- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38That's a real shame. And it doesn't even look like you can pay to get rid of it. Looks like its back to suicide for me!
- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27AaronTyler - Since you won't endorse it I will.
I, GoatRandy, Hereby fully enodrse this PiR8Ed Copy of DAEMON Tools.
There, that oughta do it. ;) - Ascendant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I would hope that most of us by now realize that "search bar" does indeed connote "spyware."
- mkaufman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23it seems to be possible to install it without ad ware
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/t9793-how-to-install-without-adware.html
however, the process is confusing and still suspicious.
time to back up that old daemon tool installer... - digitalgopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17anyone know of a good alternative? also, with the version I'm using, I'm capped at a max of 4 virtual drives. is there another alternative that lets you have 'unlimited' mounted drives?
- drougnor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18If, by now, anyone using Daemon tools doesn't quite grasp just WHAT a 'search tool' really is, they deserve to catch every piece of spyware they get.
I mean, seriously, doesn't knowing what Daemon tools even is require a certain am mount of net savvy? - gahal, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Beer, is there anything it can't do? ;)
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Oh my god people. You have to uncheck a single freaking checkbox when you install it. Just uncheck the search bar in the install options, oh wow! It doesn't install!
Big F-ing deal.
Lame. Not to mention old. The Daemon tools people themselves admitted it upon 4.0's release...it's been MONTHS since then. - jool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Maybe it is about time to write a little app that hooks into the windows installer and replaces "Search Bar" with "Spyware" and automatically unchecks all boxes.
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+134.x versions have been out for a while and everyone knows theres spyware in it.
However, there is an option to not install it just like Messenger Plus, just read carefully and you won't install any garbage. - LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12When I had a PC i used to use this program all the time! But this is pretty low.
- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The problem with this is that he is foisting spyware on unsuspecting users, and abusing the trust that he earned through years of being a decent guy to trick people into installing unstable, buggy, and privacy lacking software on their machines.
If he wants to make money he can charge a buck fitty for a copy without the spyware, or whatever it is that he's getting from WhenU. Either way though he needs to make it more obvious that the 'DAEMON Tools Search Bar' has nothing to do with DAEMON Tools, and everything to do with Ads/User tracking. - Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Good thing I still have the old one...
I have a nasty habit of saving every single installer that I download. - doctechnical, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11So, umm... I don't upgrade.
Not a problem.
Old version works fine for me. - AaronTyler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10DT.Soft.DAEMON.Tools.v4.00HE.READ.NFO-DVT ....Here's an alternative................(Which I do not endorse)
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah. I've been a user of Alcohol for a while. Its the most simplistic and supports all the major formats. ISO, NRG, CUE, you name it. It also lets you rip cd images onto your hard drive and has a nice list of all the ISOs you've ever run. I've used it up till now, its never failed me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If they want to make money there are better ways to go about it. WhenUSearch is definitly not benign
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/pest.aspx?id=453079971
It hijacks your browser so it can intercept any searches you do.
If they need money they can request donations, charge for the software, or display a small ad something like Opera use to. WhenUSearch is what you install when you want to piss off your users. If they started charging I'd gladly pay for a copy of Daemon Tools (assuming the price was consistant with that of competiting products).
I am glade they included an opt-out, and didn't go completely evil on us. - tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10No joke, this is ridiculous. I thought everyone already knew about this. Daemon Tools never even TRIED to hide this fact. They said they regret having to do it, but they weren't getting enough donations to cover their costs, and this was a good option. They said they INTENTIONALLY made it easy to skip installing it (which I did by unchecking a VERY OBVIOUS BOX) but they begged users to give it a try if they could because it helps support Daemon Tools. If not, then uncheck a box. It's obvious adware, they're not trying to trick anyone as they made a clear announcement and talk about it throughout their forums and on the NEWS page. Reported as OLD news. This has been known for MONTHS.
- KublaKhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo old! And you don't even have to install it - you're careless if you do! Almost all free programs come with adware/unessecary programs nowadays - for advertisment money
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I installed Alcohol a few days ago and it asked me if i wanted their search bar.....they do it too. i just said 'no'
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7doesnt nero image drive, alcholo 120%, and various other products do the same thing?
- pwhyll, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7so what are the altenatives? Alcohol?
- slithy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If you see anything labled search bar, it's spyware. I unchecked it without ever doubting that it's spyware. I'll probably just ended up deleting my windows partition anyways, so who cares.
- hfx392, on 10/29/2007, -3/+7You do not have to install the search bar, just unselect it during installation. God forbid you read what you're installing.
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well, 12oz of it cannot get you hammered like 12 shots of a real alcohol.
- samadam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4See http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5
Installing it is completely optional. There is a checkbox in the installer, checked by default. Just uncheck it to not install the adware. Still retain complete functionality. - skatingrox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ascendant: Google Search Toolbar is spyware now?
- sert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've always used Alcohol 120% and I've never even installed Daemon Tools thank god.
It's a handy program and it's served me well for 2+ years. Highly reccomended. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I save every installer too :O
- BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ah yes, the white back version...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Using an old version of Dameon tools for newer back ups won't always work because older versions of D-tools can't bypass new copyright mechanisms.
- Dustyb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only alternative I know of is called Virtual CD, its got some more features but I never liked it as much as Daemon Tools. You also have to buy it, but hey, no spyware.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is pretty old
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No its true still if you dont download the toolbar it still installs spyware. I just deleted the spyware like 2 days ago.
- OwenX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I find PowerISO to be a good alternative.
- otaking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"and also.. this is old news. no digg :)"
Yes yes...no digg!!!
I'm using one of the 4.x versions now...and I detest adware and spyware...I always keep my pc clean :D
it's only hard to figure out if you're retarded...which most of you are :'( - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Anybody who knows what Daemon Tools is and how to use it should know how to install it without the adware.
What I want to know is: has anybody done the Installation WITHOUT the Search Bar and have a clean scan with a spyware detecting software? I don't trust those opt-out setup screens. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Read, and you will understand. You can opt-out. ok?
Got it? Do I have to repeat myself?
Click opt out.
How you people can even operate the emulation software is beyond me. - Dari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another for 'Old News'. Most of us knew about this when Daemon Tools 4 was first released.
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Boo hoo...
- samadam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just to make sure no one doubts me, i have done it myself. Worked just fine, no malware in sight.
- strangeone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3DUH! read the ***** main page somteime idiots.
its option as the person above me said. - copper7op, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no digg, its old news, and its optional install
- Satertek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"- ADWARE INCLUDED - you can, however, UNCHECK that ADWARE at installation!"
He says outright that adware is included, and that its easy to avoid installing. He not trying to hide anything, just trying to support furthur development. Probably not the best way, but maybe it was the only way he could find. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nah, of course not, people don't see the connection between search toolbar and spyware, just as they don't see the connection between screensaver & spyware, or bonzi buddy & spyware for that matter. They're as clueless as ever.
- efiggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SpyFalcon? I'm sorry to hear that... I think that it's a version of SmitFraud. Do a Google search for SmitFraudFix.zip and run the tool to clean yourself up. Use Ad-Aware and Spybot in Safe Mode and be sure to disable System Restore and you should be fine!
- suicidal-kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a simple solution to all this. Either use something else, don't install the toolbar (current ver.), or just never update. As long as you can still mount, you will still be good.
- witooo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used Alcohol 120% until i was forced to look for an alternative cause it was unable to load a virtual image. Deamon Tools was that alternative and i found it to be an amazing choice.... why do they have to spoil it now? What a shame!
- retawd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11. I'm using DT4.00HE and didn't install spyware
2. There is a 64bit supported version of Alcohol. - akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would be using alcohol, but not 64 bit supported.
So no real other choice that I know of..... -
