- captainjy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Overkill. Damn, get a good credit card that lets you dispute charges!
- pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If you want to protect your credit card, get one that allows you to use a temporary card number when making online purchases. My CC company (MBNA America) allows me to create a temp card number with a predefined spending limit and expiration date. If someone happens to intercept it, it won't do them any good, or me any harm."
Wow...That is pretty cool! Do lots of credit card companies use this method? Is it becoming more common? - Luftwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Protect your credit card? I don't think so.
No digg. - amoeba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You could always run http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/
from your USB drive (on Windows, easily under QEMU) with TOR and Privoxy.
There's your "Extremely Safe Browser" - Noah0504, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just like the others have pointed out, it's not going to protect your credit card. And why not just use IE on the Virtual Machine? ;)
(Just kidding about IE) - MrDan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Protect your credit card :- Dont use it on ***** sites !
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That only protects your credit card if you don't use your credit card
for anything while using that browser session. - dpknc84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Paranoid a bit are we?
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn, I have to protect my credit card now thanks to this article.
- Awakened, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^LOL
Very, very cool but the VMWare Player install is pretty hefty. Checking it out now. - cvncpu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's called *nix
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0got paranoia? i know a guy that used to run a virtual machine to browse the net.. he stopped because it was to damn annoying booting the vm everytime he wanted to browse the net.
- aaarg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it is an effective means to help protect you from virii and the like, but not the whole credit card crap
- andrebsd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bleh... link doesn't load :(
... And I wanted to leave him a comment!
Credit card protection my bottom. - AnteChronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you want to protect your credit card, get one that allows you to use a temporary card number when making online purchases. My CC company (MBNA America) allows me to create a temp card number with a predefined spending limit and expiration date. - womble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a second instance of Firefox running under as a different user (under Linux) as a privacy protection. You could do the same for bettr security: not as good as a VM, but practical.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seriously, i agree with everyone else on the credit card thing
you only protect yourself from stuff being put on your machine, not taken away - covrigel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We all know it wouldn't protect a credit card.
Also running VMWARE with 128 ram gone, would make firefox slower than just running it on my PC - skate4011, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Protect your credit card with this wont even work all your doing is protecting your comp from outside things in all reality this will do nothing to protect your CC if the site itself has vulnerabilities.
- N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0zelphi said "Yeah, it sounded good until the "credit card part". Submitter is an absolute idiot."
no kidding. - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the only thing this protects you from is being hacked (browser flaws and running .exe files like a retard). If you run linux not in root mode you'll essentially get the same protection. I would imagine there is something similar in Windows XP (not running as admin i guess?)
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's an idea, someone develop a browser that emulates itself separate within the OS so that it is therefor not actually running on your current version OS but an emulated one kinda like a DosBox or something :P same concept, much different, but i bet it's possible nontheless.
- zelphi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, it sounded good until the "credit card part". Submitter is an absolute idiot.
- dravidian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why not just create a separate login for surfing and make sure that user has no read/write permissions to important directories?
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Credit cards are usually stolen from the server side of a transaction. This may protect you from viruses that exploit yet undisclosed security holes in Firefox, but it can't protect you from phishers or your own mistakes with whom you trust your credit card number to.
- ssaha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Start using cash if the level of paranoia is this high ;o)
- whackaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a dilema that is becoming more and more frequent on digg:
interesting article BUT the poster leaves a ***** description.
no digg, to be on the safe side - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The comments showing yet again why Digg users are children.
- Kostik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For super paranoia patients! LOL
No digg - Aeplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not using your credit card might not prevent credit card fraud.
I talk about the second instance that credit card fraud has happened to me here. - SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anymore credit card comments? I don't think there's been enough yet. ;)
Seriously though, has anyone actually read the article? It has a nice link to to something called the "Browser Appliance" here: http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/vm/browserapp.html
Pretty nifty virtual machine to load up in VMWare player (it's just a firefox on ubuntu vm that auto loads the browser). Interesting nonetheless. - Aeplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://blog.stevedoria.net/20050910/my-hijacked-credit-card ... hrm.. anchor tag didn't work above.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could be interesting I guess..
- MrDan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The comments showing yet again why Digg users are children."
With you yourself being a Digg user and thus a child. - karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah a keylogger installed on the base system will still log the keys pressed into the Virtual Machine session. If your really paranoid use the On screen keyboard in windows (start>run>osk) and set it for "hover to select" and also make sure you trust the site and the ssl certification.
- alphamerik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always install the internet on a VM... wouldn't want to run the internet outside of one! If everyone installed the internet in a VM we wouldn't have any virii, worms, bots, hackers, or crackers! Thank you MS for giving us VM!!!
j/k - Xopl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not enough people have said this yet: The submitter is an idiot.
If you give your credit card to some business or website or whatever, they will have your credit card number, and then it is on them to keep it secure. You always want to do online credit card transactions using a secure web connection so that your credit card is encrypted (look for the padlock icon in some browsers, or look for the "https://" in the location box ... notice the 'S'). Running your browser in a virtual machine will do nothing to further secure your credit card.
However, running your browser in a virtual machine *will* protect your computer, in theory, from buffer overflow attacks and other attacks on your system that would otherwise allow the attacker to execute code on your computer, potentially even taking it over. - dpknc84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@cvncpu
*nix won't do crap if you use a credit card online. - TheGSRGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Ok this is lame", me picks.
- nanboya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The CC criticism aside, I dugg the story for bringing up the fact that VMWare is now distributing a free runtime player that you can use without having to pay for Virtual PC. Sure, there are open-source options available, but it's nice to have another free, commercial option.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone noticed that the Credit Card processing wont be more secure? I was wondering if I should point it out, since there might be some people out there who havent heard. Damn.
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know how to lock down firefox(from kids) and prevent downloads and stuff?
Thanks. - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0A complete effing moron.
Hey guy, email me your credit card number, dont worry, its over VMware! - msodrew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Here's another CC comment: the submitter is an idiot.
- RogueJediX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dude, get your facts straight. Making an online purchase in a browser on a virtual machine will NOT protect your credit card, because you would still be transmitting its number. No digg from me, sorry. And how did this get the front page??
- Gaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0idiot
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0i bet this guy has night terrors about this.... arrgh my credit card i no i should not have singed up for p0rn
