- thumbslapper, on 07/15/2008, -8/+567You will learn to respect the sysadmin.
-BOFH - m3mn0n, on 07/15/2008, -7/+390At least he didn't burn it all down.
Why didn't they just give him the stapler? - Chebsi, on 07/15/2008, -30/+389If his name was Mohamed he'd be called a terrorist.
- microft, on 07/15/2008, -7/+336Never mess with a nerd with root access.... That's just bad business....
- dupswapdrop, on 07/15/2008, -10/+247Lesson number one don't piss off the nerd!
- Moose_Head, on 07/15/2008, -3/+187Ah ah ah, you didn't say the magic word!
- fluffyturtle, on 07/15/2008, -1/+164I get a kick out of this part: "Authorities have searched Childs' home and car for a device that could be used in such an attack, but so far no such evidence has been found."
Apparently they have seen too many movies and were looking for some scary looking device with a trigger switch and some over ominous knobs and dodads, you know, instead of a FRIGGIN computer or laptop. You can't tell me a sys admin didn't have a computer or even a mobile phone. - VintageMud, on 07/15/2008, -2/+161"Look, the people you are after are the people you depend on. We cook your meals, we haul your trash, we connect your calls, we drive your ambulances. We guard you while you sleep. Do not... ***** with us."
-Tyler Durden - reddcell, on 07/15/2008, -9/+159That article made it a point...multiple times...to talk about his annual income. You can have your opinion on why this may be, but mine is that this article was specifically written to make me feel bad about my sysadmin job...because it's no where close to the 6 figure mark.
: ( - SkippyDoorknob, on 07/15/2008, -0/+142Maybe he was eating a bowl of really crunchy cereal and didn't hear his boss when he said he was fired.
- loquax, on 07/15/2008, -5/+127BOW BEFORE ME FOR I AM ROOT!
- o0adam0o, on 07/15/2008, -2/+123"$5 million bail"
Even child molesters and murderers get 1mil and under...sad. - crazy0, on 07/15/2008, -6/+118sadly you are correct
- chrispen, on 07/15/2008, -1/+95"...authorities say undoing his denial of access to other system administrators could cost millions of dollars."
Seriously? It could cost millions of dollars to remove it? Oh wait, its the authorities that say that, sorry I figured some sort of professional would have made that sort of outrageous projection, not just the "authorities". - neowolfwitch, on 07/15/2008, -2/+87I'm really surprised this doesn't happen more often. This is what happens when you crap on a Sysadmin.
- thephosphorbox, on 07/15/2008, -0/+85No no, he must have a device thats held together with electrical tape with some coiled wires sticking out of it and a huge telescoping antenna. It will likely have a display showing some sort of countdown!
- Kingster, on 07/15/2008, -1/+79My bet is that you also don't live in San Francisco where making 120K is like making 60K in the rest of the country.
- geardosdotnet, on 07/15/2008, -16/+93If his name were Mohamed he probably would never have gotten the job, even if he had a 4.0 GPA from the Indian Institutes of Technology
- SinisterBunni, on 07/15/2008, -3/+79Lesson #3 - Nerd may go to jail but has last laugh as whole F'ing city has to redeploy their information systems.
- poiuytrewq44, on 07/15/2008, -0/+75News Update: They found the power button and everything is back to normal.
- bdpf, on 07/15/2008, -9/+81Tried to fire him for unknown reason; ? ? ?
Payroll cut back, after he helped to setup the system, he was no longer cost effective. Someone else would do the job for less?
Had a son-in-law, with the same problem but he didn't leave a back door password. They wanted him to janitorial duties, sweep floors and clean the toilets. He quite and made their day, his lower paid female assistant got his old job for less money. Go Wall Mart?
Redundant people get pissed off. Don't be surprised if they piss on you. :P - Nuken, on 07/15/2008, -2/+67How do you 'try' to fire someone?
- potterboy, on 07/15/2008, -0/+64Simple, you fire him, but he mysteriously doesn't disappear from the employee database.
- ColorBlind, on 07/15/2008, -1/+61epic fail of a reply.
- m3mn0n, on 07/15/2008, -0/+58"this is unix! I know this!"
- microft, on 07/15/2008, -1/+50ever heard of drive encryption?
- CountBrass, on 07/15/2008, -0/+48Obviously no-one is afraid you'll take over the entire computer system. So the solution is to..........
- c0r3file, on 07/15/2008, -6/+51They haven't labeled him a 'terrorist' yet? Wow. Just... wow. I thought everyone was a terrorist these days...
- p3ngwin, on 07/15/2008, -11/+56if his name was Mohamed he would be tech support in India, not the admin :)
- zydeco, on 07/15/2008, -4/+47Dugg for knowing BOFH. Man, I need to read those again.
- potterboy, on 07/15/2008, -2/+45http://www.theregister.co.uk/odds/bofh/
Read it. - Logal, on 07/15/2008, -1/+41If only there were someone around who knew something about computers....
/sarcasm - fxu1989, on 07/15/2008, -3/+41sudo fire terry
- SeenByMany, on 07/15/2008, -0/+37...you forgot blinking LED's
- Chebsi, on 07/15/2008, -2/+39...Newman!
- majordanger, on 07/15/2008, -1/+37He may have to take a creative writing class before he interviews for another SysAdmin job.
- jacobdis, on 07/15/2008, -3/+38At least the majority of them are related to the subject in question, rather than your inadequate public display of typical Digg ignorance.
- redux2redux, on 07/15/2008, -0/+33An additional $22,534 for being on-call as a trouble-shooter. I need to renegotiate my salary!
- McShr3dd3r, on 07/15/2008, -2/+35Just let SkyNet Take control of the system
- kenplaysviola, on 07/15/2008, -0/+32I work in the public sector and can tell you that firing someone can be difficult with all the bureaucracy, union power, and lawsuits. I know this system admin who got busted for illegal drug use while on the job. He was going to get fired but threatened to sue. So my company got scared and worked out some deal with him to go into rehab for a few months. Now he's back on the job.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -2/+34he was making 149K
- PatrickTulskie, on 07/15/2008, -0/+32I think that estimate was actually made by Dr. Evil.
- bingostud722, on 07/15/2008, -1/+32You're obviously not a sysadmin
- CosmicJustice, on 07/15/2008, -5/+36Lesson #2: Nerd goes to jail.
- rockefeller2, on 07/15/2008, -4/+34What's up with people associating the name Mohamed with India?
- PolkStreet, on 07/15/2008, -7/+37Time to bring out the waterboarding to get him to talk! :D
- gbhall, on 07/15/2008, -2/+30I want to hear more as this develops!
- dinklebrow, on 07/15/2008, -0/+28Die Hard4.
- jreesnc, on 07/15/2008, -5/+32126K a year, for a municipal sysadmin? Pretty dammed good pay, especially since he doesn't even have to live in S.F.
- TechMike, on 07/15/2008, -0/+27That's because Sys Ads make so much money! /not
the rest of the cost is the overpaid execs writing emails about how to get rid of the guy who kept the emails flowing -
