey, Tsukari in my email isn't necessarily spam. In fact until just recently it never was. - tomi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uh oh. I just got another one of these emails, expect a bit different

Shows up as (unknown sender), with the subject of "News for {my.username}". What's next? = - SinnFeinster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have had this problem on my own Gmail account, but I'm not too concerned about it, as Gmail does a pretty good job of blocking the spam before it gets to my inbox, and about 75% of what is left goes into my spam box. I have been on Gmail for a few weeks now and have only gotten 5 spam, good for the amount of crap i sign up for.
- cockbadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jkfan87:
How did you get the gmail account? The person who sent you an invite gets an email confirmation that you accepted the invitation. The email should have your new gmail address as the sender.
Whoever invited you should also be in your address book. My guess is that you picked up a random invitation from the 'net, and the invites were posted there by someone collecting addresses.
Try this: With your gmail account, send a new invite to your normal mail account, accept it, and then wait for the new account to receive any spam. Won't happen. - Hieros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've noticed this recently, and simply blocking words like "C0CK" and "V1AGRA" would cut out a lot of that. Gmail has yet to invent Leet Speak, but I don't mind that since I love doing an ARIN search on their IPs. :)
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I get no spam!
Sorry, had to be said. But, then, it's true. Been using Gmail for a good 6 months and not a single lick of spam. Why do I get the feeling that most of the spam people are getting is caused by an error occuring somewhere between the chair and keyboard? - tadunne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are the people saying that they are getting 100's of spams per day actually getting it in their inbox or just in their spam folder?
If it's in their spam folder then I guess that acceptable? if not then there is a problem..? People should have at least 2 levels of spam control anyway. - Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone that expects a spam filter to be 100% effective is either an idiot who expects too much or just has no clue how things work. Its just not possible. Not unless you have someone sitting there reviewing every message that comes in anyways.
- robsta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gmail has been doing ***** for me lately. :(
- foooey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm seeing the same thing, except I have around 500 a day getting into my inbox. My spam box is always hovering just over 100,000 emails.
I guess I should be glad to only be seeing 500 of the 4,000 a day I get, but they used to do so much better. - blong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
I've been using gmail for almost two years and spam hasn't been an issue. I own five domains, and a few of the addresses at those domains receive hundreds of spams a day. I'm sure if I forwarded all of my domain emails to my gmail account, there would be problems. Should I complain about it?
- digg - slackerhobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All the spam my account gets is caught by the filter. I have never had spam get through nor a legit email get filtered yet.
