You know what to do. - Matt-lars, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25The country itself is alright, it's the people living inside of it that are screwing it up.
- Democritus2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22At least they bothered to get a warrant. That part was good to see.
- SubWolf, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23USA! USA! US... err....
- dattaway, on 10/12/2007, -9/+27Perhaps this is part of Bush's fear campaign to start martial law. Get everyone afraid to speak out against the government, let it do the mistakes needed so disasters can happen, and then take necessary control. Martial law before the elections?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Hooking up with young girls is not a flaw of myspace.... it's a feature!
- nighthwk1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17"How is computer code considered free speech?"
Of course it is. Didn't you see the examples of code back when DeCSS was making news?

SO WHEN A MAN STABS A BABY WITH A KNIFE HE'S JUST EXPOSING THE FLAWS IN BABY FLESH AND SHOULDN'T BE ARRESTED?!!? IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE SAYING?!?!?! - ipfilt3r, on 10/12/2007, -9/+21land of the free my ass. this country sucks
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The best and fastest way to get something fixed is to bring it out to public attention.
Legal or not posting the info online for all to see was the correct moral thing to do. Especially if he cares about his country! - ideagirl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Per an article in the Star Tribune, his fake boarding passes are NOT a security threat:
""Does this pose a threat to security? No," TSA spokeswoman Carrie Harmon said. "Once they enter the screening checkpoint, that individual and his or her bags are screened for dangerous weapons and explosives.""
http://www.startribune.com/535/story/772107.html
Was is the smartest thing he could have done? Probably not. That doesn't make him a terrorist. - schwit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Senator Chuck Schumer posted the manual process that this guy automated:

So, I'm assuming the good Senator is next on the FBI list. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I was kinda scared today when I saw that van parking on the street under my apartment

- acff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9it's going to be awhile before my faith and confidence in the government actually improves..
- daeyeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeah, what the hell, that's ***** *****. They told him to take it down and he did...so they raid his house? Boggles my mind...
- blarn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@SecondGuesser Agreed, but unfortunately your comment makes you a criminal. Now I won't cite any laws or state my expertise, but trust me, you're a criminal.
- understudy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@Almost Clever
What's your better way?
Blogging about it won't get it taken care of. Apparently, the only way to make somone fix the flaw is to make it something they cannot ignore.
As for the raids...a not-so-subtle tactic to get people to be afraid of exposing corporate and government inadequacies.
_ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Basian header fud completely misspedled dinkleBerry programmers looking for duplicate comment posts. What they should Be doing is figuring out how to prevent article dups
Yeah.... I kinda' figured that was going to get him in trouble.
Of course my first response to the digg article headline was NWA... who wants to see a NWA concert in this day and age.
The feds are so stupid and useless... Surely someone must have realized that this could have been a *HUGE* source of intelligence and leads. As it is now, every last one of us out here watching their reaction to this is saying: "WTF? This guy hasn't done anything wrong other than point out the emperor has no clothes. I guess it's true; we no longer live in a free country". Congratulations FBI (and mister congress critter), you have single handedly moved us one step closer to the second revolution.
So, reminder to self before you pull some stunt that is *REALLY* going to punch the powers that be's buttons:
1- line up legal representation (the ACLU *AND* the EFF should be lineing up for this)
2- insure that the act can be classified as "performance art" (or art of some type... yes children, code *IS* free speech)
3- open a source forge project outside of the US (you know... somewhere free) on which you can keep distributing the work
4- have a notebook and pen standing by so that you can write down the names and positions of the senators and congress critters who overreact and attempt to use boogie man issues to cow the public into giving up even more of their constitutionally guaranteed rights.
silly programmer tricks are for kids while smarter mice take over the world as it rots Beneath your feet. Don't look for good grammar or proper spelling in the tragety of the commons comment space. - tainedhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If we agree with you.

