- Slashered, on 09/24/2008, -1/+59why would you go to the same ATM four times in a row
- 3ashmawy, on 09/24/2008, -9/+41stupidity from ATM makers should be a reason they shouldnt be in jail
- HookmasterCH47, on 09/24/2008, -3/+34John Connor would not have been caught, but he's 1337 like that, you know saving man kind from skynet and all...
- lukeyd2006, on 09/24/2008, -1/+30Stupidity.
- browntiger, on 09/24/2008, -0/+16Retarded. Why operator functions even available when ATM is closed, why not place enable service menu button inside ATM.... This would have forced hackers open ATM to get to denom functions....
How is that holding two keys together is secure.
Do a simple google search for Tranax_MB_Operator_Manual.pdf
Master key: 555555, Service: 222222, Operator: 111111.
Hmm, if one by mistake get's into service menu, chances of entering those keys by mistake is pretty high. At least I would have entered master key w/o even knowing. Stupid. - inactive, on 09/24/2008, -5/+20Yeah, and when burglars break into houses, they shouldn't go to jail either because it was clearly the homeowner's fault for not having better security...
- oscarolim, on 09/24/2008, -0/+15You don't understand. The machine thought it was giving one dollar bills, when actually was giving twenty.
So, when they withdraw 20 dollars, they are actually withdrawing 20x20 dollars, which makes 400 dollars. But since they had to really withdraw 20 dollars from they account, they are only stealing 380 dollars. - lucutus, on 09/24/2008, -2/+16Awesome hack but stupid use of it. C'mon now you hack it then go to it 3 times with no disguise? The only thing worse would be using your own card... Oh wait did he do that!?!?
- wastelander, on 09/24/2008, -0/+12It deducted the $20 you asked for from your bank account then gave you $400.. net gain $380
- footballer7604, on 09/24/2008, -1/+12I don't know what was dumber, going back to the same ATM 3 times, or posting a news report telling everyone that the passcodes can be found on the internet for these specific manufacturers ATM machines and even giving screen shots of the screens to change the denominations.
- censorshipwreck, on 09/24/2008, -1/+11So the password is, 12345... That's the stupidest combination I've ever heard in my life! It's the kind of thing an idiot would have on his luggage!
- RcHer, on 09/24/2008, -2/+12Don't ***** with Lobo!
- yojiffyskippy, on 09/24/2008, -0/+10Greed. Gets'em every time.
- ryanbush81, on 09/24/2008, -0/+10I believe it was "Federal pound me in the a** Prison"
- timusca, on 09/24/2008, -2/+11I used to work for Diebold... say what you want about their voting machines, but their ATMs are solid. You can't "reprogram" bills using a keypad. Each cassette has a setting on the back of them which tells the ATM what type of bills are in there. Basically, the only way to reprogram would be to get into the chest (which is secured by a unique combo every time that must be received via phone) and pull the cassette out. Which if you are able to do that, you'd just take the damn money and run. All major ATMs are designed this way
Second, someone mentioned getting a paper receipt in the shape of a $20 bill? Can't happen in any of the major ATMs. There are sensors to test the thickness and consistency of the bill as the move through the machine. If ANYTHING is not an actual bill, it reroutes the money into a separate bin to be collected by the bank at a later time.
Basically, this must have been one cheap piece of ***** ATM. - igyigyigy, on 09/24/2008, -0/+9I've worked in shops with ATMs like this and the 'admin' stuff was always accessed only after opening the thing up with the (2) keys, what sort of idiot manufacturers let the settings be changed from the keypad like that?
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -1/+9Harold & Kumar go to Jail
- tensix, on 09/24/2008, -0/+8This is due entirely to the stupidity of both the manufacturer, and the owner of the machine.
Firstly, if you make a machine that holds CASH and give it a hard-coded default password that grants COMPLETE authority over the machine, how can you be surprised that someone was able to do this? These default codes are usually in the usage manuals for ***** sake, all you need to do is go to the manufacture's website or call them and order the damn thing. I remember you could find the default password for the latest model of Triton ATM's by downloading the manual off their website until these news stories started getting popular. Now you just have to look on Bittorrent. Most ATM owners don't care about updating their machine as long as they keep getting their $1-$5 "transaction fee", so this stupidity will continue.
Its the owners fault because instead of turning the tapes over to the authorities when he discovered the sham and changing the machine's password (or *gasp* disabling it, or *double gasp* updating it with the manufacturer's patch to fix this) he waited until the thieves came back just so he could pull a gun on them then chase after them in his car. How many people did he put at risk by pulling out a gun (and firing off a shot!) and then pursuing them on the roads in a civilian vehicle? - billmill, on 09/24/2008, -1/+8Other ways to hack a machine - I was visiting a freind of mine in Detroit. Went to an ATM to grab 40 bucks.. got a 20 dollar bill and a blank reciept cut in the shape of a dollar bill out of the cash despenser. A few weeks arguing with the bank.. To this day i never got that 20 back..
- AtraNoxVII, on 09/24/2008, -0/+7Piracy.
