- Decus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10maybe you two (pointing upwards) fail to reliaze that not everyone in the world speaks english.
linking to a blog in this case is ok as he give a little blurb on each of the five apps.....how else do you link to five different pages from a digg? - SuperJdynamite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"lame and bad english"
In English, sentences begin with capital letters and end with periods. Also, the word "English" is capitalized. - chrisrosa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2keep in mind... a do-it-yourself recovery using any utility, let alone those that are free, can make matters worse. don't go down this road unless you're ok with losing your data. sure, they can often work, but when they don't...what do you do then?
- flip79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I excuse me for my bad English, but I'm italian. I often post articles of my blog that speak about topics I can't find on Digg.com, so I don't see where's spam :)
Thanks to everybody for digg my article :) - barbarac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"None of them worked... Too bad I already dugg the story :("
You know you can un-digg right? - aThing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Stop saying nonfree software is free. Only TestDisk is free on that list.
- minitechnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it also needs something to blend away comments that are senseless in a personal way, but not bad enough to thumb them down. i always appreciate some comments though... others are really helpful.
- tominator1983, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg has a thumbs down feature on the comments.
It needs a thumbs down feature on the actual articles.
That ought to even things out. - cfazzini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GetDataBack is a sweet program.
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, time to push a truly Free piece of software:
ddrescue.
Available in most Linux distributions, DarwinPorts, and on the FreeBSD Ports tree, among other places. Or rather, dd_rescue is in the Ports tree.
It seems that there's GNU ddrescue and a dd_rescue, both doing essentially the same thing, and both GPLed. Yay for Free Software.
In case you're wondering: Like dd, ddrescue can do a byte-for-byte copy of a block device. However, ddrescue and dd_rescue are geared toward data recovery. It recently saved my butt when a drive at work was dying; I dumped the contents of the drive, managed to get Disk Utility (yes, OS X) to repair the HFS+ filesystem, and dumped the data to a new drive. - rhawk301, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Data recovery is always something good to have around. Those who do not know too much about it may get something out of this. My advice is look around for those tools which work best for you, and then keep them in your arsenal to use. I have a little red clam shell CD case I carry everywhere, and I have my best tools in it.
- ehudokai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Testdisk rocks!! I've used it several times to recover hard drives that I knew had data, but weren't showing anything. AND it's the only one that's both free as in beer and free as in speech.
- xijio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0None of them worked.
I was in this computer lab last night on this computer when all of the systems shut down. Had been saving but only to the local disk and these things wipe the disk whenever they boot. I saw this digg and tried to get the data back but nothing worked.
Too bad I already dugg the story :( - MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm confused: all the programs were free when I downloaded them a few minutes ago. Are you sure you all clicked the right links?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I don't understand digg. I post good stuff all the time, never get to the front page. Yet this made up crap gets to the front. Only one program on there is free. This is not really interesting or useful. Oh hail Democracy
- BasouKazuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I havent tried them but sometimes recovery sites offer free downloads to try the software. Usually these demo versions don't enable you to recover much of anything.
- magebomb11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^^
getdataback is all i use. - bikeham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's fascinating that you can scan or speed-read (sic) a web page like Ricky's web review and it seems kosher, but reading it soberly and slowly you can see the errors. Nice that someone on digg is spruiking the virtues of some of the excellent linux based software.
I rarely digg anyway. - savmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or just buy spin-rite for $90
- Scalper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PC Inspector File Recovery is free
I havn't check the other ones but more than one is Free - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the only thing i use to recover my stuff is R-Studio ... and ive used that to recover MANY files from many different things .... CF cards, SD cards, Hard drives, and Ipod .. all with success. it scans each sector of the media for any remnants of data and will save it... personally i wouldnt suggest anything else (although its not free, but you get what you pay for!)
- RayBarrentine, on 11/15/2008, -0/+0I realize that data recovery is a prominent concern for many. Recovery is reactive, why not take a proactive approach and back the data up so that when there is a problem, you can simply restore the lost data. No fight, no muss, no fuss.

Damn right. - JoshuaH, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2"maybe you two (pointing upwards) fail to realize that not everyone in the world speaks English. "
Maybe you fail to realize this site is in English, If we were other people in the world who did not speak English, We probably wouldn't be at this site. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1HAHAHHAHAHAHHAAHHA Hey guess what I hate all of you.
:) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1lame and bad english