So you just aren't allowed to speak about anything security or terrorist related if you expose blatant flaws in the system? Airport security is a joke, it really is. The only thing airport security is good at is delaying passengers and giving Tequwanza and Billysue a job. Popular Science had a very good article on real airport security a year or two ago:
http://www.popsci.com/popsci/aviationspace/4de85b4a1db84010vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html
Unfortunately that style security will never happen because we will only spend just enough to not be safe. Plus actual terrorist have a lot of time to sit around and figure out ways to kill people, it's their job.
I would prefer no security to a half assed, designed by ***** retards on a committee, ***** security. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Is it illegal to perpetuate fraud or not?

- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Its crap like this that my home country, Taiwan, has been labeled by Freedom House and other civil liberties and human rights organizations as being, "Freer than the USA". Its sad to hear that a 10 year old democracy has better civil liberties, press freedom, etc, than one that is 230 years old.
As a dual citizen of both countries, I'm very saddened and disappointed.
I love the USA, we should be doing something about the TSA which has failed 20/22 security tests last week. THAT is our security hole, not this man who had a site that made flimsy fake tickets. - AnotherBrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+61) He didn't break the law.
2) This very same flaw has been known and reported on before but nothing was done to correct it. Those in charge have proven, repeatedly, that they must be shamed into providing actual security. - cody50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ Chaser12
they probably thought you were doing some HTML - hirak99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@sithmat
Do you honestly think writing a letter to the airlines or the security manager would have worked? - dgendreau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What the hell? How is what he did any worse than a Reporter sneaking a fake gun through airport security to test if it can be discovered?
- AnotherBrian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Did he actually upgrade himself on a flight? If not, then there was no fraud.
Describing how fraud might be done != fraud
Did you know that you can break in to a bank vault with explosives? Well you can.
There, I am just as 'guilty' of bank robbery as this guy is of fraud. - crexor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Email form of Congressman Markey who called for Chris's arrest

- NoSuchAgency, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12You are safe. That was me, I was lurking to kidnap schoolgirls.
- hirak99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I know what will happen, false evidence will be planted, he will be tortured - mentally and physically, till he accepts that he is involved in a national security conspiracy, and/or he is working as a foreign spy, and/or he manufactures and sells drugs.
And then the guy will vanish. - jkr06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's funny, the other day I was watching 'V for vendetta' and the government would go to any lengths, even going after their own people to be in power.
"There are no coincidences, only the illusion of coincidence". - nighthwk1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Writing a virus is not a crime in itself. Compiling and releasing it is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Exercising your freedom of speech is not against the law.. so suck it.

like libel. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's hard to believe he's a democrat... Then again he looks pretty old, maybe he is really a republican posing as a dem in a dem state.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3be sure to check out michelles awesome summary to: http://digg.com/political_opinion/The_fake_boarding_pass_generator
- SecondGuesser, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Wow, I'm surprised at how confused you folks are about what is covered under the free speech clause. It is by no means universally protected.
Just like fake IDs, badges, currency, etc. Writing code that allows you to do illegal things is not protected under free speech provisions. - JackAxe, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10I second that, our goverment in its current corrupt--fascist--fear-mongering--Mammon-worshiping-state sucks big-time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just emailed the FBI, copied various senators and congressmen... explaining that Mr Schumer should be held to the same standards as Christopher Soghoian.
I suggest others do the same. - dlsspy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@sithmat
This has nothing to do with terrorism. You don't call your congressman when you find out someone's found a way to steal soft drinks from a vending machine.
This act allows for theft of service, plain and simple. As such, it was right be shut down. Maybe the raid had something to do with finding out who may have stolen service using the site, whatever.
To think it's got anything to do with terrorism or public security is absurd, though. How am I at risk from someone who uses a counterfeit boarding pass any more than I would be at risk from someone who bought one? - Cykaos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Making counterfeit money = illegal
Telling someone how to make it = not illegal - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah but the fact that the judge just gave it out shows the checks and balances are slowly washing away. The judge should have told the FBI to go ***** themselves because there's no reason to raid this guys house. They're a bunch of idiotic *****. ***** this country.
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I'm sorry, what did the guy expect?
But those calling for his arrest should be shot (in the knees) for such a lack of logic. Give him FBI credentials and let him test the practical side of transportation security, short of hauling C4 onto a plane of course.
People like this make the country safer. -