You never plunder the same booty more than twice. - handheldchimp, on 09/24/2008, -1/+7I like how the height of Nicholas Foster's right eye doesn't match the height of his left eye. He must be trying to fool the facial recognition software.
The other guy just looks like he wants to beat the ***** out of anybody for no apparent reason... - FiP0, on 09/24/2008, -0/+6Because only a few machines in his area were vulnerable ?
- royalwcheese, on 09/24/2008, -0/+6 1 2 3 4 5? That's amazing! I've got the same combination on my luggage! Prepare Spaceball 1 for immediate departure!
- yojiffyskippy, on 09/24/2008, -2/+7"The password is........... password"
- usedupfag, on 09/24/2008, -2/+7I wish if I could get hold of the codes. But *****, I'm in the UK, the smallest notes we have is £5, but I only know of one ATM in my whole area that dishes them out.
- brainflakes, on 09/24/2008, -0/+4Stupidity from store owners / installation engineers more like, when this first happened a few years ago the manual got posted online and along with the default password it clearly states that it should be changed as soon as the machine is installed.
From the article the manufacturers sent out a patch years ago that forces store owners to change the password on first use too. - getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4Eeeeeeeeeeeasy money...........come on!!
- Darrelc, on 09/24/2008, -0/+4Theres a few around leeds, near all the student places heh
- KonaGold, on 09/24/2008, -1/+5The code is 4-2-3-1
oh wait, that's for coke machines... - aklu, on 09/24/2008, -0/+4I DO
- TerrorTom, on 09/24/2008, -0/+4Similar story from my previous job at Chuck e. cheeses we accutually caught kids 14 and 15 years old, restarting machines(mind you this trick works on very few machines) and following the boot instructions to get into the games bios and from theyre make the game cost however much they want the game to cost i constantly would come across a game sitting theyre playing by its self, chuck e. cheese is very unsecure, its gotten better recently but with a little creativity there is a way around anything
- PintOfGuinness, on 09/24/2008, -1/+5Everybody needs a bodyguard called Lobo!
- notaku, on 09/24/2008, -0/+4He didn't say it's possible, he said the Diebold machines did not allow this.
- bobmugulie, on 09/24/2008, -1/+5Those examples are completely different (not that I agree with them). Almost anyone has the capability to steal a dollar bill laying on the ground or a car with the engine running. But it takes research and tools to hack an ATM. There's no magic insta-hack button that's marked "DON'T PRESS ME PLZ"
- MrFurious2k, on 09/24/2008, -0/+4Good Lord, they had the default passwords available on the Internet and no one thought to change them?
*sigh* And people wonder how they suddenly have 50 people attached to their wireless access point and their "internet" is so slow. - oscarolim, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3Probably just press 'enter'.
- yojiffyskippy, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3If stupidity justified theft, they're would be a LOT of broke companies and people out there.
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3I didn't know there were any £5 machines anymore
- WoundedCow, on 09/24/2008, -1/+4"What the men did was wrong, but they wouldn't deserve being shot, just for stealing money."
If it was my money? Yes it would. - Useight, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3And change the password on my luggage!
- oscarolim, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3Don't you mean math problems?
- DangerMouse9, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3Have you watched the news lately? There are a bunch of broke companies and broke people and the US government is bailing them out.
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3^^ Thanks! I'm so paying off my house early!
- Airforcefalco, on 09/24/2008, -1/+3Thank you for detailing how to break into a diebold machine!
Now to find a cassette tape. - bbqribs, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2"When the two men entered, Lobo recognized them from the surveillance tapes. "So I locked the doors and told them not to move while I had one of the employees call the cops," says Lobo.
According to police, Lobo pulled a gun on the men, who nonetheless managed to wrench the door open and bolt. Lobo grabbed one of them in a headlock, and a wild shot was fired in the scuffle before the men broke free and sped away in their rented Pontiac Grand Prix."
Uh, that sounds like Mr Lobo himself committed a felony. Yes, these two were tweaking an ATM machine, but they were not committing armed robbery and did not pose a physical threat. This guy locked them in a store, brandished a firearm at them, physically assaulted them, and then shot at them as they were trying to leave. That's stuff that will generally get MANY charges thrown at you. - FiP0, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2Information wants to be free. :)
- DangerMouse9, on 09/24/2008, -1/+3@bobmugulie
A better example would be to have your house keys in one of the fake rocks outside and then post a bunch of blogs about where your house and keys are and a listing of all your possessions. - StupidLiberal, on 09/24/2008, -1/+3They will go to jail for stealing 10k. Wall street financial 'wizards' steal billions, walk free.
bank/atm robbing is small peanuts compared to the white collar crime in this country. - bilbravo, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2It's a word problem. You know, on your math test in school it would ask you a question using words instead of just saying 4 + 4 = ?.
S/he is saying s/he wasn't good at the word problems. - ObamaWins08, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2It's the ATM owners/manufacturer's FAULT?
What's with you people? They should have done a much better job, but c'mon, these people are thieves. I feel like I have to shout "Theft is wrong people!"
It reminds me of Homer Simpson: "It takes two people to Lie; one to lie and one to listen". -
